$99 eReaders

Interesting article from Farhad Manjoo about the next big price cut:

Re: $99 eReaders

I don't care how low the price goes. If I can't add extra memory, change the battery myself, and have multiple book formats available, then I'm just not interested.

I totally agree.

ETA: it looks like with the chips being cheaper though that all e-readers should go down in price so that's good news I guess!

Re: $99 eReaders

Well checking out Copia site you can and more.

eReaders powered by the Copia platform come with up to 4 GB internal storage — enough space for about 3,000 books. Choose a model with a Micro SD card slot and add up to 16 GB of additional shelf space.

Which do you prefer, capacitive softouch or soft keypad? Either way, Copia has you covered. Both QWERTY keyboard options let you navigate, take notes, highlight and, of course, read with ease.

You don't have to connect to your computer to be connected to your library, dashboard and marketplace. Choose a WiFi-enabled eReader and connect to any hotspot. And with 3G models in development, you'll be able to log in from just about anywhere in the U.S.

No matter how or where you purchase a book, with Copia, your eReader, desktop library and online account sync automatically. The same goes for your notes, highlights, bookmarks, comments and conversation.

Covering the whole gamut of specs for an e-reader

Now not promoting them so much pointing out there are readers out their or coming soon as good as the nook? We will see I guess.

Re: $99 eReaders

Does anyone else find it annoying that these articles only talk about the Kindle and the iPad like they are the ONLY ereaders available?  I read product reviews about ereaders that only talk about these two, never talk about the Nook.  Sometimes they talk about the Sony reader.  Even the Consumer Reports review was lame, not even mentioning the features that makes the Nook stand out over the Kindle and iPad.  I don't get it.

Well Kindle and apple are always considered easy meat news stories.

as Kindle has been around a lot longer and iPad being apple always the hype.

It is up to B&N to find ways to become known. By contacting and supplying nooks for reviews and such. Including more Ads in periodicals, magazines and TV ads. Which in my opinion haven't done a great job at marketing it to the masses.

In just about any group of people can find many that don't know what a nook is but know what a kindle is.

Re: $99 eReaders

We are living in interesting times.  A $99.00 e-reader is great.  But there is already a company in India that wants to supply their schools with a tablet computer for $35.00.  Check out just one of the articles http://news.cnet.com/8301-17938_105-20011536-1.html  .  While it isn't an e-reader only, it does show the possibilities for this market, and where it will lead.

Aside from the monetary aspects of this discussion, I hope that B&N pump up the volume on nook this holiday season.  If that happens the consumer dollar will vote on the better e-reader.

B&N seems to have missed the fact that Marketing sells both good and bad products.

  • Apple has great products (or at least all the flaws are far, far outweighed by a few superb features) and actually doesn't need much Marketing effort.
  • Amazon has a good product but covers its flaws with heavy marketing.
  • nook unfortunately, has not-so-good software, (but great hardware), and lacks widespread marketing (budget limitations?).  It therefore is largely invisible in the consumer mass-market.

Re: $99 eReaders

The reason most articles only cite the Kindle is the same reason people tend to call facial tissues from any brand "Kleenex" (which is only a brand of tissue) or refer to all transparent light adhesive tape as "Scotch Tape" (with is a trademark of 3M). Large market share owners always get this kind of treatment in the popular lexicon.

Some people's minds are like cement; all mixed up and permanently set.
