Idea for next software update on the Nook

The only real issue I have with the Nook is that whenever I want to GOTO a different section in the book I'm reading and I'm scrolling it always thinks I've selected something.

There should be a longer time required to have it open something.

Maybe a 2 second hold on the spot to open it.

It slows things down to have 3 different chapters open while trying to get to a fourth one.

Other ideas are the obvious WORD *.doc support and a zoom function for PDFs.  It would also be nice to be able to clear the Furthest read setting for a book.

Also, adding cover browsing for documents loaded from PC.

I have really enjoyed using it to read and the prices for books are just about right.

Keep up the good work

@GP10Ellison,

Thank you for your suggestions.  We do read every post here and are always looking to further the reading experience for our customers in a positive manner.

If you are interested, I have attached a video on navigation with your nook:

FYI...It is the fourth video on the bottom.

Re: Idea for next software update on the Nook

I have a request for a new feature on the Nook and the B&N eBook store.

For books published by companies using the "agency model" pricing scheme, could you put, right next to their dictated price, the price that you would sell the book for in a free market?

And please change the "button" for buying books from such publishers to this:

Thank you for considering my suggestion!

Don't buy from Random House, Macmillan, or Penguin until the agency model is COMPLETELY dead.

Re: Idea for next software update on the Nook

In addition to cover browsing for documents loaded from a PC, it would be really helpful to enhance sorting for these documents by providing more options or by imitating the author sorting layout available for Barnes and Noble books. I have a lot of documents by the same author, so anything to better organize these would be a great improvement.

Also, for those of us that are developing extensive libraries on our nooks, a search function for books would be wonderful! I have pages and pages worth of books, and the only way to get to the one I want is to scroll through all the preceding pages. It would be great if I could just tap into a search and type in the title or author that I'm looking for, and go from there. Again, this option is available for B&N library, but not for My Documents. I tend to jump back and forth between multiple books, so something like this, or even a way to view most recently read books (in addition to the "now reading"), would be SO helpful!

I'm loving my nook! Keep up the great work! :-)

Re: Idea for next software update on the Nook

In addition to what @the_write_stuff requested, another thing that would make life much easier would be to have the ability to mark books as read in the My Documents area (or archived)? Something to get them out of the way until I can remove them when I'm able to sync with my computer again? I've found that I have to read everything in alphabetical order, otherwise I have to open each book to see if I've already read it (since I can't view the covers in the bottom area like you can from the other area).

Overall I'm very happy with my Nook, but the majority of the books that I read are available at B&N after they are from the publisher and they are also more expensive from B&N. This means I mainly use the My Documents area and dealing with the lack of any sort of organizational tools in there is driving me nuts. The ability to mark something read (or to archive or delete) would be great! Letting me create a folder type of structure to keep different types of books separate from each other would be over the top! If I could move items around, that could solve all issues... A Read folder and I could move the books there as soon as I've finished them.

I'm hoping that new functionality will appear over time and will make me feel a little less like a second class citizen because I mainly use the My Documents area.

Re: Idea for next software update on the Nook

I think a "Bookshelf" feature for the library would be great.  I use my Nook for research as part of different classes I am taking.  We have the ability to organize the documents in the file system, now if we could just access them under that same organization it would make things tremendously easier.

A second recommendation... how about a "Notes" page.  Just a page where we can use the keyboard to jot down some notes that are not necessarily tied to an eBook.

Third recommendation... the ability to add highlights and notes straight to a PDF or ePub would be much more convienient than the conversion to PDB that I presently have to do.  The conversion frequently distorts the file and makes it harder to read than the native format.

Re: Idea for next software update on the Nook

I have a software update idea as well and this is to be able to make a book as having been read.  As my library list gets longer and longer, it would be helpful to just scroll down the list and see which books I have downloaded but not yet read.

For books bought through B&N you can already see this.  All books downloaded are marked as "New" until they're opened.

Re: Idea for next software update on the Nook

With B&N books I archive them after I read them so I don't see them in the list.  It's easy enough to "view archived books" when I want to review the titles.

I do with I could do that with the "my documents" folder though.

Re: Idea for next software update on the Nook

Personally, the best idea that I could come up with for the next software update would be the following:

1.  Offer the ability to turn off the Cell connection and only leave WIFI turned on (separate the features)

2.  Allow Reading RSS over WIFI or have some way for us to be able to send files to our Nook via WIFI, basically a Personal Sync of a file.  Today, I create an ePub file containting RSS downloaded information daily via Calibre, but I only put updates on my nook when I connect to my computer, which isn't that often.  If I could send it over wifi, that would be the greatest!

Is there any word as to the date of the next software update?

Re: Idea for next software update on the Nook

@sc0rnd1,

There is an upcoming nook update that will continue to improve nook performance to provide enhanced overall reading experience and in-store connectivity for nook customers to enjoy exclusive content and promotions in Barnes & Noble stores.

The date has not been confirmed but we are looking at probably mid-April.

Re: Idea for next software update on the Nook

I have mentioned in other forums that the dictionary word lookup needs to be improved. The most important goal is to speed up the word navigation (and make it more efficient). I believe a solution could be a sort of small circle on the touch screen where I can slide my finger up-down-right-left to place the cursor over a word any place of the page.

If the navigation system for word lookup is left as it is now (ver 1.2), it has to be sped up and allowed to start the look up not only from the fist word, but at the end and even in the middle of the page.

Related to this, I also found a bug, I don´t know if it was reported before. If you look up a word that is at the end of a paragraph, the cursor will mark both the end word and the following paragraph beginning word. The look up will then look for an incorrect word in the dictionary. For example in the first paragraph of this message if I want to know the meaning of the last word "page", the cursor would mark "page.Related" giving a word-not-found error.

Re: Idea for next software update on the Nook

Ideas for nook:

  1. Search selected words in Wikipedia - like you can on the Kindle
  2. If you try to search the plural of a term, take "supposed," for example, you can't get the definition because it is plural, while you can get "suppose," the singular form of the word. Could you make the dictionary also recognize plural?
  3. It's very hard to choose a word to look up in the dictionary.
  4. Make it possible to delete - not archive, delete forever - items from the nook without going onto the B&N website
  5. The nook has this issue with freezing while you are reading a book, requiring a restart. Please fix.
  6. Let users organize books into folders that you can name and rename.
  7. Virtual button such that, wherever you are in the navigation screen, the touch screen will turn off and the e-ink will go to the most recent page of the Reading Now
  8. Virtual button to manually turn off touch screen, rather than a turnoff timer
  9. Whenever I reread a book, I don't read it from the beginning, cover to cover. I flip to a random page, start reading, flip to another random page, start reading, etc. Possibly a "Flip to random page choice?"
  10. Faster boot up and boot down
  11. Flipping page by swiping the touchscreen is more convenient than pressing the buttons, ecspecially if you are doing something else while reading, but swiping finger usually makes slower page turns than pressing the button. Please fix.
  12. This is a very well mature feature, and I would be fine if you left it as such, but the cover flow feature could be a bit snappier.
  13. When you are reading while listening to music, and you put nook to sleep, music keeps playing. I waste battery playing the music so I can listen to it while I read. Would be convenient if you could choose to have music pause when the nook goes to sleep, and play again when nook is woken up.
  14. Waking up the touch screen by pressing the "n" is slow
  15. Putting nook to sleep and waking it up from sleep is slow
  16. I liked the Alice in Wonderland screensavers. Might be nice if there were screensavers for other movies based on books. Cough, cough, Disney's A Christmas Carol, cough, cough.
  17. I don't know if this is possible, but if you could put a few more authors on the Authors screensaver. Where is Dickens, Tolstoy, Voltaire, etc?
  18. All of the more affordable covers for the nook, excluding two, are made of polyeurythrene, cotton, or synthetic leather. Just pointing it out. Might be nice to have a few more real leather covers for the nook
  19. Amazon has this feature where you can go to their website, find a book, and if it isn't on the kindle, you can press a button to request the publisher to release it for the kindle. Similar thing for the nook would be nice.
  20. This is probably very little in your control, but it would definitely be good if this was fixed. Cnet's review of the nook is that of the 10x slower version 1.1 nook. All those disparaging remarks almost made me buy a kindle instead. If possible, could you request that they update their review?
  21. One last thing - I had no clue where to post these suggestions for the nook until about two minutes ago. Would be nice if you said in big letters on the nook page "Suggestions Here!"

Well, hopefully my ideas are a bit helpful.

Just an idea: Could you make a way to complain to B&N about badly formatted eBooks?

Re: Idea for next software update on the Nook

I notice a number of people are asking for a way to delete books permanently from the nook.

I would just like to vote against this feature.

I feel the ability to archive from the nook and then delete permanently from the website is adequate.

I would hate to lose a $12 (or more) eBook permanently due to a fat finger mistake.

Re: Idea for next software update on the Nook

I would like to see an RSS feed option on the Nook.  I would really appreciate being able to read blogs and news feeds on the e-ink screen.

It would also be great if the highlight/note/lookup word features were more usable-- as it is each of these tasks takes so long that the features might as well not exist.  I know that looking up words and highlighting, etc. is a lot smoother and faster on the Kindle.

Otherwise, I am quite happy with the device.

Larry:  While I think that's adequate for the My B&N library books, it's not currently an option for sideloaded content.  I personally sideload a LOT of temporary stuff - calibre news content, articles that I've converted myself that I want to read, and I would LOVE some way to delete this stuff from the nook once it's been read.  Even if they can't go that far, someway to mark this stuff as read so that, when I plug my nook in at the end of the day, I've kept track of what I can delete.

Re: Idea for next software update on the Nook

I definitely agree with the request to be able to delete items from the "My Documents" section.  I, too, sideload news content that could be deleted after reading, making it a smaller list.

Folders showing in the interface of "My Documents" would also be a nifty update!

I can't find a way to make music loop. Music looping would definitely be good to add to the next software update
