Dictionary Options

I am told there is no way of replacing the Merriam Webster's Collegiate dictionary the Nook comes with. Would be a nice option considering the number of different purposes readers' use such conveniences.

Re: Dictionary Options

You use this for reading. The fact that it doesn't offer you the possibility to use multiple dictionaries, for multiple languages (as Sony, Kindle readers allow you to) really sucks

Re: Dictionary Options

My language is not english, and I like to use another dictionary to translate english vs my language. If only I can install an other dictionary, my nook reeding experience will be perfect.

P.S. i'm italian

Pronunciation Key

I'd like to see a pronunciation key on each page just like in a paper dictionary..  Sometimes definitions contain words I don't know.  I'd like to be able to look up an unknown word in the dictionary by holding my finger on it just like I can do in an EPub.

Re: Dictionary Options

Agreed.  This is my number one complaint about the Nook.  It was built for the English speaking US market only.  This narrowness of mind is common across small companies.  For some reason, they haven't realized that there's a whold world out there.  It's a form of ethnocentrism I believe.  Hopefully B&N's executives will read/listen/act.

Blame the publishers who restricted B&N's license to act as agent selling books to US customers. Until that changes B&N makes no money from International customers, which gives them little reason to invest money developing non-English dictionary's or multilingual menus (except for Spanish speaking residents of the US - more common than other non-English speaking US residents)

Re: Dictionary Options

This is a very interesting topic, which raises anothr issue I have with the Nook.  I bought my Nook (the original) to take with me to Qatar during my year of employment over there.  I was shocked and infuriated to discover that to purchase a book with my Nook, I had to be physically present in the USA, which struck me as totally irrational.  Furhtermore, I was bemused to find out that by downloading a Kindle App to my iPad, I was able to purchase US books abroad from Amazon as long as I had an American billing address and American credit card.

Needless to say, this is a terrific competitive edge for Amazon for Americans who travel, for whom an e-reader is a major convenience.  Is there an explanation for the disparity with which publishers treat B&N and Amazon.  In any case, why would a publisher object to its books being purchased by Americans, wherever the location?

According to B&N, they changed their policy a few months back to be the same.
