Re: USB Not Recognized - Windows 7

I would just like to add my comments to the chorus of voices for whom the Nook Color USB connection is failing. I have little new info to add. I'm using Windows Vista. The first time I tried to connect the Nook to the USB port it was recognized, though it would frequently disconnect itself and reconnect while I was attempting to transfer files.

Starting yesterday I got the infamous "USB Device Not Recognized" error.  It does not matter which USB port I use, front, back, monitor, hub. It does not matter how many times I power down the Nook and/or the computer.  Cursing doesn't seem to help either.

The Nook Color is generally a fine device, but I'm surprised this is an ongoing issue that can't be resolved. I see posts in various threads going back to the beginning of 2010 and nobody from Barnes & Noble has a fix or even a reliable workaround?

For now I'm resigned to simply using the MicroSD card for everything, but I do wish the tech people at BN would get on this problem. I've never had an issue with a USB device like this.

Yeah...it's a bad USB cable.

When I connect to with my cell phone's cable it connects just fine. I've been able establish a USB link by using my cell phone's cable.

Re: USB Not Recognized - Windows 7

I received my Nook Tablet today and had the same issues with my Windows 7 PC not recognizing it.  During the driver install in said that the OMAP4430 failed to install.  The light on the Nook was red not green.  However after rebooting the PC and the Nook and making sure to "wakeup" the Nook all is working great.  The light never did turn green but I was able to transfer borrowed library books just fine....happy now!

Re: USB Not Recognized - Windows 7

It's not a bad usb charging cord here. I've used 2 different official NC cords in both the front and back usb slots. This is a new machine and I never had a problem on the old one. I've also been upgraded to Win7. I couldn't remember at first if I had connected before on this machine, but I remember that I did once. It connected, disconnected, connected, disconnected. I'm not even sure that it ejected correctly since if flashed connected, disconnected twice while I was trying to remove the usb cord. That was about a week ago. I was able to get a file transferred before ejecting both drives and disconnecting.

Now I can't connect at all.Like I said, 2 different cords, 3 different usb slots on my computer. If there is a driver I need to dl, let me know what it is so I can go get it.

Otherwise..this is very upsetting...I have library books I need to get.

The NC has been acting perfectly okay otherwise. Got it in Jan and use it daily.

I really hope this is something that can be fixed.

Re: USB Not Recognized - Windows 7

okay..update.

I opened my computer and saw that my computer was flagged so I highlighted it and did a troubleshoot. It came up that my usb slots were the trouble and it asked if I wanted to fix it. Said yes and it came back that I needed to update the driver. Said yes to that and it came back that the driver was up to date already. Next, asked if I wanted it to look for a solution and I said yes again. It came back saying that the there was a conflict with my "away mode" setting and that I needed to correct it in my bios.

Told hubby the techgeek and he said to go into my control panel, hardware, select my power settings and under media settings. It was set to sleep mode, so I changed it to away mode. I did and then did a reboot.

I worried about that as I had googled what away mode was before I did this and it told me the same thing as what hubby told me, but it had said to switch it TO sleep mode. Hubby had told me to go ahead and try it, I could always switch it back.

Anyway, when it came back up, hooked my NC and it connected right away, no problems. YAY!!

Re: USB Not Recognized - Windows 7

I had it recognizing this morning when I downloaded the 1.4.1 to the Nook but this evening it no longer recognizes it after repeated attempts. The unit charges just fine but will not let itself be discovered correctly.  I have tried to run with a nook for as long as I can.  I think it is time to bit the bullet and step up to an Ipad...  This USB Not Recognized string goes way too far back not to have been addressed by the techy peeps.

Did you try replacing your USB cable? Even though it charges, that doesn't mean the cable is good. From what you're describing (some intermittency) it sounds like a bad cable perhaps. I've had my NC for a year, been through two firmware updates (now on 1.4.1) and never had problems with it being recognized by Windows XP, Vista, Windows 7, or Ubuntu Linux.

Try a different port on your computer, this works for me. Sometimes it likes one port better than another. When I am on the nook side it wants one port when I am on the N2A side I have to use a different port.

Re: USB Not Recognized - Windows 7

It's the cable. Get a new USB cable with a microUSB connector (that's the connector on your NC). The stock cable is failing (it seems they all do). A new cable from a computer supply store will set you back $2.

Do realize that an everyday PC cable will also work for charging ... BUT ... your charge time will be significantly extended (say, overnight).

Oh yes, before you try another port just run right out and buy another cable, it will not work well for charging, but whatever.  Not my money.

Well, I wouldn't say they *all* do. :smileywink: I've had my BN USB cable since I got my NC over a year ago and it's never failed. However, there have been indeed a number of posts on the boards here about failing chargers or cables (more often the charger).

Re: USB Not Recognized - Windows 7

Had a very similiar problem with on old iphone.. the SOLUTION... Power off computer and either unplug power supply or turn switch off (if there is one) on power supply.

After reboot, it would work just fine.

Crazy as it sounds a lot of people have had this work...

That brings up a good point, although this may not have a bearing on the current problem: when unplugging the NC from the PC you must do an "eject" from the PC side first or it can get quite confused.

Re: USB Not Recognized - Windows 7

One issue I have found is the Power Level of the Nook.  If the nook battery is low, it will drop in and out.  Once the nook has full charge, it will work no issues.

Re: USB Not Recognized - Windows 7

Just an FYI - I've always had my Win XP 'not recognize' the hardware when I first plug in the Nook. (a small window comes up which I cancel in the bottom right corner of WinXP)  It then gives a larger window asking if I want to go find the hardware.  I just cancel that window too and go get a cup of coffee (ie kill time) while the computer goes through even more hourglass twiddling.  Despite the errors that hardware was not found it is still syncing up with my Nook.

If I start this process with the nook turned off, eventually the Nook will go through all it's start up and need to be swiped to the home page (where you should see the USB window come up) and about that time I get a final window from WinXP asking if I want to open files, folders music etc. and I always cancel that too.

That let's me know it's finally finished so when I open Windows Explorer it will finally show the two drives: for the Nook and it's SD card.  Only then is it ready to drag files back and forth.  The whole process takes approx 2-4 minutes!  Just wanted to throw that out there in case someone is assuming that the first error messages from windows means it won't eventually sync up.

Re: USB Not Recognized - Windows 7

The "different port" fix worked for me... I had my wireless mouse plugged into one, and I had tried all the others. When I unplugged the mouse and plugged in the Nook, viola, it worked. Who knew... Anyway, thanks for the suggestion- this helped me out.
