Back cover wont come off and is covering the charger plug

My Nook froze up on me earlier today and took it into B & N on campus. The employee there searched the computer for instructions on how to fix the problem and found that we needed to disconnect the battery. He and and another employee both worked at getting the back cover off and eventually gave up. I'm afraid if I pull any harder I'll just break it.

Since we couldn't get the cover off - we were able to pop the tab on the bottom open a bit - the tab that you grip on the back cover is blocking access to the charger plug. Because I can't plug the thing in, I can't try to recharge a possibly dead battery or attempt any of the other countless methods for rebooting that I have found.

I don't blame the store attendants, it's an issue with the Nook support manual and the Nook Simple Touch cover design.

So how should I proceed from here? Should I try to force the back cover off? Is there a replacement program at all?

I've only had the Nook for a month and I was really enjoying using it. Thanks for any help!

I think the problem you have is whatever they found in the way of instructions was for a different model of the Nook, the original, which did have a removable back and a replaceable battery.  The Nook simple Touch is not designed to have the back cover removed and the battery is not user replaceable and probably cannot be disconnected.  In fact, the NST owners manual states that opening the back cover of your Nook voids the warranty.  It's not an issue of the owners manual the NST back cover, since it wasn't designed to remove it and it clearly states in the manual that doing so will void the warranty.

If you can't press the tab back in, you need to go back to the college bookstore and get the manager involved.  Does the college bookstore even sell Nooks?  While they were trying to be helpful, if they haven't been trained in using the Nook, they should have told you so.  They could have tried calling CS to see if they had any ideas.  If they had gone to the NST manual on the BN website and searched back cover, they'd have seen that opening the back cover voids the warranty.  I don't know where they got the information about disconnecting the battery, but that is a fix for the original Nook, not the NST.

The college bookstore needs to do whatever it takes to make this right for you.

Re: Back cover wont come off and is covering the charger plug

The above reply is the correct solution, go back to the store and have them fix it. But just some background on the cover design. The simple touch has pretty much the same back cover design as the original nook though the original nook has a tiny tab to help initially lift the cover from the nook body. When I first took the back cover off my original nook it was almost impossible and I thought for sure I was going to break the cover, exactly as you descibe with your simple touch. Putting it back on required a lot more force than I would have thought as well. Once you know what it takes it is pretty easy to remove. Given the similar design I'd think the simple touch back cover would be the same. Not that I'd recommend its removal as apparently there is no longer any purpose for this (maybe as a result of so many original nook owners not being able to take off the back cover). But if anyone gets in a similar situation as the OP, you could try just pressing harder to snap the cover back in place. The cover can probably take it.
