Trying to download a movie to Nook Color

This is indirectly related to NC, so please forgive me if I'm not supposed to post this here!

I read on these boards that DVD Catalyst 4 would convert to Mpeg4 format so that I could view them on NC.

So, I put a DVD into the drive, Leap Year, and 8 files showed up.  File 1 failed to convert, and about 8  hours later, it's attempting to convert File 2. Six of the 8 files are about 1 hour 40 minutes, 1 is 54 min, 1 is 2 hours 12 minutes.

I have Windows 7.  Also, every time Catalyst loads for the first time, Windows automatically starts cyberline power dvd dx to try to view the movie.

I'm not very techno-savvy and  I really thought this was supposed to be easy!

Does anyone know what I can do?

Thanks!

Who told you it would be easy? After you figure it all out, however long that takes, then it will seem easy.

What you are saying is exactly why Macs have a better reputation for working with video. It isn't that you can't do all this on PCs. You can. It's just that the Apple folks have made the interface for doing common things a good bit more obvious and uniform.

Re: Trying to download a movie to Nook Color

You may be seeing different cuts of the movie: widescreen, fullscreen, dubbed, foreign language etc.

I'd suggest you try a different movie to start. Most that I've been copying have 1 or 2 large files to choose from. Satisfy yourself that you understand the process of getting it all the way to viewing on your NC or you may give up under frustration.

If you do end up with multiple files in that upper window of Catalyst, try picking each one in turn and right-clicking and chose remove (or delete, whatever it says) until you have just 1 to deal with at a time. In my experience it's the first file that you want, but not always, as you may have already found out. Also, once you have a file selected, you can hit Preview to get an idea of what you'll get (dubbed, language, format etc.)

Don't give up yet, the first one I did was a bit of a mystery, but once I had it in the bag the next ones are a piece of cake. Try writing the support line at Catalyst, they helped me out, and quickly too, like within a hour.

Re: Trying to download a movie to Nook Color

It also may be the case that the movie is encrypted.  Catalyst will not convert encrypted movies.  I think others have suggested DVDFab for that, but don't quote me.

Catalyst is generally just one button push conversion, but...

Movies do often contain extra content which sometimes is just another movie of inverviews, but sometimes is actually interactive content.  For instance, some kid's movies have actually got games within the extra content.  But you can choose to not convert any item giving you problems and see if the main movie got converted.  If it won't convert, it is likely it is encrypted.

Some info for others:

SD movies may end up cut off or stretched.  The NC uses an HD screen size (resolution) as the default for the NOOKcolor.  I'm not all tecchy about this stuff either, so the terms I use may be wrong.  It defaults to 1024 x 600.  I had a movie that I had to change to 640 x 480 because it had gotten stretched.  I did this by selecting the NOOKcolor and then hitting modify.  Also, you can select the global settings option and go through the tabs to Borders and select no cropping, so that it does not remove black borders if parts of you movies are getting cut off.

Re: Trying to download a movie to Nook Color

I think Catalyst does deal with breaking encryptions, but has trouble with "non-standard" protection systems. Some of these can be overcome, some not.

Thanks for clarifying that.  I knew I would get it at least partly wrong.:smileysurprised:

Re: Trying to download a movie to Nook Color

Thanks everyone!

I am still trying to download "The Proposal" but it is tricky, and I'm getting nowhere fast.  I believe it is protected by Arcos(?).  I tried some things suggested by Catalyst, but they didn't work.

I guess I'll contact them.

In the meantime, I did successfully get "Leap Year" on my NC!

I'm going to try an older movie now and one that is not Sony, and see what happens!

Ah! Success!  Sounds like The Proposal is protected like Up is, I had to turn that thru DVDFab first.

Re: Trying to download a movie to Nook Color

I tried putting an .MP4 movie into the NC just to see what it would be like... no matter how I converted it from AVI to MP4 it yelled at me.  Cannot play this movie.

I found if I took the .MP4 file, added it to my file library in itunes and after it was done 'loading' (few minutes for a 700MB file) then I was able to drag it from itunes and drop it on my desktop and when I copied it to the NC everything worked just fine.  YMMV   :smileyhappy:

Perhaps it had converted it to the ipod standard that is basically what the NC uses.  Whatever works is great in my book, er nook.

Re: Trying to download a movie to Nook Color

Just for completion of this thread, I picked up the proposal, and figured out the settings to make it work.

It took me about 2 days with attempting to convert "The Proposal", giving up, and switching to "Leap Year" to realize how great DVD Catalyst 4 really is!

I never figured out how to get The Proposal to convert.  It's protected and I'm not technically savvy.  I've read your tips specifically for this one, but nothing seems to work.

I do have a question about another movie -- The Lake House.  I followed the steps for Catalyst 4, but after a minute of converting, it ejects from the PC drive.  I tried several times.  What's wrong?

But, for the most part, if the movie is straightforward and not protected, Catalyst 4 works well in converting my movies to the NC.  I've already got 7 movies on the NC!!   And the quality is wonderful.

Thank you DVD Catalyst 4!:smileyvery-happy:

Hi Dec17,

I just picked up "The Proposal", and ran a few tests, and to make this movie to work, 2 checkmarks need to be enabled.

Start DVD Catalyst 4 without a DVD in the drive.

Enable "Power User" mode (bottom right)

Go into "Global Settings" (top left) and then select the "Boosterpack" tab on the right.

At the bottom are 2 settings for the "Previewfix", enable both.

This will switch to a different detection-method, which will work better for this DVD.

Now insert your DVD, and when the track selection box shows up, select track 38, and click OK.

After that, you can make changes to language/subtitle selection etc just like any other DVD, and start the conversion.

Re: Trying to download a movie to Nook Color

Catalyst prides themselves on their tech support why not give them a hit since it is their program.

Hi AuntieEm,

Barnes & Noble doesn't offer any movie service (yet) for the NOOK.

Other services, such as Amazon Digital Downloads, Apple iTunes rental/purchase movies and shows also are not compatible with the Nook.

If you want to watch movies on your NOOK color, you will either have to use Netflix Streaming Service, or convert your own DVDs to video files that will play on your NOOK.
