BEWARE OF ONLINE SCAM - "The Reading Site"

Beware of a site called "The Reading Site" which offer unlimited e-books for a number of devices including the nook. Their claim is that for a one-time fee of $49.95 + tax you can download books, newspapers and magazines at will. I was cautious and did my due diligence prior to trying to sign up. The site looked legit and I read a number of reviews about it however after inputting credit card info etc. nothing worked. I have reported them to Visa and to the authorities.

You did pretty minor due diligence considering the add offers Harry Potter and other books not available legally in E book format and their legal section states that they have no data bases, they just prove the connections for members to up and download books.

I would think reading their site would be enough for any reasonably intelligent person to figure out the site is a scam.

Sorry you got caught, be more careful next time.

Not to mention that any site offering unlimited downloading of eBooks for a flat fee pretty much has to be a scam or not legit.  It would pop up on my radar immediately.

However, sorry you got caught, hope they don't charge you or if they do, Visa blocks the charge.

Don't try to buy an e-book on e-bay either.  Or buy a used nook with e-books on it.

From the description, it sounds like the site is not trying to bill anyone just collect credit card numbers. What you would see are charges to legitimate companies. Those charges could show up at anytime, even years down the road.

I would cancel the credit card.

gstone, I think you are right.  I agree with the other poster, I would contact Visa and cancel the credit card, just to be on the safe side.

Visa said the transaction was in progress. They said that after two days they would launch an investigation. Whatever that means...

[ Edited ]

There are known sites for credit card number "hijacking" - whether this is one or not, I cannot say.

However, if ever (should be in caps "EVER") you have a question about a site that you have used your credit card # on, then immediately cancel that card and number.  Better safe than sorry, there are ways that once they have the number, that multiple other pieces of private data attached to the card can be accessed by "naughty" people.

At that point canceling the card # becomes moot - they are already signing you up for lots and lots of additional credit that you never knew you had, and in hindsight wish that you did not, and now have to clear off your name.

Identity theft is a huge issue, here in the states and offshore.  Where ever possible use a 3rd party pay procedure - such as PayPal (watch for phishing on PalPal, been known to happen).  There are other 3rd party pass through pay sites, but this is the best known, well secured, and really quite a bit safer in the long run than directly using your credit card # for the transaction.

Granted not every site takes PalPal and their relatives, but check for the VeriSign and other secure "tags" that the site advertises, they generally will link to the security vendor site.

Yes there have been aberrations of the security tagging in some "hijacking" sites, but then again.....nothing is really fool proof, just be aware and cautious in all on line transactions.  Better skeptical and not hitting the send button, than spending years trying to clean up the  mess.

Probably "please hold...your call is very important to us"...followed by "thank you for using VISA"

Actually, the best idea on new sites that you have any question about is to use a one-use credit card number, which some credit card companies allow you to generate online. You can often set a limit, the amount and date, on how long it is valid, as well.

Re: BEWARE OF ONLINE SCAM - "The Reading Site"

I'm generally a very cautious person when it comes to online purchases - I was naive and dumb this morning. Visa put a hold on the transaction and  cancelled the card. This was a card we got specifically for on-line purchases and it has a very low credit limit. I couldn't care less about the $50 bucks I may have to pay -  more worried about the possible implications of them having my name/address/IP address...dumb, dumb, dumb...and wiser...

I have a Discover card and they let you set up secure online account numbers that are only good for one vendor.  They have the same expiration date as your actual card, but are only good for the initial vendor.  These are good for recurring charges like a default card at BN, or say, to pay a recurring bill.  When your actual card expires, you simply update the expiration date on the online secure card.

My Mastercard offers a different process, it's a card with a value limit and and expiration date you set.  These are good for one time purchases at a vendor, like the site you just went to.

Both have their uses, at least for me.

Re: BEWARE OF ONLINE SCAM - "The Reading Site"

I fell for it too.  I was hoping to find a book site for rentals, like you can rent movies on iTunes.  I read reviews and since I am not a Harry Potter fan (gasp!), I didn't pay attention to that.  I gave it a shot, and it connected me with a website that anyone can access for free!  The free books are in the public domain, and the rest must be purchased.  "unlimited access" is similar to what we have at barnesandnoble.com - access, but you have to purchase the books you want!

There currently are no sites (legal) for rentals, the publishers haven't evolved that far yet.

You can get books from the public library and read them on the Nook however.

Nate had a story about them last week.

Cancel that card IMMEDIATELY! They only wanted your card number and have probably already used it!
