Re: Backing up Nookbooks

So I'm curious to know how many people if any are backing up their nookbooks and how folks are doing this? A friend mentioned that I am putting too much faith in the B&N online library that house all my ebooks (over 200). But since it is on their website I figured I was okay cause I would get a refund at the very least if my books went missing because their site crashed right? However now I'm worried about losing my Nook library because I don't have it backed up and saved anywhere else. Any opinions or thoughts would be appreciated.

I backup all my books to my desktop.  While yes B&N are likely to stay around for several years, the future is unpredictable.  Even Fictionwise use to say 'we will always store your books online' then change it to 'we will do our best but it is best if you download them in a months time to be sure'.

I would back them up to the computer, and then DVD/CD them for safe keeping.  How I back my nook up easily is by using a open source program called free file sync.  It is on sourceforge.  Works wonderfully for backing up/maintaining a up to date backup of your Nook's B&N content. :smileyhappy:  Just make sure that you don't delete files on your computer when you have archived them on your nook (to save space for example).  I use the "update only" option and don't allow it to do a full sync for this reason.  Anyway easy to use yet powerful program for backing up ones nook (or any other files).

Re: Backing up Nookbooks

I am prone to breaking things, and my nookcolor has already been replaced.  Don't even know why I have it, the classic would of been better since i rarely need to color part.  I have all of my books backed up on my external because of fear of loosing them.  My brother lost all of his a month or so ago when his nook broke and was really sad.  All of mine are in nice little folders on my external.

Ok,

They sent me back my nook. It appears to be fixed, I can't believe they replaced the screen, it seems pretty expensive!  Also I had the cosmetic cracks in by both bezels and had not mentioned them but the casing was replaced as well. I wonder why they did not just cut a check? Good thing I did not buy a new nook ahead of time anticipating the check! I read on my phone for a couple of weeks.

Are you sure it is the same unit and not a replacement?

I thought the same thing at first.  But then I realized that SquareTrade wouldn't have the ability to put all of his current ebooks onto a new unit (whereas B&N would - at least for the BN library, though I can't imagine that they would take the time to do that).  So, if the Nook had books loaded when it arrived back with the fixed screen and bezel, I'd say that indicates repair rather than replacement.

Re: Backing up Nookbooks

I am sure it is the same one, my books were on it and the serial number is the same as the one I had. I thought it was pretty strange as well. Maybe they are fixing them because they get a lot and have the parts? When I bought it, I think I paid 258/259 ish and if I were to buy one new now they are 199. They are saving 60 dollars by repairing it if they can get it repaired for under that, I just assumed that the screens cost more money than that but maybe not.

Re: Backing up Nookbooks

I've been busy adding some tags to my books in Calibre (thanks to all who recommended this great program!) Is there a way to add the covers to the books as well?

Yes...highlight the book, then click on 'edit metadata' at the top of the Calibre screen. This will open the metadata window, here you can either 'fetch metadata' (left side of screen) to get all the metadata for the book, including the cover or 'download cover' (middle of screen) to just get the cover. The latter method may take a little more work on your part if the program can't find the cover...you can actually 'save as' a cover image to your desktop from B&N, then have Calibre 'browse' for the cover. Hope this helps...:smileyhappy:
