Re: Got Nook? Try Overdrive Library

When you say to use the same user name & password for ADE as B&N, are you talking about their website, or your Nook seriel #?

I don't have a Nook yet but have the PC version and the Droid version! Our library has had the audiobooks and Overdrive for quite awhile and just came out with the ebooks TODAY! I just got my husband set up with downloading an ebook tonight (which he loved, by the way!) and I downloaded one I've been wanting to finish reading that I had started reading the paperback but had to return!

So far we're both reading on the ADE, but I'd like to get them transferred to the Nook for PC so I can at least read on my phone (until we get Nooks)!

There's no need to have the Adobe email address and password be the same as B&N. They're two unrelated things, except if you're using NOOKstudy which seems to make the silly assumption that they're the same.

If you read the "sharing" link in my signature, you'll see that I recommend that each family member have his or her own B&N account, but that everyone shares an Adobe account. Obviously (?), this means that no more than one family member could have a B&N account with the same email address as on the Adobe account.

Re: Got Nook? Try Overdrive Library

Coincidently, I got a notice yesterday from my public library that they are now offering e-books.  So, of course I immediately tried to check out two books, one on my laptop and one on my nook. The laptop was unable to open the book and the nook informed me that this book is incompatible.  According to the library's email, kindle is not compatible, nook is. I am waiting for the library to open so I can call them for help.  Will let you know how I make out.

Can you use more than 1 Adobe account on the same Nook (or color)?

No, each device can only be authorized to one account at a time.

On NOOK, at least, you could save off your .adobe-digital-editions and Digital Editions folders onto a computer, delete them from NOOK, and authorize NOOK with a different account, then save off the .adobe-digital-editions and Digital Editions folders for that account. By swapping which pair of folders you've got on your NOOK, you can change which account it's authorized for.

Sounds like a pain in the backside to me, though. :smileytongue:

Did you download and install ADE.  If your library is using Overdrive, when you download the file it is not the actual ebook, it is a .acsm file which contains a link to a server.  You have to have ADE installed and when you click on that file it will open ADE, go to the server and then download the actual book.  To get the book to the Nook you must do it from within ADE, not using Windows Explorer.  Wondering if that is the issue.

Re: Got Nook? Try Overdrive Library

I just purchased a NookColor and it already had ADE loaded onto it.

I also downloaded eBooks from my local library.

I can see the books on my NookColor, but I get a message to

enter my name and the credit card used to purchase the book.

Well, I didn't purchase the library book.

Now I'm wondering if this is a security devise B&N added to this version

so readers can not read library books?

So far, I'm unable to find the answer.

My library is unaware of this situtaion.

Would a B&N moderator please comment / explain the use of

DRM from other sources on Nook eReaders?

Thanks!

Re: Got Nook? Try Overdrive Library

You have to download library books to your COMPUTER with ADE installed.

Don't save them, open them.

Connect your NOOKColor to your computer.

When it mounts in ADE, drag the library books to the NOOK drive that you see as a shelf in ADE.

Eject NOOK from your computer.

In NOOK you tap "Check for New Content" and they appear in the my documents folder.  I don't exactly know what you do to see them on NOOKColor, but I do know that library books work on it because I've seen others discuss reading library books on NOOKColor.

Re: Got Nook? Try Overdrive Library

When we set up ADE, it would NOT take a password from us, said it was "invalid". It let me and my husband set up the software without a password and download an ebook from the library. We each bought a nook last night. I was able to transfer a library book to the nook (with a lot of effort) and can read it on there. Now I'm trying to help my husband get his library book from his laptop onto his nook and it insists he put a password in and it won't let us transfer the book to his nook.

HELP!

What it insists he put in a password, the Nook or ADE?  And when?  Does ADE recognize and see his Nook?

The only time I recall having to enter a password was when I set up my Adobe account on the website.  I don't ever recall having to enter a password directly in ADE.

Re: Got Nook? Try Overdrive Library

I was confused about this process also, so I asked my local library.

Individuals do not subscribe to Overdrive.Com.

Local libraries subscribe to Overdrive.Com.

If a library patron wants an eBook, but the library does not have it, the library

would purchase it from Overdrive.Com.  The library then makes it available

to their patrons.

And?  (That's explained in the third response to the initial post, by the original poster.)

I'm not sure I understand any more.

Re: Got Nook? Try Overdrive Library

I understand - I've been listening to audio books for a long time. I had to download Overdrive software to download the audiobooks, and then it lets me transfer those to my ipod.

What I'm talking about is Adobe Digital Editions software, which is how my library lets me get the ebooks to my pc, and then to my nook.

Re: Got Nook? Try Overdrive Library

I use overdrive with no problem.  It does take Adobe Digital Editions sometimes to get the book.

The book comes into ADE and when you hook up the nook, ADE recognizes it.  Then you drag/drop the new borrowed book into nook and it is there. Very simple.

Re: Got Nook? Try Overdrive Library

MY library uses Overdrive for audiobooks, and ADE for ebooks. Yes, I understand patrons do not purchase them, the library does. I did get the books to transfer to the nook.

Re: Got Nook? Try Overdrive Library

I have a Nook Color and have yet to buy a book.  I borrow all books from the library, using Overdrive.  it's fairly easy and quick.  The one drawback on the Nook Color is that the digital edition book shows up in "My Files", as opposed to the Library shelf or even your home page.

Re: Got Nook? Try Overdrive Library

Just got my NookColor yesterday and was eager to try this. But turns out my library card expired and I owe them $8 from some books I took out back in 2009. :smileysad:

Going to drop by, pay up and renew so I can use the service. I'm in Ohio and and it looks like the Overdrive service is actually run by the state instead of the local library. Eager to see what they have.

Re: Got Nook? Try Overdrive Library

Hello, I plan to buy a Nook.  Can anyone tell me a model that be able to play audio books? whether I purchase the audio books late or from my local public library.  Thanks so much, Shelly

Re: Got Nook? Try Overdrive Library

I do not know about the nook color but nook classic will play audio books. I download them in to overdrive software (free download program)  and transfer(usb) to my nook. Only two drawn backs, nook only plays mp3 s and most of the libraries books are wav s and I had to use headphones to listen in my busy household.

It took about 30 minutes to transfer the files to my computer and I only put two sections at a time onto my nook.

Not sure if you can convert the others to mp3 because they are protected library copies, if any of the tech savvy users here know I would like to know that.

Re: Got Nook? Try Overdrive Library

Thank you, geatdanemomDT. I would love to know that as well.  I am trying to decide if I should buy Nook or Kindle since Kindle has the "Text to Speech" feature.  But I also like Nook's "Access to Local library" feature if it can download audio book from library.
