I got my nook color for Christmas and it has yet to update. I had access to wifi at my mom's house but it never updated even when I left it alone.
I have been home for a week and it still has not been updated. But for some reason as soon I connected to my home connection for the first time I had a bunch of magazines and apps I did not download on my nook but no software update.
When they say leave it idle they just mean let it sit there and not actually touch the power button right?
Is there some setting I need to adjust? This seems like the most complicated automatic update ever.

You could try downloading it directly and speeding things along. After I followed those instructions and let my unpowered unit go to sleep, it updated almost immediately.
If that procedure doesn't work, I'd start troubleshooting. Either you're doing something wrong, or something else is blocking the update. Have you rooted in the past? Is Clockworkmod loaded on eMMC?

If you live near a B&N store, you can take your Nook there and have them sideload the update for you. If that is not feasible, download the update again, place the zip file in your main Nook directory and allow the device to go to sleep on it's own. It should update itself.

For those of you waiting for the over-the-air update, have you been keeping the NC plugged in to a power source when it's asleep? When the 1.1 and 1.2 updates were released, I waited, and waited, and waited for 3 weeks, but no update came. So I manually sideloaded the updates. Then, before the 1.3 update came out, I discovered that the wifi on the NC would turn off 15 minutes after the NC went to sleep, but would stay on if the NC was plugged in. So when the 1.3 update came alomg, I left the NC plugged in when it was asleep, and within 2 days I got the OTA update. It may just have been a coincidence, but it may be worth a try.

I have left it plugged in and unplugged. I never really turn thing off.
I guess I am going to have to sideload. Seems a little ridiculous to me.
It's a good reader but I'm staring to wish I had gotten the Kindle Fire instead.

I don't think B&N has released the update for Wi-Fi yet. At least I know of no one who had received the update. Methinks that the current new release was deemed too buggy after the early adopters side-loaded 1.4.1... I suspect there will be a 1.4.2 before the Wi-Fi update releases. Of course this is personal conjecture.... ICBW.

I have been waiting and waiting since the message posted in December regarding the update rollout. As of this morning it still had not automatically downloaded despite several days of leaving the wifi on, etc. I even went to my local store and sat in the cafe drinking coffee and reading and nothing happened. This worked perfectly for the last update. So I decided to do it manually. It did not work the first two times, but then I read on one of the threads that someone had to do it three times. I figured maybe lucky number three would work and it did. No one could tell me why the update didn't happen automatically, which is a little frustrating. The manual download wasn't difficult, just frustrating in that it took three attempts.

JediPrincess, you could have had the Nook expert in then store do the update for you. I did this last year when I wasn't so sure about how to do it. Something to think about next time.

It finally did it on its own about two weeks ago. I had not touched it for over a week.
btw, it was not plugged it, so that does not matter it seems.

I am still waiting for the auto update and tried to manually download. That did not work either. Followed the instructions, 5 times, and still not updated. Frustrating all around. I wonder if you completely wipe out your register and then re-register, will it update automatically to 1.4.1. There's a thought!
