I am loving overdrive & the nook. I have checked out 4 books so far & have another 14 on my hold list. Our local library offers over 5500 ebooks!

I live in rural missouri and discovered to my delight that anyone living in Kasas and Missouri can get a free library card from the Kasas City Public library. I would love to get a card from a larger library--and would be willing to pay for the pivilage. The New York LIbrary no longer allows non-residents to purchase a card. Let me know if there are any other libraries out there for non-residents.
Thanks!

Help please!! I've done everything that has been posted so far. I downloaded a few books to ADE through Overdrive and I have my nook plugged in and it's showing on ADE. When I try to drag the books over to my nook it gives me an error saying "no permission to copy" I did register my computer but do I need to register my nook on ADE? Does the format matter? 2 books are PDF one is ePub. This is so frustrating right now!

I knew as soon as I asked I'd figure it out. I just had to disconnect and reconnect the nook to authorize it and the files copied. YEAH!!! I'm so excited to start reading my library books!

I've just downloaded a library book to my PC and I can open it in ADE. I've dragged the book to my nook in ADE and it appears under My Documents on the device. However, when I try to read the book on the nook, it tries to open it and then gives me an error that says "sorry, unable to open this book." I have successfully opened a different book that I purchased elsewhere, so I know that works. Help!

Tome-Reader,
If you see this, thanks for the info about the Ontario City LIbrary. I live in Orange County, and while the county library system does have overdrive, yesterday, when I checked, I couldn't find one book that was available for checkout, only to place on hold.
I'm pretty sure I can get a LA County library card and I'm going to look into the Ontario Public Library also.

Ok, right now I'm am just thrilled. I got a notice from the library that Kisser, by Stuart Woods was available for me. I went to the library site, checked out the book and loaded it on the Nook use ADE and am happily reading it now. Was very easy to do and this came at just the right time as I had just finished a book today and was trying to decide what to start next.
And, I found out that although the default check out time is 14 days, I can opt for 21 if I want.
Now, here's hoping library's get the funds to purchase more ebooks and more than 1 or 2 copies. I've got 3 others on hold, it will be interesting to see how long it takes for those.

I have a MAC and just couldn't see the Nook listed as a device in ADE. I read on the ADE help site that once you register your computer, shut down the ADE application, then plug your nook into the computer again, then start up the ADE application, and it will find the nook then and ask you to authorize it. Finally got it to work.

I love my nook, and I love that it works with overdrive. I wouldn't have bought an ereader that didn't try to work with customers. As for the price of ebooks, I think it's beyond ridiculous that publishers charge as much as a physical book. The cost of epublishing has got to be minimal.
I think ereading would be much bigger if the cost of the ebooks came down lower than the cost of a paperback. Just my opinion. I know I'd buy more.

You need to ask the staff at your library. Each library has several options for Overdrive products. They can purchase 1. only audiobooks 2. only videos 3. only e-books or all of the above. Your library may expand on their Overdrive subscription if enough people are interested in using the e-book capability. There are other subscription services available for libraries, but Overdrive is by far the most popular. Hopefully this will work out for you.

I love Overdrive! I just renewed my NY Public Library card. I went through their list of 551 e-pub fiction books and dropped a bunch into my wish list. When I'm ready I'll start checking them out. Now that I've done the initial pass I'll just go back every week or so and check what's new.
Life is good!

I'm able to check books out using OverDrive and put them on my nook, but the formatting is sometimes wonky. Any idea if that's fixable?
For example, in a recent choice, when I got to a new chapter, the series of pages went like this:
(1) 1st text page for the chapter
(2) Title page for the chapter
(3) Blank page
(4) 2nd text page.
Not life ending, but kind of annoying.

I haven't seen that at all. Have you tried re-downloading the book? You should be able to do that as many times as you want during the checkout period.

@smcsk8: If it's a pdf format, it'll be wonky. I've checked out a couple of books in pdf format because that's the only format that the HCPL had in a particular book. Whenever possible, check out EPUB formatted books.

They were ePubs. The one I'm reading now isn't wonky, so maybe it was just those 2. I don't mind the occasional blank page or one line page, but having it every chapter meant I was pushing those next page buttons A LOT! My library only has ePubs and Mobipockets (which nook doesn't support right?).

No the nook does not support Mobipockets however I believe you can convert this format to ePub using the free software calibre!

Calibre cannot convert anything with DRM and all those will have it, so the answer is no.

I just checked out an e-book from NY library. I can see it on Adobe Digital Editions under borrowed. I can also see my nook there. When I try to drag the book into the nook, I get an error message - "no permission to copy..." Any ideas why?

I recently downloaded my first book from overdrive. I belong to a very small town library, but their library system is linked up to a multitude of other libraries. I had an amazing selection from the Overdrive site. My nook is new so I did have to find instructions (on this site!) for putting it on the nook, but I just finished reading the book, Breathless, by Dean Koontz. If you go to the overdrive site, you can look up your library and then enter your library card number.
