Nook is freezing

My nook is constantly freezing. It works when it's plugged in, though. What should I do?

Re: Nook is freezing

Gonna need to be a little more specific than "freezing."

No power from the battery should cause it to completely shut down, under normal circumstances.

Or is it getting stuck on a the screensaver and won't wake up?

Or is it actually freezing in the midst of normal operations?

This happened to me with my NST a few months ago. I hadn't used it for a while and then when I went to use it my screen was frozen on my screen saver. I plugged it in and let it charge and it was working fine, until I unplugged it from the charger. I tried unregistering the device and re-registering it and it still didn't fix the problem. It would work fine when plugged into the charger but would freeze everytime it was unplugged. Since I'm not very tech savy I ended up having to take the NST back to Best Buy where it was attempted to be "serviced." I was told that they could not fix it and the gave me a new unit through my replacement protection plan.

If you are still under warranty you might want to contact B&N for a replacement, unless someone else explains how this would be fixed.

I would love to know if it could be for future reference.

Re: Nook is freezing

The Nook ST and STG will "appear" to freeze when it has no power.  The screen stops and can't change.  e-Ink never goes "blank" like your computer does when it has no power.

It sounds like you have a bad battery that isn't holding a charge.  That's assuming you are plugging it in, seeing the light turn amber and then green.  Some people have had bad power-chords or plugged them into their computer in an unpowered USB port (like in an expander box).

Re: Nook is freezing

I am on my second ST and BOTH have had freezing problems.  The first one lasted 5 months before freezing constantly and the replacement from B&N has lasted 4 months before constantly freezing.  I took the second one back to the store and they advised me to remove the screen protector which we did.  It didn't help.  I've just sat here and gone through about six books.  I'm suspecting the Nook only freezes on free library books which I read a lot.  Good old B&N just wants you to buy, buy, buy.

It's not a conspiracy.  You nook would probably have issue with any book, or any sideloaded book.  It's not smart enough to know which ones are free.  Either there's an issue with your second nook and you're just horribly unlucky, or there's something going on that's happening on your end.

Re: Nook is freezing

I just tried something that I found on a different page...I pressed the power button and the Nook home button at the same time until it poewered off. Then pressed both again until it came on. I got a grey screen with Read forever, it started up and soon I had my screen looking normal, I tried it out and it seems to be working fine. I did, however, before I started this, make sure that I had fulyly charged the Nook. Hope this helps someone else.
