I have been waiting since Jan 29th to receive a replacement power cord for my NC. Needless to say it is dead. I have been told 4 times from tech support that the cord will be shipped and I will receive it in 2 days... I just got off the phone with tech support and they have finally admitted that they are out of stock of the power cords, and they will not have any until 2/20/2011! I love my NC but I have not been happy about the power cord problem. This will be the 3rd replacement. I told them I was not happy, and they should have admitted in the first place that they did not have the power cords in stock! I guess I will have to go back to the B&N store to charge my NC so that I can read it. Not convenient since store is 30miles away. Sorry to vent for so long, but I am frustrated!

My uneducated guess is that you need a new device. If you are on your 3rd cord....it may be your nook that is causing the prob with the cord.
Yes...shame on them for not owning up to the fact that the cords were out of stock.

sassyreaderva, maybe the Barnes and Noble store that you have to travel 30 miles will have a power cord in stock. If not, I do hope that Barnes and Noble Customer Service will get their act together and speedily send you a replacement on February 20th.

You could charge the NOOKColor using a regular USB cable attached to your computer. It will take a LONG time to charge but it will charge as long as you do not use the NC. Not the best solution but in your situation probably worth the time.

I apologize you are having such a difficult time in securing a functional cord for your NOOKcolor. I do not believe the representative with whom you spoke was attempting to be deceitful, I believe there was a batch of bad cords and between those faulty cords and replacing others, stock quickly dwindled. I hope that our stock allows for a quick replacement as I can understand how frustrating it can be to have a NOOK and not be able to use it ASAP.
I do want to mention Barnes & Noble does not advise utilizing aftermarket products for charging. Because the NOOK eReaders are trickle charge devices, utilizing a non-B&N part can run the risk of overcharging and causing permanent damage to your battery.
Best wishes for happy reading and a speedy resolution.

Molly, will there be any damage if the Nook Color is left connected to a PC's USB port? Apparently this will recharge the Nook Color's battery if left connected long enough and the device isn't used during that time. Is the official stance that we shouldn't do this or are you simply referring to the use of aftermarket USB chargers?

Utilizing the USB cord that originally came with NOOKcolor to charge your device using your computer's USB port will cause no damage. I am referring to alternate USB cords/chargers. Utilizing the USB cord will charge your device. It may take a little longer as the ports on a USB drive are not as strong as a wall outlet but the NOOKcolor cord is designed to charge from both the wall and the USB connections.

- When left connected to a computer USB port, the computer doesn't know to switch to trickle charge towards the end of the NC charging.
- Is it ok for the NC battery longevity to let a computer USB port "top it off"?

Question concerning using the AC power cord with a car 115VAC/100W power outlet. Can I safely use the car outlet to charge the NC instead of purchasing (when available) the B&N car charger? Info would be appreciated, as I love my NC and I do not want to do anything to hurt it. Sorry if this has been asked before...Thanks ![]()

My advice will always be to utilize Barnes & Noble chargers for our device. I cannot begin to speculate what a car power conversion box could do in regards to potential for damaging your battery but I can say if you use our chargers, they will be compatible and you will not void your warranty in the event something happens.
In regards to USB charging: It seems when I use my laptop or a low-power source (such as a USB port), the NOOKcolor tells me that it is not charging however if I watch the battery life, it is. My thought is that the electrical current is flowing just not at that of an AC power source. Yes, it is safe to charge using the Barnes & Noble USB charger.

Sorry, I did not make my question clear enough. I want to know if I can use the wall AC power cord that came with the NC with the 115 VAC/100W power outlet that is in my car? The outlet looks like a regular AC wall outlet, it is not a round 12V/120W (12 VDC) outlet.
Thanks for further info...

Only if it acts like an inverter, which changes the 12V DC to 110-120V AC. Otherwise no.
However, you can get a car charger kit at B&N that has the cigarette lighter adaptor and an additional cable. Matter of fact, it has two cables, one for a Nook Classic and one for a Nook Color.

It sounds like an inverter would be a better deal, in general, than car charging adapters especially if you have more than one device to charge. Instead of separate adapters for Nooks, phones, mp3 players, etc. yoiu can plug anything that uses wall current into an inverter (assuming it has a wall charger for it in the first place).

Check your cars manual, but the 115 VAC outlets in cars/trucks can generally be used like any wall outlet in your house. They have an inverter installed from the factory so you should not need to purchase any additional equipment.

Thanks to all of you for your replys. Got the answer I was hoping for, that I should be able to use the car outlet without having to invest more $$$ to get another charger cord for the NC. I also asked the NC expert at our local B&N store and he said it should be OK too. So, I'm going to give it a try. I'll post back if it gets fried.

Like many of this community, I started having trouble downloading books from my PC and decided the problem was the cord. So I took the cord and charger into my local B&N store. The Nook staff person was eating lunch, but left the table when he saw me. After I explained the problem he just handed me the cord of the display unit, said he only needed it for charging (!), and I'm back in great shape again! Super service, no cost, no question. Thanks!![]()

Now, I don't know...maybe I'm being naive about this and maybe this question has already been asked, but isn't a generic USB wall charger (but still utilizing the nookColor cord) just the same as using the USB wall charger proved by BN? They are essentially the same thing, right? Or am I just completly wrong about this one? I honestly would like to know if there is a difference.
