My nook simple touch is stuck trying to unlock...HELP!

I've had my Nook for less than a month. I put books on my memory card, not the device itself. Tonight, when I went to read a book, my nook wouldn't unlock. The little arrows highlight left to right, as if its trying to unlock, but then it never does.

I tried pressing the power button, just to put in sleep mode, and then unlock again. Same thing. Then my nook started saying that it was just powering up. Again, just keeps sitting on the lock screen, waiting for me to slide to unlock. It then waits a minute, brings up a new "sleep" screen, and does the same thing over.

I read in another section that someone's battery was low when this happens. I just charged my nook about 3 days ago to a full charge. When I plugged in to test the theory mentioned above, and my nook says only 19% charged.

Is this something I should be overly concerned about? Does anyone know of a fix for it? I purchased at my local Target and I am just really worried about nook, since its so new.

Thanks so much!

Re: My nook simple touch is stuck trying to unlock...HELP!

You've made your inquiry in a forum frequented by Nook First Edition users. The First Edition is the larger discontinued model that's operated with an LCD screen below the e-Ink reading screen. Many of the people reading this forum have little or no experience with the Simple Touch model.

You might atract the attention of more people who are able to offer suggestions by inquiring in the Simple Touch forums on this site. Try clicking the "Browse Book Clubs" link above for links to B&N's numerous forums.

You're in the right forum (did someone move the thread?).  This is for the new Simple Touch.

However, something sounds wrong.  You should be able to go 4 to 6 WEEKS on a charge.

Plug it in, does the Nook say it's charging?  Give it a couple minutes and try and start it up.  You should be able to go to Settings -> Device Info and see "Charging"

If you haven't already, turn off your wi-fi unless you're actively using it.  That option can SUCK power.  And, it's even worse if there's no wi-fi in range because it's constantly searching.

Check for dust or dirt around the edges of the touchscreen. I've read that this can cause this type of behavior.

This Worked!!

I could not swipe to unlock the Nook. I tried numerous restarts and different combinations of pressing buttons.....

Then I read this post and I then armed myself with a toothpick. I scraped away accumulations. And then, I swiped to the right and lo and behold..........

I'm reading again and happy

The simple touch uses infared sensors which can become obstructed by debris. Tablets and newer phones use capacitive touch screens and are not affected in this manner.

I find that a good blow suffices. No need to stick things in there! Give it a good blast around the edges, and it should recover if this is the problem. In my experience, it has been.
