Re: Is Nook for iPad Gone?

The points many make (Ya_Ya does so well) are that Apple historically was the pro-consumer alternative to the monopolistic Microsoft. This created their devoted user base. They in the persona of Steve Jobs have become that which their stalwart devotees most abhorred. Their recent activities have all been anti-consumer, now that their presence and market share have been solidified. Yes, a company should make money, but don't pretend it is all about creating the best user experience. Lawsuits, Agency model, anti-competition, these are all part of the same poison that Apple is now dispensing. Jobs sits back while other retailers or their proxies must explain ebook pricing-Apple has no explaining to do. Apps are greatly changed so now other retailers must explain why they don't work so well. They sue over ridiculous patent claims because they don't want other companies to create better products while they limit theirs purposely. They are doing what MS tried to do, stifle competition rather than compete.

The Nook for iPad app has been updated. Downloads appear to be faster now.

A very nice update, all in all.  We lost the user customizable themes, but got excellent page formatting and font sizes.  And it is much faster.:smileyhappy:

Just arrived here cuz I am about to purchase a Nook STR due to my current reader dying, so haven't been around for what I am sure are many previous discussions on that subject.

Glad you're here and that you just jumped in!

We've all got buttons, and Voldemort, :smileywink:, is one of mine.  I grew up on Apple, back to my first Apple IIe in the 80s and ending with the aforementioned emac and iPods.  I used to be a big fan, because things just worked.  But the recent anticompetitive moves have made me a former fan, and Apple has quickly joined Walmart & Amazon on my no-shop (or only shop if stuck in the middle of nowhere with no other alternative) list.  And it makes me sad because I have so many fond memories including Apple.

Welcome, and I hope you love your N2E as much as I love my N1E...

Re: Is Nook for iPad Gone?

I have become so "anti-Apple" in the last few years that I can't even begin to explain it.  I had an iPhone and got rid of it to go to Android (which I like a lot more).  I bought a tablet and never even considered an iPad although that apparently makes me a heretic.

I do have the Nook app on my Android phone as well as my Samsung Galaxy 10.1 tablet.  Honestly I've never used it in either one of them although it's there.  I have my Nook 2nd edition and that's what I read on.  I don't understand the uproar of people with iPads complaining.  I do't need animated books.  I need the closest approximation of DTB's that I can find in electronic form.

For B&N to pay an additional 30% in addition to the publishers dictating pricing to begin with is absurd.  I'm done for now.  Back to lurk mode.

Agreed! Apple may not be for everyone but for me it "just works". If my refrigerator was as dependable as most PC computers running Windows I'd starve.

I read "books" on my nook N2E and Grapic Novels on my iPad. I have the Nook iPad app because it's free and "I can" and the newest version works fine.

It should be pointed out that the reason MAC OSX is so stable is exactly why some people don't like it - Apple oversees and controls what goes on its products and makes sure it runs right - Microsoft doesn't and you see what happens. I've sen people spend hours just trying to get a printer to work on one computer.

I, on the other hand, can print to my wireless printer from my iPhone, iPad, MacBook Pro laptop, iMac and my wife's MacBook laptop without any effort. Setup took just minutes (literally). Try that on a PC. Also, where do you take a PC to get help? I take my Apple stuff (yes, sometimes I need help with complicated stuff - I'm not an expert) to the Apple store and get courtious service with a smile, a thank you and no charge. Try that with a Dell.

Your choice. I've made mine.

This is my biggest pet peeve ever - when people lump all PCs into the same bucket.

I have owned Dells and TIs (do they even still make PCs?) and IBMs, and yeah, I've had issues.  I have never had an issue with a Vaio.  Ever.  It's all I buy now, and it's all I recommend.  I have no stability issues, no hardware issues, no problems at all.  And with windows 7 the printer issues you've mentioned are obsolete.

My husband is a lifetime mac user who came thisclose to switching to Vaio last summer, but when he calculated the software conversion it was cost prohibitive, so he's got another mac that won't play nice with his iphone, or his older mac.  In our house, if you hear someone screaming in frustration at their computer's refusal to cooperate, it's him, not me.

As far as devices go, I've got the kindle, kobo and B&N apps on my android phone and they all work seemlessly.  I can shop within the apps and do everything else the apps should be able to do.  Yeah, I don't have ibooks, but so what?  There's nothing over there I'd ever want.

Re: Is Nook for iPad Gone?

Not sure what changes have been made.

(1) The B & N store link is still the first icon in my iPad's Nook library;

(2) Tapping that icon still takes me to the B & N home page;

(3) I can still purchase books via that link to the store; and

(4) The purchase downloads into my Nook library.

I just did all of this & it worked perfectly.

Am I missing something here?

Then some how you don't have the updated version. Apple has required all the book stores to remove in app purchases and web links or give Apple 30% on every book sold.

Re: Is Nook for iPad Gone?

Nope. Software, including iTunes, is up to date for the iPad.

Curious.

Click on the Apps icon on your iPad, and then select the Updates option on the bottom right.  You should get a very new-looking Nook for iPad app, modeled after the Nook for Android app.

Oddly, the Nook for iPhone retained some of the old features, such as allowing the user to completely customize the background, type, link, and highligh colors.

Be careful with the delete option in the new iPad version, because it will actually delete the book permanently from your library, as the Android app does.  It warns you first.  Take the warning seriously.

To avoid this, you should only archive books.

Re: Is Nook for iPad Gone?

Thanks. That did it. Oddly enough, though, I haven't been prompted to update the B & N app before now.

Re: Is Nook for iPad Gone?

Thanks for the tips on installing the new B & N app. I must say that I love the speed with which downloads happen. With the old app, I could have lunch, a snack & dinner while waiting for an item to download.
