Ghosting of Text

I spent an hour yesterday trying to read on my nook, but the text was very faint.  I tried everything from rebooting to full shut down and remove/replace the battery.  When put to sleep, I could still read the text in the wall paper image.  It looked just like when you gently shake an etch-a-sketch one time, but you can still just see the lines.

I called CS and they issued an RMA and when I get my replacement I will send mine in.

Has anyone else had this issue?

Re: Ghosting of Text

The only ghosting I ever get is when I put my Nook to sleep and a darker screensaver comes up, much of the time I can faintly see the text of the page I was on right before I put it to sleep.  This, however, is normal and when I am reading a page of text, the screensaver is never ghosted there (which is good because it would be hard to read in that case).

Screen Shot!!!

Lay it face down on a scanner, or shoot a close up Photo and upload to a free PhotoBucket.com account.

This can happen when the erase cycle of page display does not allow enough time.  It usually indicates a slow screen (the physical e-ink display is slower than normal).  The only way around this is to allow the erase cycle to be longer (a software fix to allow a user adjustment) or to replace the nook.  B&N apparently feels that the additional complexity of a user adjustable erase cycle is more trouble than replacing the nook.

Several people reported this, but nobody posted any convincing photos of it interfering with reading.  So while you still have it, it would be really great to get a screen shot.

Yes, I get this kind of ghosting from time to time too.  When it goes to the screen-saver I can see the entire printed page of what I was just reading in the background of the wallpaper.    I've tried capturing it on camera but it just doesn't show up enough to see what I'm talking about.   I do know exactly what you're talking about however!

The best shot I've been able to take of ghosting is when turning airplane mode on,   the text 'The' at the beginning is from the previous page and you can see the 'eled' at the end from the word disabled from the previous page still showing through.   I think it's the white background vs the black background of my wallpaper that makes it easier to see in this instance.

I've never had it show up actually inside a book though so for me it's not worth fooling around with a return.

Yes, that status line on the WiFi screen is a bug. The software fails to clear the old status line before writing the new status.

It's not a problem with the display.

Re: Ghosting of Text

Exactly right, Doug.  Its not a display problem.

Nor is it "ghosting".

Nor would it appear while reading, which is the subject of this thread.

So again, a plea for a screenshot.

Ask and you shall receive, I tried for over an hour to fix this....very difficult to read.  I took this picture so in case no one believed me.

Re: Ghosting of Text

Yes, your etch-a-sketch is clearly starting to clump up.  Too much moisture. :smileywink:

Nice to have that image so we have a reference photo for this.

I'm guessing page back then forward does not fix this?

I'm guessing this is with all books, not just This book?

In this photo, the ghosting of prior pages is not a evident as the fade out of the current page.

It definitely looks like something needing replacement.

Re: Ghosting of Text

I tried the following;  page forward, page back, change font size, change font type, put to sleep, change wallpaper, reboot, remove and replace battery and other books, internet, daily...etc.

Nothing fixed it, CS was very nice and I should have my new one on Wednesday.  Then I will unregister this one and send it back.

Re: Ghosting of Text

Received my replacement Nook today, so far so good.  I did notice that they are no longer using that plastic shipping container that needed instructions to open.  This one came in a box that looked like the old package, but was cardboard with a cutout and foam where the nook was.  Much easier to remove!

It was preloaded with 1.3.

Re: Ghosting of Text

See any difference in the Pastic bezel?

And more importantly, Is your book displaying properly?

And, finally don't forget to unregister and remove your expansion MicroSD (if any) before shipping back the old one.  Glad you got that resolved.

Re: Ghosting of Text

I haven't noticed any difference in the bezel, hopefully it doesn't crack :smileyhappy:
