I just sent the following email to B&N Customer Service and I am wondering how some of you feel about the $25 B&N Membership Card and the benefits. After all the recent hoopla about the membership benefit of free express shipping on a $10 order I suddenly realized all the books are the same price now for members and nonmembers...and of course there is no ebook discount ever...what does B&N think is attractive about the membership now?

My membership expires at the end of this month, and I will not be renewing for the same reason.

I let mine lapse on 12/31 and am glad I did!

Same here. The checkout guy even sympathized with me and complained (!) that it seemed like a betrayal. Wasn't expecting such honesty but just shows the disconnect between corporate and the real world.

All I've ever gotten is just a shoulder shrug when I explain why I've let my membership lapse.
It's a shame.

Thanks for your replies here. I just keep hoping somehow the more we talk about it we might get more than a shrug as deb53WA experienced. I guess I somehow hope corporate will take notice and realize their membership is not very attractive anymore and needs some changes and more benefits. It might as well be free as the Borders one is for all it is going to do for the customer.

Borders gives great email discounts for free.
Unless B&N offers a substantial discount for eBooks, I have no interest in paying $25 for a membership.

Until I purchased my nook I bought the majority of my books from Borders; I received weekly discount coupons for 10-30% off & there was no annual fee.

I think the membership is attractive only for certain people with particular spending habits.
If you don't have a store nearby, then getting a membership is competely absurd. I totally agree with that.
If you do have a store nearby, then the discount applies also to magazines and anything at the coffee shop.
I am lucky to have the Fort Lauderdale store nearby. I purchase about 8 magazines per month, a few of which are from the UK and sell for around $15. I purchased the membership because I know I will get my money back. Just a year's worth of Photoshop Creative will return me $18. I also buy coffee and something to eat from time to time, and I get 10% discount on that.
And yes, I know that I can directly subscribe to magazines and have them delivered to my home. Unfortunately, the postal service isn't always kind to large magazines and I am fussy that way.

You get those from BN too. Weekly emails are sent out every Tuesday.
The idea behind changing the member discount for online purchases was to better compete with Amazon. Giving everyone the same price (roughly) that Amazon is charging instead of just members opens the site to more people who might not have bought here before. The free expedited shipping is basically to give members something online, it isn't great, but it's the same thing as Amazon Prime at a third of the cost.
The discounts in the store remain the same.

Look, having worked for B&N in the past (I emphasize not currently ,and I am in no way speaking for the company, only about my opion/view of this issue) I can tell the membership is a numbers game.
On the store/employee side there are quotas and perfromance expectations. They are required to ask every customer if they have or want to get one. A certain percentage of their register transactions MUST be a new membership sale or renewal of an existing membership. The overall store has budgeted sales targets for memberships. At the store level, it's all about the sell.
From a customer standpoint (and I was honest enough to explain it to my customers this way), if you have certain buying habits it is worth it. Membership is $25. If you're walking in, buying a Rosetta Stone language program for $539 it makes sense to buy a memebership right then and there. You'll save $54. Subtract cost of membership and you're up $29 dollars. The rest of the year's savings are gravy.
On the other hand, if you're the customer who maybe buys a magazine and some drinks in the cafe to the tune of only $10 a month, you would only save $12 a year. Subtract the cost of membership and you're just giving B&N $13 a year cause you like them and can't do math.
The average customer falls somewhere between these ridiculous extremes. You have to decide for yourself, based on your anticipated spending habits (how much overall spend, are the items I want eligible for discounts) whether membership falls past the break-even point for you.
I don't like many things about the membership program, but many people save $$$ with it. I really think it is an obsolete program that is just kept around because it does turn a profit for the company.
Existing members, you can call to see how much you've saved in the last year if you haven't kept track of your receipts yourself.
Just my two cents.

I can tell you over the years I've had the membership, it's more than paid for itself, several times over. Last year I spent over $1200 dollars at B&N (after all the discounts) so I got my money back. The year before it was about $2000. Although at this point, I intend to not renew it in August, I could conceivable look at it that those two years alone would cover the cost of another year.
Depending on what I think my spending might be, the free express shipping might be worth it for me, as I tend to send physical books as birthday and Christmas gifts. Which I'm going to do in the next few days. And there are still a few authors I may continue to buy the HC book when it comes out, as part of my "collection".

I agree and as long as one intends to purchase books for others as gifts, and/or as long as the eBook version is not available (or if it is, it's ridiculously priced), I anticipate saving money with my membership.

Not quite! Did you know you can share a Prime Membership with up to 4 other people???? It cuts the cost way down (below the cost of a BN membership) and you get free shipping for much more than just books, in fact it's almost anything they sell... Don't forget with Amazon it's true two day shipping (I usually get my things in 1 day) and BN isn't. I had the free express shipping on my nook (we were members when we ordered it) and it took longer than 3 days to get here.

That would be assuming you know 4 other people who use Amazon. I don't know anyone else, so it is not any type of deal for me.
The programs offered by the companies are different some will work well for one group of people, but not for another. The B&N program works well for me because I don't have anyone to share the Amazon prime with. Each program has it's advantages and disadvantages, chose the one that works best for you.

I'm going to let mine expire since I purchase mainly ebooks now. When I do want to get a HC such as with a series I've been collecting or a book for the kids, I can just get them at Amazon, their prices have always beat BN's, even with membership.
If B&N wanted to keep me as a member they could - reduce the price of the membership to $15 or offer something like 1 free drink of your choice at the café once a month, or some other incentive.

This is true.
Just a tip, there have been many 'Amazon Prime Relationships' built on message boards!

Me again! I always felt my B&N Membership was very much worth it...even when I lived in Pittsburgh and had stores near. Books were just cheaper online than in the store and then you received an extra 10% online on top of the lower than store costs and shipping was free for a minimum $25 order (and until a few years ago there was no tax on online purchases!). I purchased a lot of books, hardback and paperback. I used to even go to the store and find books and then come home and order them online for much less than at the store. Also I also should mention members do get 15% or 20% off one item for online or in store use frequently.
Also I admit if one lives near a B&N and buys magazines and frequents the cafe with regularity there is also a membership perk there...but many of us either cannot (don't live near one) or simply do not. I have always been an online shopper for books and have always shopped B&N with great loyalty. I liked the site format and the membership discount and trusted them.
Now with all books priced the same the 10% advantage is gone. The aforementioned coupon is not good on eBooks or preorders of any book. Granted the free shipping is good but I can easily send/spend $25 for free shipping. And mainly for so many of us our book buying has changed with a huge focus on eBooks that never had a discount. Yes I will still buy some new releases of a few authors in hardback...but my price is the same on BN whether I am a member or not and in all honesty with a release once a year for the most part by these authors I'll just wait and order a couple books together and get free shipping. Also one can always find a coupon on the sites.
For someone who is able and enjoys buying all their books in store, is not into eBooks, and uses the cafe the membership is a good thing. But the membership benefits for much of their customer base is becoming nonexistent for the price.
However there is a lot of advantage to the B&N shopper with the B&N Mastercard. That is good for 5% savings on everything including eBooks and a Nook.
I do hope management reads these boards but somehow I wonder if they ever do...all the market research they need is right here for free!

@bjmbarb
Go through Bing.com to get to bn.com and you score an additional 8% (the current rate, subject to change) cash back on your purchases, again on anything. You don't receive the money for 60 days but hey you get it!
My AMEX gives me 5% back on bn.com so I combine that with bing and it's not bad. ![]()
I just let the money build up for a year then pull it out to help with Christmas shopping. I never purchase anything online (unless I know the best price is at Amazon) without checking to see if bing works with the vendor.
