Since 1997, you’ve been coming to BarnesandNoble.com to discuss everything from Stephen King to writing to Harry Potter. You’ve made our site more than a place to discover your next book: you’ve made it a community. But like all things internet, BN.com is growing and changing. We've said goodbye to our community message boards—but that doesn’t mean we won’t still be a place for adventurous readers to connect and discover.

Now, you can explore the most exciting new titles (and remember the classics) at the Barnes & Noble Book Blog. Check out conversations with authors like Jeff VanderMeer and Gary Shteyngart at the B&N Review, and browse write-ups of the best in literary fiction. Come to our Facebook page to weigh in on what it means to be a book nerd. Browse digital deals on the NOOK blog, tweet about books with us,or self-publish your latest novella with NOOK Press. And for those of you looking for support for your NOOK, the NOOK Support Forums will still be here.

We will continue to provide you with books that make you turn pages well past midnight, discover new worlds, and reunite with old friends. And we hope that you’ll continue to tell us how you’re doing, what you’re reading, and what books mean to you.

Bought a Nook on Craigslist

[ Edited ]

As the title reads, I bought a Nook on Craigslist yesterday.

I went home, happy with my new purchase and found out today that the purchase I made was a poor one. The nook works great functionally, but I am unable to register my account to it. I have now learned that I am unable to register my account because the prior account holder hasn't unregistered his account.

Where does this leave me?

Well, I could choose one of three options:

1. To continue using my illegitimate nook and hand load my books onto it via USB

2. I could hope in all honest to goodness that the buyer "unregisters" the nook from his/her account.

3. (Good Karma Method) I could drop off the nook at the nearest Barnes and Nobles, lose my investment and never ever ever hear from the actual owner of the book ever again. No thanks, no words, nothing.

- I wouldn't be able to help him/her find out who stole it from him or identify the person who I bought it from.

I understand B&N's customer privacy, but is it possible at all to send the original owner an email or message that lets him/her know their 'nook' is okay? Where does this leave me (besides screwed :smileyvery-happy:, I already know that)?

Re: Bought a Nook on Craigslist

Can't you unregister it from the nook?

Ah. Yes, but the person who sold it to me did a factory reset. So.... No.

That shouldn't have any effect.

Although we should probably get a person smarterer than me to answer :smileyhappy:.

@Atrus

Welcome!  :smileyhappy:

Can't you reconnect with the seller from Craigslist long enough for him/her to unregister the Nook?

That should do it.

And if for some reason it doesn't, if you call Customer Service at 1-800-THE-BOOK (1-800-843-2665) together and select Option 2, Digital Support, they should be willing to clear it up for you, with both the original owner and the new owner vouching for the situation.

Good luck, and enjoy your Nook. :smileyhappy:

Re: Bought a Nook on Craigslist

All of which assumes that the seller was the original owner. As those in the Kindle forums have long ago found out, many of the ereaders sold on Craigslist and eBay are stolen (or honestly lost) and once reported to Amazon, become bricks, unable to be used by anyone (so, no doubt, end up in a landfill).

@Karen

Yes, I had that thought, too.  Hoping it doesn't turn out to be the case for the OP.  :smileyindifferent:

Re: Bought a Nook on Craigslist

deregistering it shouldn't be a problem, unless it's been blacklisted or has been password protected.

To deregister:

turn on the nook

tap the 'n' in the center between the screens and it will take you to the home screens

on the bottom screen is an icon labeled settings

(it looks like a gear, and will be on the far right, you may have to slide the icons to find it)

the deregister option will either become avalable then or you may have to select "device information" to bring it up

If that does not work

Call 1-800 the book (843-2665) and ask specifically if it's been blacklisted, If the technician can't answer, or won't, ask to speak to a supervisor. If they still won't, ask if they will send your contact information to the owner so that the owner can contact you.
