Re: Bible on nook?

I haven't found any of the bible versions to be very easy with navigation.  But a few ideas in this thread make me think that navigation with the nook touchscreen could be increase dramatically with a design similar to how it is used in the browser.  That would allow much quicker selection of links, highlighting and word lookup.  Maybe an update for version 1.6.

Globaltech you can put words in other peoples mouths and then deny it, but the bottom line is you have been very rude to this poster. I am not very religious either, but there was absolutely no need to say the bible is a book of fiction when you KNOW the original poster believes in it and it would cause controversy.  It was beside the point anyway!

If you haven't noticed these forums are very informative and respectful. Keep it that way!

While I do not believe in the fictional book, the bible, as being fact, my saying so has zero bearing on this thread. The OP said, essentially, it's factual.  I disagree.  I have a right to counter religeous zealots in a polite and forum-rule abiding manner.

Some cults like to spread their philosophies in forums all the time.

I'm sorry if you think this rude.  I'm sorrier that you failed to see I was willing to help spread the word by creating a fully interactive and usable bible for those who wanted one.

The OP caused friction once posting a religious topic.  I tried to be very respectful of that and simply stated that I do not believe and I actually addressed her/his reason for posting in the first place which was lack of navigation.

All you are doing is simply attacking somebody who wants to make the bible more accessible.  Is that what Jesus would want?

So many of you seem to want to focus on just me, instead of what I actually have said and completely ignore the fact that i'd work on an interactive bible for the colornook.

It simply doesn't matter whether I believe or not.  The christian thing to do would be to say, I hope you enjoy and/or learn something from the book.

All I hear is hate.  How very Christian.

I understand that your original question was a search for information for an eBible that was easily navigable, but I think ultimately you will have to appeal directly to the publishers, or the creators of the eBible you are interested in for a better navigation system.

Which is what I'm willing to spend hundreds of hours on making.

Who's more Christian, a non-believer who works to spread the word or one who condemns them for doing so?

Yup. I'm with you on this.  Even though you would have to spend hundreds of hours on it, you would probably still finish before the publishers did - if they even got to the request in a hundred hours.

So how much added cost to an eBible do you think there would there be with the addition of the GlobalTech eBook Navigation System (GeNS)?  You know - ballpark.

I hereby promise to begin all my message board postings from now on with:

"I am a follower of science and rationality with all of my heart."

As in:

I am a follower of science and rationality with all of my heart. When's the new Amy Winehouse album finally coming out?

or

I am a follower of science and rationality with all of my heart. Does anyone have a recipe for Nanaimo Bars?

or even

I am a follower of science and rationality with all of my heart. Do you think Mom would like a nook color for her birthday?

As for me, my prayers would totally be answered if someone produced a completely indexed, hyperlinked ebook version of Krafft-Ebing. Now that would be a time saver.

Seriously.. $9.95.  Who wouldn't want the joy of Jesus at their easily accessible fingertips?

And we aren't just talking a basic ebook that's set and forgot.  Oh sure, the first version would be chapters, updated versions of the same book, would be available for download as well at no additional cost... so when more links are added, it grows.

Want chapters, sure get version 1.0.  Want chapters and versus... versions 1.1 thru 1.8.

The published book can be updated.  It's not static.. well, it doesn't have to be as most are.  Any updates can be redownloaded if there is a new version of the book.

While I am indeed working on my own novel and have high plans for children's books with the new nook color, I'm very open to doing what I do best, which is reproduction and linking.

The artwork may be a bit difficult to come by... I hope those who praise jesus won't mind me using their artwork though.  I'll surely ask first but will be also glad to publish in the book sites that refused to share Jesus.  I expect there will be many.

But from a technical point of view, the easy navigation is easy to accomplish.

Re: Bible on nook?

I've really enjoyed this thread.  I also see an opportunity to apply the same linking and reference to other great Myths.  I'd personally like to see the Star Wars books outlined in a similar fashion.  But I'm sure there are other "True" and "Only" religions that could benefit from your work.

Thanks for the afternoon fun!

And when is the next Amy Winehouse album going to be released.

Re: Bible on nook?

Well, Star Wars is a much much higher level of anthology and documentation. There are simply more facts in support of Star Wars than the bible.

Not only is that copyrighted, but there are simply tons of information to correlate, unlike the bible which still, no thanks to draconian copyright laws, remains uncopyrighted.

But you are absolutely right the the ease of navigation in all books will be greatly eased by the nookcolor... well, at least books designed for nookcolor.

Imagine the ultimate pokemon book (not that I have any idea about pokemon) but being able to link all those characters would be epic for those who are interested.

Self-published magazines sold as e-books.. (self-published cannot probably get listed unless the are a corporate magazine on the offical list)

So many do not understand the absolute change of culture that we are about to embrace... with nook color being the leading edge tech to do so.

Traditional books being enhanced with e-content, like mp3's, voices or recordings.  Yes, i will cost extra, but I think most of us would enjoy that audio recording mentioned in a book by hearing it rather than reading it.

Re: Bible on nook?

It won't work on a Nook, but if you have a laptop, there's an excellent free Bible program that works on a PC or Mac. See http://www.bible-explorer.com/

I've been using it for about four years now. It comes with the King James translation, and you can add other translations for easy comparison. Many of these other translations are also free, but newer ones (such as The Message or the Amplified Bible) come at a charge. You can also download free commentaries, dictionaries, maps, etc. that are integrated into the program so that when you open Matthew 5, the commentary will also jump to Matthew 5.

To read a particular chapter and verse, all you need do is type the reference (such as Matthew 5:3) into the box at the top of the window and you're there. It also has full search capabilities, alllowing you to search specific areas (such as the Books of Moses, or Paul's Epistles) or the entire Bible. It's pretty slick.

The King James Version (KJV) Holy Bible

This is the version I ended up buying.  Not bad for a buck, but it could be better.  There is a listing of all books in the back with hyperlinks to "quickly" jump to whichever one you want, but I still find it slower than a regular bible.  I use something like this more for home use.  For when you need to quickly flip around from book to book, I haven't found anything that beats the printed version.

I have a couple bibles and this is the only one so far that is actually useable in the way that most people read the bible. I do recommend it.

Re: Bible on nook?

I'm ignoring the ludicrousness in this thread...

OP: I have also searched for a better e-book version of the Bible for my NOOK.  I have friends with both Cokesbury and the United Methodist Publishing House (both based in Nashville where I am from and 99% of the people that work there went to my church which disproves the statement that those people aren't Christian).  I have even asked them to work on getting a better e-book version (preferably NLT or NIV).  I am hoping it is in development!

Dear Katie,

This is one of the primary reasons I consider the eink (original) Nook superior to other ereaders - the secondary LCD would be ideal for a tree-structured index! Perhaps by version 2.0?

In the meantime, the most helpful suggestion I can offer is that there are numerous Bible texts available for free download, most of them truly labors of love! One that appears well-indexed that might meet your needs may be found at the Mobileread forum (epub direct download: http://www.mobileread.mobi/forums/attachment.php?s=4e5ad0af21e25e1e235be022f4966e28&attachmentid=420...

Excellent Bible study tools for your PC are also plentiful, among them a fine collection of concordances at http://www.biblestudytools.com/concordances/

Last but not least I commend to your attention the audio Bibles offered by www.firefighters.org at http://server.firefighters.org/kjv.asp as downloadable mp3 files for any audio player.

Re: Bible on nook?

I have the ESV version on my Nook.  And it is hard to use.  Acually having to scroll through any list is hard to do if there are more than 8 items as it is impossible to control where the scrolling stops.

If you have a DRM free version it might be possible to experiment with Sigil to put in book, chapter and verse breaks.  I use Sigil to put in Chapter breaks, but I haven't experimented with how to link footnotes or other links.

I consider the Nook as a paperback reader designed to read from start to finish.  It might be that you need to use the Nook for devotional reading rather than for serious study where you have to flip pages.

Re: Bible on nook?

The Bible is a large book and it does take time to navigate on the noon. I would love it if publishers would include a way of searching for a verse. i.e. 1 John 4:19. That would make navigating much faster for use in Sunday school, Bible study or church service. As it is now, I have three Bibles. The NIV on my nook for travel, my NIV study Bible for home and Bible study, and my ESV for church service.

And ignore Globaltech. It has a history of a having a need to offend others. Pray for him/her and move on.

Re: Bible on nook?

I have purchased three different bibles (American, King James, and NIV) for my Nook, and I have experienced navigation problems with all of them.

When you change your focus, you will change your results.

Been a while since I've seen a message from JP51 - good to see you, sir.

I agree that Globaltech is an agent provacateur and his attempts at baiting should be ignored.  But he seems sincere in wanting to format a good e-book version of the Bible for Nook.  God works in mysterious ways, indeed.  But I might suggest that G-tech actually read, study the Bible before claiming that it's a "novel" or that Star Wars has more historical "factual" support than the Bible.

G-tech, I admire you as an outspoken radical.  Jesus was one too.  But insulting people of faith is not the way to go.

The Holy Bible English Standard Version (ESV)

This is the one I have for my Nook.  I bought it, but it now appears to be free.  It does have clumsy, time-consuming navigation.  But so does a sailboat, and those are still lots of fun.
