Today's free friday book is
Night Shade recently began offering NOOK Book editions of their titles, and you can look forward to two more upcoming Free Fridays selections to introduce you to their fantastic books.
Today, we’re featuring God's War by Kameron Hurley. In Hurley’s captivating debut, she creates a far-future world on a planet consumed by constant war and struggle. While this imaginary world may seem far from our own, the complex issues this book explores bring up many questions about our own current struggles. As Publishers Weekly wrote: "Hurley's world-building is phenomenal... (she) smoothly handles tricky themes such as race, class, religion, and gender without sacrificing action." Cyberpunk meets military SciFi in an adventure that will appeal to a wide range of readers.

Something out of the ordinary, which is good, but I can't see myself reading it.

Sweet, the publisher looks promising, the genre is certainly up my alley. Definitely checking this one out, and I'm almost done with my current book too. . .

Yeah, this one is a nice change of pace, but they do select a wide variety of books, I think people just focus on the number romance novels, chick lit as many have coined the term, and all the vampire books, but they really select a nice selection from time to time, I enjoyed the Bone Rattler from two weeks ago for example and I will download and I think enjoy this one.

I downloaded it and will give it a try. What the heck, I can't lose and I might wind up enjoying it. Thanks for the posting.
p.s. At least its not Amish vampire chick lit.![]()

Indeed, since starting to regularly check the FF sometime last summer I've gotten a really wide range of genres. I think people are just into complaining a lot. Their loss.

what irritates me are the people who are giving the book itself a bad review because they don't like it as a FF choice. People can be so childish sometimes.

Where did that come from? When I do the FF I don't ever give a review one way or the other, I simply give the information out.

Shadowcat,
I don't believe that was directed at you. If you go to the FF listing you'll see comments referring to people giving the book a bad review without reading it.

whoa, I didnt say a thing about you, or your posts on this board. If you go to look at the book for purchase and check the reviews there are numerous ones there giving 1 star and complaining about FF books.

There is at least one review on the book's page on this site that gives it a one star review for being a crappy free friday book. It goes on to complain about the quality of the free books. That's the gist of the review anyway. I didn't read past the first page to see if there were any more useless 1 star reviews for it. There were more than one 5 star review underneath it blasting the 1 star review, but they hadn't even bothered to read it, just mad at the 1 star . It appears that no one reviewing this book at B&N actually read it (at least on the first page of reviews).

I just downloaded this for free from Borders on Wednesday and side-loaded it to my NOOK.
I guess I'll be bad and get it from B&N as well so it will be in my B&N Library.

I didn't read the reviews on the book page, When I clicked on the link for the book I went right to buying it and skipped the book page. That does sound immature, why try ruining the experience for others because of your bad attitude? Makes no sense.

I also find it irritating when reviewers give 5 stars to a book they haven't read with a comment like 'Looking forward to reading it'

I would never consider even downloading a free book without reading reviews first. I'd like to think I'm more selective than just downloading everything B&N posts in FF even though I obviously have the space for it on my Nook.
That does not mean I believe all the reviews or that they make my decision for me. I just like to read them.

I use the information that Unbound blog gives it to decide, If it's in my wheelhouse of reading I'll download it because it's really a low risk decision if I don't like the book I can get rid of it later. But, if its romance which I don't read, or just something else that isn't appealing I don't get that week's one.

Me, too! I was looking at a book a couple weeks ago, a preorder that doesn't come out for a couple more months I think. I can't remember now which book it was off the top of my head. But it had dozens of 5 star reviews already, all basically stating they couldn't wait to read it, they loved the author and was sure it would be great. Um, the book doesn't even come out for weeks yet, you can't give a review of a book you'll read in the future.
I found it highly annoying!

B&N needs to disable comments for the Free Friday book, I think, at least for that day. These one star reviews are ridiculous. I actually would not mind if you could not review any book that you had not actually purchased from B&N (as in paid for).
