According to B&N CEO in Fox interview, BN will be launching games on the nook shortly.

According to an interview with the B&N CEO on Fox, they will be launching "games on the nook shortly"

nook vs iPad interview
Funny how the interviewer who claims to have a iPad, nook and kindle doesn't seem to have a clue.

Neither one seemed to have a clue, the CEO should have been jumping in about the benefits of the eink screen, etc.

I loved the "we have added lots of functionality to the nook since it launched" line.  :smileysurprised:

Let's worry about games AFTER this thing has all the "functionality" of it's competitors in the eReader arena!

By Games, I hope he means Choose Your Own Adventure books are making a comeback.

Games?  Who cares about games, I thought my nook to read books!   Don't get me wrong, I love my nook, but I do agree with FrogAlum that they need to work on other issues before trying to jazz it up with games.   I'm looking forward to the next hardware update to see what progress has been made.

I'd be really incensed if they spent 5 minutes making games work and even ONE nook freezes after the next update.

Seriously, GAMES?

We can't sort, organize, or show covers for our side loads, we can't keep our audiobooks out of our music, the music player is so lame that a $10 mp3 player is a better deal, some books refuse to open, others refuse to download, nooks freeze on a sneeze, notes slow nook to a crawl.

But they have time for Games?

Makes you want to grab someone by the wattles and slap them till they spit!

This has got to be the most truly rediculous thing I ever heard of being added. Not once in all these threads has anyone every mentioned "Gee wouldn't it be nice if I could play games on the nook?" Good Lord! What are they thinking? This can be a fantastic reading device, but a gaming device??? Oh get real, It has 4 buttons that are prone to cracking and a touch screen which ... lets say to be kind is kinda lacking in responsiveness. And oh lets not forget the battery life. So now they propose another item to drain the battery? Like what kind of games can they possibly develop for the nook?  Chess? Checkers?? since both of those are pretty much monochrome. They better get thier poo together, or they will start having nook owners going on Kindle boards and saying how they got swindled into buying a product thats a fraud. It's not an ereader, why it's the new - improved ebook GAMING machine, it now sucks at BOTH features.

This is a very appropriate link:

The interview was on FOX NEWS and you expect the interviewer to be knowledgeable about what he's talking about?

Ummmm....

Sorry - can't stop laughing .

I just have this image of icebike grabbing, "someone by the wattles" and shaking them back and forth :smileyhappy:

Re: According to B&N CEO in Fox interview, BN will be launching games on the nook shortly.

Ok, I read the comments on this and other threads about B&N turning nook into a game machine. I then went back and re-watched the video.

He never said they were concentrating exclusively on games.

In response to the fact that the interviewer (who seems to be an Apple fanboy) kept harping on how much more the iPad does he mentioned that there would be games on the nook as well.

I've seen mention in this thread that no one asked for games. If you browse back among the older posts requesting features for the nook you will find many requests for apps, web browser, RSS feeds, and GAMES.

If you consider the responsiveness of the e-ink screen you'll realize about the only games that would be suitable for the display are soduku and crossword puzzles. A good soduku game would have taken all of about 8 programmer hours to create (and they probably bought one and just ported it).

This was a very poor interview and before I complain that I'm being abandoned by B&N to produce a game machine, I'll wait for the next update and see what core features they fixed.

I would expect the PDF problem in MyDocuments to be fixed as far as bug repairs.

For new features I would be disappointed if soduku made it in before a go to page function.

Re: According to B&N CEO in Fox interview, BN will be launching games on the nook shortly.

I continue to be baffled how people keep comparing iPad to dedicated eBook readers..  First they say, iPad is does all this great stuff, not just eBooks.. Then they claim it's the better eBook reader..  My laptop does a lot of great stuff too, and guess what, I can also use it to read eBooks.. Tablet PC's have been around for a LONG time, and they too can read eBooks.

So my wish for today is this.. If you're going to compare a multifunction device to something, how about you compare it to another multifunction device, perhaps another tablet PC?? Imagine that!! Let's stop comparing multifunction devices to singe function devices.. This is getting ridiculous.

Ok, my rant is over. :-)

New software next week, new nook models later in 2010?

[ Edited ]

According to a 'tipster' on Engadget, nook 1.4 software will arrive next week and include a web browser. No word on games or other apps. There are also plans for a nook 2 and a nook lite:

nook news

Not sure if the v1.4 was a typo on the 'tipster's fault or engadget, or makes the whole 'tip' bogus

the only update to the nook 2 better be international capability or something. No way after 4 months should they be planning on releasing a new one, when the first one still has bugs.

i got another 20 something days, if more info gets released and it tells a release date for the nook 2 i will just take my nook back...no way im paying 260 bucks just for my nook to be second best a few months later.

First off, no one is talking about a nook 2.  That is merely Engadget speculation.

We are merely talking about a point release, from 1.2 to 1.X

International capability has never been a priority.  The device is sold in USA/Canada only, and anyone taking it anywhere else is on their own.  B&N doesn't do business anywhere else.  They have 775 retail outlets plus 636 college campus book stores in US/Canada.

The nook hasn't even been certified by the equivalent of the FCC in other countries.

There is a lot to be suspicious of, but skipping 1.3 and going straight to 1.4 is not

un-heard of.  Especially if it includes a new Android base level as well.

I think you get 30 day return policy on most it, i didn't check the fine print, but i could have swore i read that somewhere.

Also, whether or not it is speculation, it is written in the link... Nook 2. And i was merely stating that if its coming out already that is rediculous.

Re: New software next week, new nook models later in 2010?

When I bought my Nook in the store, the salesperson said "14 day return policy and if it is open, there is a restocking fee."  I think it absolutely sucks to have a 14-day return policy.  I've had mine for two weeks now and I'm still deciding on the good and the bad.  But he was very open about it at the time of purchase and I did it anyway.

It sounds like you still have 4 days left.  If you're not happy, don't wait too long to return it.  For me, I'm happy enough.  There will always be a newer/better model coming up down the road, so if I decide to wait to get it, then I'll be unhappy in the months of waiting, so I'd rather get it now and be happy with what I have than wait to get a better model.
