I am in some desperate need of help. Ever since the 1.1.0 update I have been unable to connect to the wi-fi in my home. I called cust ser and they walked me through the normal steps...reset my router, factory reset my nook, forget the network, and of course turn it on and off. None of which have solved my issue. They then suggest I call my service provider because it could be my firewall on my router blocking my nook. They couldn't help of course because my internet was fine since all my other devices in my home can connect. I can of course connect in other places i.e.. B&N Store, Starbucks, and work. If I go in the store for help I look crazy cause it works there but not at home. When I first got the nook less than a month ago I was fine, and then the dreadful update screwed me. I am an avid B&N customer and love my nook and would hate to be pushed into the arms of Amazon Kindle
PLEASE SOMEONE HELP OR AT LEAST JOIN ME IN THE BATTLE I CAN'T BE THE ONLY ONE WITH THIS ISSUE.
Thanks!!!!!!!!!!

Do you have Verizon Fios and an Actontec Router If so this is a known problem. Do a search on these boards and you will find work arounds by assigning a IP address instead of using DHCP with your NST. Sounds Greek to you? Just follow the instructions. Also know that B&N apparently knows abnout this and is working on a fix.

I have just installed the new update to my Simple Touch Limited Edition and I am not able to connect to my home wi-fi router. Odd thing is, before the update, I was able to connect and now, the ST fails to obtain an IP address. I have reset botht the ST and the router on multiple attempts. Any ideas?
Router is Netgear WPN824v2 with latest firmware update.

I do have verizon fios and I will try and search the boards to see what I can find. Or maybe BN will fix the issue. Thanks for your help.

I am having the same trouble! I did an online chat session with a B&N tech support today and all they could tell me was to Erase/Unregister my device...but that requires a network connection to complete! They said they are aware of the connectivity issue and are working to resolve it, but no idea how long it will be like this. Very frustrating! I noticed they have significantly dropped the price on these things recently. What a disappointment to get something as a Christmas gift that won't work correctly! I hope they resolve it soon.

See this post. Step by step instructions to get connected to your Wifi again.
It has worked for all but one person who has reported trying it for this issue.

I think it hasn't worked for more than one person, but I do think everybody should try the above-linked solution. It'll be a little different for each model router, of course - this was written specifically for ActionTec/Verizon - but the procedure should be the same in essentials.
But I wish they would fix this soon; while out of town last week I encountered the same problem with the free hotel WiFi and was powerless to fix it (did not know router's MAC Address to use the Nook-based 'Wifi Static' solution I described near the end of that thread Ya_Ya just linked to).
If you're rooted, you might wanna try the following:
If you use that solution and you need to find out the MAC Address of your router (say in a hotel), run arp -a in Windows or /usr/sbin/arp -a in OSX or *nix.

I purchased a Nook Simple Touch last friday when B&N had their "limited edition" special. I already own the 1st Gen. Nook (appx 20 months old) and love it and wanted to get a second, smaller Nook to slip in my purse. I just opened it yesterday and spent a good part of the day trying to get it to connect to my home wifi. It shows my wifi among the selections, but when I tap it to select, it won't connect. I pulled out my 1st Gen. Nook and turned on the wifi and it connected without a hitch.
I read through this support group and the helpful links that everyone posted, but I'm just not tech savvy and don't really want to go through the trouble of pinging and restarting router and other things that I have no understanding of. My husband set up the wifi and I think it's a Linxsys router. None of our other electronics (ipod, laptop, Nook 1st Gen.) have trouble connecting to the wifi.
I'm going to return the NST today and just stick with my original Nook.

...I know it sounds daunting, but it's bark is louder than its bite, and being able to use a superior machine like the NST is well worth the trouble. Of course, the problem is, is that you've got to worry about when you'll come across a stray WiFi router that you do not have access to and thus cannot configure, unless you decide to root your nook (which actually would be relatively difficult for non-tech-savvy folk).

Guys, I finally think I found what it is changed between the two versions that is causing this trouble - libnetutils.so. I have been using WiFi for a day without any issue and want to know if this helps anybody else.
See here for how to apply it:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=198
Again, this is only possible if you're rooted your Nook. The process of rooting really is not that difficult and I can post a small manual guide to that effect, just so that pepole can test this. (All rooting does is allow you to have greater access to your system. You don't need to install any apps or anything that would actually change the user experience on the nook.)
See here for an example of the libnetutils source code:

that is because there is a glitch with that software version so you need to wait for the next update BN is already aware of that so the update will be coming really soon

After spending 2 hours on the phone in 2 one hour sessions with the Nook help desk and 1 hour on the phone with Verizon. It was recommended I return my nook to factory settings. This I could not get it to do so I took it to the B&N store. The sales person there was also unable to get it to work so call the help desist was decided my nook had a malfunction so they returned it and gave me a new one ( within 14 days of buying)The new nook has system 1.0.1 on it not 1.1.0 so the upgrade really messed everything up. I had to do nothing to my home Wi-fi - it connected right away with me doing nothing. I automatically turned the Wi-fi off so it does not automatically update again. I just hope it does not when I turn it on to buy something. My sister who lives in NH has the exact same issues - she bought hers the same time. She has Comcast, so different router etc. Please fix this update for the Nook SimpleTouch so this goes away! I am now convinced to stay with Nook now that mine is working but I really looked a the Kindles online before I went to the B&N store. Even though everyone I interacted ith was extremely nice and patient it was not worth the trouble! I am sure this is the cause of everyones problems connecting to secure networks.

It takes a while to download an update, so if you just buy a book or two at a time, let the wifi connect just long enough to get your books, then disable wifi. At least until they release the next update. Keep an eye on the link at Nook Simple Touch > Support > Software UPdates. You'll have to do the "sideload" technique to get wifi fixed.

I got my nook simple touch (V 1.1.0) to wifi connect to my router in 3 minutes.
My router is a Buffalo WHR-54G with DD-WRT firmware v24-sp2 (12/18/10) std - build 15940
It's a simple task and not difficult if you have the following:
a router that has static IP address lease capability
admin privileges to the router (need to know the router's LAN IP address, user name and password)
a basic understanding of IP assignments
The solution is to allow the router to assign a static IP address-based on the nook's MAC address.
The suspected 1.1.0 problem is that the nook cannot connect to the router's DHCP (dynamic) next available IP address.
The steps are the following:
- Identify nook's mac address (Settings->About your nook ->wifi MAC address) write it down
- Admin into the router
- Identify the DHCP Server's start IP address (ie 192.168.1.100)
- Identify the maximum number of users (ie 50). There are 50 devices or clients.
- This means that 50 devices (WIFI or wired) maybe connected to the router and given an IP address anywhere from 192.168.1.100 to 192.168.1.149. The router dynamically determines the IP address
- Identify a nook IP address candidate that is outside of the range (ie 192.168.1.99)
Do Not select an IP addr in the range. This will create another set of problems.
- Go to router's section that allows for static client leases
- Enter 192.168.1.99, the MAC address, the name of the device, and the number of lease minutes (ie 1440)
- Save the changes.
- Your done. Enjoy!
By the way, you can connect to other wifi routers by admin in and doing another static lease..
There is another bigger problem. Without a proper working WIFI, BN cannot do a simple over-the-air firmware update. They probably would require endusers to do an USB firmware download (ie *.zip file) to the root level of the nook and do a reboot.
I am not sure how non-tech savy endusers feel about this.

This is the exact solution I came across and posted here a few weeks ago and I encourage everybody to try it. It is not a foolproof fix. If you do not have access to the router you are having issues with, then you're screwed...unless you're rooted, in which case you can do one of two things:
(a) get /system/lib/libnetutils.so from version 1.0.0, push it over, fix permissions and reboot. It took me a while to figure this out, because I don't know nook internals, but that's the library that controls dhcpcd.
(b) eschew dhcp altogether and use static ips, which you can configure if you install an app like WiFi Static AND know the IP Address of the router you're trying to connect to.
Actually, going by route (a) I've noticed that sometimes wifi fails to reconnect after 'sleeping' (shutting itself off when it isn't being used) - status will read as 'disconnected'. In the logs, it's unclear whether this is a dhcp issue or wpa_supplicant issue. The part of the wifi stack that is in framework.jar has changed but testing with it makes it seem like it isn't a factor.
In fact, I'm not actually sure what the 'normal' behavior of the Nook Simple Touch is with DHCP, simply because my entire experience with it until a few days ago, when I finally isolated issue, has been with static ip leases from my router or without using DHCP altogether. So if anybody can chime in on what, exactly, should be considered normal behavior, that would be great!
In the meantime, I definitely advocate dropping in the libnetutils.so file to see if that gets a connection going without any router configuration necessary. Here's the link to my thread on the matter at xda:

One more thing- with the Verizon ActionTec router, anyway, assigning a client a static IP outside the range of IPs designated for dhcp will not work. It's a quirky router, so maybe the setting that typically specifies 'IPs to be assigned dynamically by dhcp' means 'IPs to be assigned by dhcp, dynamically or user-specified static leases included'

That is a quirky router.
This maybe not the forum for it, but a tech savy user may want to consider buying on e-bay - linksys routers WRT54G etc, converting it to wifi only access point. They that would attach this to the back of their router. After you install, the dd-wrt firmware it would give wifi access point only and static IP address lease capabilities.
The firmware: http://www.dd-wrt.com/site/index.
It is involved, but you can pick-up a G speed router for $15-20. The default linksys router firmware has the wifi access point only device turned -off. You need to install the 3rd part firmware, By default, a linksys router is a router and not a stand-alone wifi access point.
