What's happening on my charge is I'm getting a "pending charge" for $1.00 on free books, but then it's reversed (or drops off, there's no actual credit).

Yes, that token charge (or actually just a hold) for $1.00 seems to show up for about a day when you "buy" a free book, then goes away. Nobody's ever been able to figure out why the system finds it necessary.
Because the B&N DRM uses the credit card to create the key, and even many free books have DRM, the system needs to "ping" the credit card, to make sure it is still valid. To to this, they basically have to charge an amount, sometimes it's $0.01 sometimes $1.00. It should fall off and never become a "real" charge on your statement. A lot of companies do this when you buy something from them, I see it a lot, I get a $1.00 pending charge and then eventually the actual charge.
