Battery question/issues?

I upgraded my original Nook for the NST when B&N ran their trade-in program around Christmas time and I LOVE my new Nook. LOVE, love it. However, I'm noticing that the battery life is not anywhere near what it should be. I don't read every day on it, so when I'm not reading it I've been putting it into standby mode. I never have Wifi turned on unless I'm downloading a book, so I know that's not running in the background and draining juice. I did a little test a few days ago and charged it to 100% and then left it on standby for a half-day. When I checked it, it had already gone down to 84%. No reading, no Wifi activity. Is this normal or should I contact B&N about it?

I've since started turning it completely off when I'm not going to be reading for the rest of the day or the next day. I'd just read when I first got it that B&N recommended using standby instead of powering on/off, so that's why I'd been doing it that way.

It's really the only issue I have at all. But if this is a bad one, I'd rather get it taken care of now than wait until the warranty is up. Thanks for any help/advice! :smileyhappy:

Re: Battery question/issues?

With wifi off, I'm seeing closer to 1% every 6 hours (4% per 24 hours). Your battery consumptions sounds high. Since it's brand spanking new, I'd go have it checked out, or call tech support.

Re: Battery question/issues?

Rainfall00,

There have been a few times when my NST battery seemed to be draining too rapidly.  Even though the NST was totally responsive, I tried the following procedure that's in the user manual (no snickering, please. I read ALL user manuals cover to cover):

If for some reason your NOOK becomes unresponsive, you can perform a soft reset to restart the device.

1. Press and hold the power button for 20 seconds, then release the power button.

2. Press the power button again for 2 seconds to turn on your NOOK.

Did this on two consecutive days and the battery "magically" cured itself.  The purpose of the soft reset has nothing to do with battery life, so this could have been sheer coincidence. However, the soft reset is a quick and painless procedure that is worth a try.

Bought my NST in November and get about a month per charge, reading about an hour every day.

Good luck,

Marty

Re: Battery question/issues?

Marty, I'm thinking that if it clears from the soft reset, it's not a battery issue, but a meter issue.

Rainfall, if the soft reset doesn't work and the battery drain continues, you may want to try de-registering and re-registering it (make sure everything is backed up before hand).  If that still doesn't help, I'd contact B&N about a replacement, as that battery drain doesn't seem typical.

I recharge mine about every 4-6 weeks, when it reaches about 30%, and I read about 12-15 hours/week.

Yes, it probably is the meter.  Fortunately, it occurs very infrequently, so it's a minor issue.  Marty

Re: Battery question/issues?

Ok, thanks for the tip on the soft reset - I'll give it a shot. I definitely don't get anywhere near a month though, even reading as sporadically as I do on the Nook. I also read paperbacks and have a few books going at once, so I don't read on the Nook every day. But I'll try out that reset and the re-registering if that doesn't work. Hopefully between the two my mysterious battery suckage will cease. :smileyhappy:

Re: Battery question/issues?

Mine seemed to start having battery issues when the 1.1.2 update was applied.  Anyone know how to roll back?

"No snickering...." on the contrary, it's nice to see someone else who reads the manuals "cover to cover." :smileyhappy:

I always read the manual fully and carefully before I ever use the product.  I have been snickered at for doing it many times, but I have found that it's best to have some idea of what features/functions do and how to use them before attempting to do so.

Now I know there are at least TWO of us! :smileywink:

I've finally "mastered" my Nook and no longer need to refer to the manual.  However, it's nice to know that the "Nook User Guide" is on my Nook ... just in case.

Recently bought an iPhone.  Maybe 10% of its functionality was "intuitive" to me.  I would have missed out on many features without reading the manual.  One of the first iBooks I downloaded to the phone was the users manual.

I don't see breaking my "cover to cover" habit in today's hightech world! :smileyhappy:

I don't blame you, it's a good habit to have, especially as you pointed, out in this hightech world.

Now, if the folks who write the manuals would only get a little better at being precise! :smileywink:
