Issues with Additional Information Showing up in "My Files"

For every side-loaded book through Adobe Digital Editions onto my nook, there seems to be at least one (but usually 2) additional files that show up in my files and it's extremely frustrating and sloppy looking. And the extra files aren't able to be opened.

Example:

If I check out a book from the library

My nook will have

Book_Title

Book_Title.pdf.png

Book_Title.pdf.annot

OR

Book_Title_0002

Book_Title.epub.png

I never had this problem with the original nook.

And it's only with books that have to go through ADE. If it is able to go through calibre (no DRM), then the title shows up normally (no underscores or extra numbers tacked on) and it does not have extra files floating around.

I know it's not a "real" issue, but I hate how sloppy it is and that the nook simple touch doesn't hide the extra files, like the original nook did.

The .png file is the book cover.

The pgn file is supposed to be an unencrypted thumbnail of the books cover page. I don't think the NST uses that file for epubs.

The annot file should be a data file for bookmarks and notes which you cannot make on books with B&N DRM using ADE.

Each of those files were present on the original nook when sideloading using ADE. I quit using ADE on my original nook and never used it on my NST because ADE does not clean up (remove) those files when you remove the book using ADE.

You can use Calibre to organize and sideload books that have DRM.  What you cannot do is convert them to another format or read them using Calibre (neither of which you can do with ADE).

Calibre reads and manipulates the opf file (metadata) in an EPUB for organization which according to the EPUB standard is unencrypted. The opf file contains information about the ebook such as the title. author, description, tags, isbn, rating, etc.

All nooks only read the author and title fields from a sideloaded ebook's opf file.

Re: Issues with Additional Information Showing up in "My Files"

@Larry

I had an idea of what they are, I want to know how to remove them from showing up when I'm trying to look for books - not every single file that is on my nook. My old nook (was the original 3G one that they charged an arm and a leg for) never showed up the other files in the "My Documents" area. Just the book files.

@gstone

So you're saying, if I download a book from the library (which will have ADE's DRM), even though calibre will tell me "This book is locked by DRM. To learn more about DRM and why you cannot read or convert this book using calibre, click here." I will be able to use it to transfer the files onto my nook - which will be able to read them?

I just want to be able to clean up the way my screen is when I look for books.

Unlike the N1E the NST treats B&N books and sideloaded books the same. There is no need to use "My files". The library books should show up in the regular library view.

@geertm:

Ah! Okay, thanks! :smileyhappy: That would explain the sloppiness of it then.

You only see that message in Calibre if you try to read the book in Calibre or try to convert the file to another format. Otherwise books with or without DRM are treated the same.
