I was wondering if anyone that has received their Nook could please try and checkout a book using Overdrive from your public library. This is the biggest factor for me if I decide on Nooking. From everything I read it should work but you never know.

THANKS!

Hwere's how I use my Mesa library. Please note, I had to sign up for a library card 1st. That required going to the library. Then here's what I followed:

Technical Help: NetLibrary

In order to download material from NetLibrary you must login first or create an account.

NetLibrary

  • Login using your library card number and PIN.
  • You will see the Mesalibrary.org logo on the top right and a create a free account link
  • Click the free account link to setup your account

NetLibrary create a free account

  • Choose your material and begin your downloads

your library should have a similar procedure. Enjoy your many choices. Did you know you can even get them from the Library of Congress?

Netlibrary is not the same thing as Overdrive. Netlibrary only has pdf files that you read online on your computer. In order to have downloadable files that can be used on your Nook your library has to subscribe to Overdrive.

Re: Got Nook? Try Overdrive Library

I'm so sorry for your loss. I'm glad I was able to help lift your spirits.

Rocknsoul, let me offer my thanks to you. (I wanted to say "Marry me" but thought since this is only my second post, that the proposal might have been a little too soon!)

Read your response last night and immediately went to the Alachua County Library District. I signed up for an elibrary card which I now think is the best thing since buttered toast. I have just downloaded my first library book to my nook, and for that I thank you.

I live about an hour from Orlando. I went to a library there last week to get a library card so I can do the eBook thing. I did have other things to do in Orlando, so it wasn't just to get a card. So the last question I ask after they tell me that I can check out four items for two weeks since I'm a new patron is "does that include eBooks as well?" Well, guess what? It didn't, so I have an Orange County library card for nothing.

So last night when I saw your post, I started to get excited, and got even more excited when signing up for the elibrary card took only five minutes. And started to throw a party when I was able to download a book to my nook.

Once again, thank you, thank you, thank you.

You're very welcome, and thank YOU for the smile you brought to my face. I lost a dear friend to cancer this week, and your post gave me a much-needed lift today.:smileyhappy:

Re: Got Nook? Try Overdrive Library

Sounds like someone  out there got Overdrive to work on the NookColor?  I can't.  When downloading from the adobe site onto the NC, I get "sorry but your system does not meet the min sys. reqs."  I can download perfectly on my PC, but I don't know of any way to connect the NC to the PC - which is how my library told me I have to do it.

Overdrive is the service the libraries use to offer the library books, it isn't something you install on your Nook or your PC.  Overdrive Media Console, which you can download and maybe what you did download and install is for audio books.

To access library books you need Adobe Digital Editions installed on your computer.  You don't need any software installed on the device. You access the library books in ADE and then sideload to your Nook via the computer.  There's a link in my signature to setting up ADE.  It's written for the Nook, but the steps should be the same for the NookColor.

Re: Got Nook? Try Overdrive Library

There is a thread on the NookColor discussion board that details how to get this to work..It absolutely does work. I've been reading nothing but library books for weeks now.

First you have to sign up for Adobe Digital Editions..

Here's the link..Good luck..:smileyhappy:

I think they are talking about the overdrive app that is out for Android. I use it on my phone and it works.

Re: Got Nook? Try Overdrive Library

Thank you, these are perfect instructions for the Nook.   And I did mis-say it, I was trying the Adobe Digital Editions and got the "not enough sys reqs".   I have a Nook Color -- there's no USB port - is there another way to "side-load"?  Is this an "oops, we forgot to put that in"?

The charger port IS a USB port.

Re: Got Nook? Try Overdrive Library

I just got a Nook Color and thought I would be able to download the OverDrive app (just as on my iPhone) for access library books.  I haven't been able to figure it out.  How do you access librabry books from Nook Color?

You need to install ADE on your computer, open the books in ADE and side load to your NookColor through ADE.

Re: Got Nook? Try Overdrive Library

I downloaded Overdrive Media Console but it won't open and I have tried everything I can think of.

If anyone else has any ideas about solving this problem or downloading library books to my nook simple touch, I will be extremly gratefull!

Thanks!

Where did you download Overdrive Media Console?  Unless you've rooted the device, you can't download it to the NST.  You need to download Adobe Digital Editions on your computer to get library books.  You use ADE to download the library books to your computer and then transfer them to the NST using ADE.
