I read alot of SCI-FI. I was a customer at Fictionwise, until they got rid of MICROPAY accounts. I always liked the SCI-FI mags
( i.e. ANALOG, AZIMOV)
which are not available at B&N website.
So, how about it?
More magazines offered... Scientific American, Hockey News & on & on...
... If knowledge is power, why do I have to keep recharging my ereader ?

There are 48 magazines available for the Kindle.
But only 14 for the Nook.
I thought Barnes was trying to offer a better user experience?
Seems this is an area where they need some serious catchup... ![]()
If I've missed any replies from Barnes sysops or any official list of upcoming magazines, please point me in the right direction.
Some I'd like to see would be Popular Science, and Popular Mechanics, Maybe CondeNast or Cruise-travel magazine, also perhaps Mother Earth.
Those would all be cool.

I would love the SF magazines on the nook. Never really read them (on a monthly basis), just "best-of" collections that came much later.
The science magazines though ... I don't think I'd like to read those on a black and white screen so much. When so much information is available online, the only reason I pick up one of those magazines (SciAm, Discover, NewScientist) is for the brilliantly illustrated articles that are such a pleasure to read. Heck, that's why I actually subscribe to WIRED (only subscription I've ever had).
Is there anyone who reads heavily illustrated books, mags, comics on the nook? I'd love to know how you like it and if things still remain readable.

The ANALOG and AZIMOV's format and page size seems to be a close fit to the available ereaders.
I agree. I'd rather see the color presentation. But, I grew up with B&W TV so it doesn't bother me much. I can always go to my netbook or laptop, if I want to look at the color. That's probably why iPAD sales are through the roof.
I really like Scientific American and love to reference their outstanding graphs, plots, graphics and pictures when I'm trying to comprehend the article's. So, Nook does lack format compatability to present the printed information as the original publishers intended when confronted with a non-book type structure. I found that the Newspaper I read, Wash. Post, is formated fairly well. But, I fear that the content is cut back abit.
I've owed and used ereader devices since Fictionwise started. My first was the Palm with MOBIpocket app. I suspect that the Nook is just a marketing experiment. It's not to much of a step ahead in functionality from other devices previously on the market. At times when I am using it, I feel that it is slightly a step behind. Why reinvent the wheel? The redemptive qualities, however, is the wifi/3G acccess to B&N and their book market. I don't think B&N would sustain much loss if the Nook wass no longer marketed. The offer downloadable applications that work on alot of other devices(i.e iPAD) Their market niche is printed material and they marketed it before the Nook. I'm sure they will survive without it. Sad to say.
The Nook does do what I bought it for..READ BOOKS. I like to use it dispite the minor flaws. Being responsive to the users is going to determine how long it will survive.
MORE MAGAZINES PLEASE!! ![]()

"Is there anyone who reads heavily illustrated books, mags, comics on the nook? I'd love to know how you like it and if things still remain readable."
I have tried with comics and science, computer type books.
Less than stellar I might say.. Problem being no zoom and pan for pdf's. But more than that I think the small format is the biggest hurdle. I recommend anyone having a need for much technical and learning then Ipad or at least a 9" e-reader is required. Real estate is critical for technical type books.

Fictionwise is a Barnes and Noble company, according to their web site.
Please please give us Analog. I would buy a subscription if I could. (I tweeted this to you guys, too).

Gah. I am so with you on this! In fact, I still use Mobipocket (since I went from a Zire 31 to the Centro - still the best device for my grocery store queue
) and the sense of despair when I switch over is palpable. Mobipocket truly had (has) every single feature I could have wished for in a book reader (especially the ability to make on-the-fly booklists, touch highlights and superb annotation support). Reinventing the wheel indeed - unfortunately, they started out with a square wheel and we're waiting for it to become round
. To be fair though, the actual reading part (screen, contrast, text quality) are just so much superior to anything else that I can't really complain - after all, my complaints are all about finding the book. Actually reading it on the nook is a fantastic experience so that's arlight
.

This is what I don't understand.
With applications like Mobipocket, that's been around for years; ereader operating systems that perform well, with all the functions Nook owners are requesting,
such as Rocket ebookor eBOOKwise ETI 2; why, before the device was developed, was no research done on the devices that offered operating features and functionality that make an ereader "user friendly" ??![]()
Hopefully, B&N will offer more magazines!

I've purchased Alfred Hitchcock and Ellery Queen Mystery Magazines from Fictionwise. I believe they're published by the same people that publish Analog.
They format perfectly for the Nook. I would prefer to purchase from here but........

OK,
I know some of you want your favorite magazines delivered and all that but for the time being Analog at least can be sideloaded.
Here are the locations you can get it, not I am not referring anyone to these locations Analog Magazine is.
http://www.analogsf.com/E-Analog.shtml
I'm sure they'd just LOVE to add B&N to this page and since they sell the paper version I'd assume B&N could.
Maybe the moderators should create a thread for magazine suggestions???

Awesome! Thanks a million for this info. I use Fictionwise here and there but never stumbled upon these mags (there's Analog, Asimov's SF and a couple more, not bad at all). With no notable new SF (in my watchlist) on the horizon for a few more months, I may just have to slake my thirst on these =)

This is great! The NOOK GODS have responded swiftly!
I thank them and have displayed a burning candle screensaver to honor their benevolence...
I depart for now, before the Quantum Timelords start messing with my Cesium Masterclock!
Thanks Again to B&N ebooks

I'm so happy I decided to check the boards today. I just ordered Asimov's Science Fiction and will be looking to see what else is available.

Yeah I'm getting ready to cancel my Alfred Hitchcock subscription on Fictionwise, get the credit, and switch the sub to here if it works out financially.
