I suspect that "zoom and pan" for a PDF on a e-ink display would not the best and rather slow going.
It's still better than what we've currently got when working with PDFs with graphics. Sony has had zoom, pan, and landscape view for years. Kindle added it earlier this year. Kobo only has zoom, pan, and landscape for PDFs, no text reflow. NOOK is arguably the worst of the major e-readers for dealing with PDFs.
The PDF zoom, pan, and landscape features almost certainly must be built into Adobe Reader Mobile, given the number of other RM applications doing zoom/pan (including Adobe's own). If so, B&N would just need to create the user interface to work with it.

I love the idea of being able to switch the forward and back buttons since holding it one-handed is off balance, but I think that's rather complicated.
A simple one I'd love is to be able to mark a book as "read". A small icon like the "new," "sample", or "Lend Me" ones currently used could be used. Failing that, a way to show "read 256/400" pages somewhere on the document list or book information pages.

That's already in 1.5.

it'd be cool if they could put in an email ap like outlook or thunderbird that would let me know when i get a new message. the browser doesn't like my provider's webmail pages much. Probably wishful thinking though!
i was disappointed in the shelving system for 1.5 that you can't organise books in a series. I finally gave in and renamed all my books by number ("Pern 23" is very much less pretty!)
i also like the idea of being able to switch a button's function. i'm constantly hitting the left-forward button when i want to go back a page!

Catching Fire (Book 2)
Mockingjay (Book 3)
The Hunger Games (Book 1)

The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets' Nest (Book 3)
The Girl Who Played with Fire (Book 2)
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (Book 1)
... other than that, I'm good.
I know it's time consuming, but if you edit the metadata to change the title to 01-Title, it'll organize it perfectly.
I don't believe you can change metadata on a DRM'd book. Am I mistaken?

You can change the metadata on a DRM'd ePub. That particular file (the one with the opf extension) within the archive is not protected and it's actually a text file so you could open the ePub with a zip program and manually edit the file if you wanted. Or you could import the file into Calibre and change the metadata there and your new data would be written to the nook when you sideloaded it. You can't edit the metadata for a book in the B&N part of the library though. The nook will refuse to open the file there. You have to sideload an ePub that you've modified.

I think two top priorities for 1.6 should be enhanced note-taking and pdf functionality. I was frankly shocked that the note-taking functions weren't enhanced in 1.5, given how easy it would be to create a way to simply output existing notes to a text file. Those two functions, more than anything, would make the existing Nook fully competitive with the Amazon and Sony offerings.

What I'd like to see is an option that would set the Now Reading book cover as the screensaver. So, just like when reading a paper book, when you see it on the coffee table, you see the book's cover. I know, I could manually upload the cover and set it as the screensaver, but that's too much trouble when you read 2-3 books a week.

It has that now, I use it on my wifi at home.

The most important features for me:
1. Email App specialized for Nook.
2. Wiki App specialized for Nook
3. News App specialized for Nook, in which I can add my own RSS source.
4. Search in "My Documents"
That's all. If Nook can do all of this. It's perfect for me.

I love the 1.5 update. In 1.6 I just want improvements to the way the shelves work:
1) Store shelf info in B&N online account so that if NOOK has to be replaced, or a new NOOK is added to the account, it gets all the shelf info.
2) When displaying library on e-ink screen: display a list of shelves and only display the contents of the shelf when it is selected.
3) Treat "unshelved" as a shelf, so I can make unshelved books appear at the top of a list instead of the end.
4) Allow custom sorting of titles within a shelf.
Also it would be nice if:
5) Allow selection of "current cover" as screensaver.
6) Wrap-around of library scrolling: When on the last page of the library display and next page is pressed go to the first page. When on the first page and previous page is pressed go to the last page.

2c more ....
- support for more formats (plain text, html, MS Word etc)
- better pdf support (zoom & pan)
- support landscape view in all formats
- allow page forward/back buttons to be reversed
- set current book cover as screensaver
- collapse shelves (ie show only shelf name, not its contents)
Actually, on shelves, I like the way book organization works on the pocketbook 360 - simply honor the folders on sideloaded content so you can organize however you want.
What would be really nice, and make me feel all warm & fuzzy about BN, would be a place on their website where registered nook owners could submit requests and vote on existing requests .... and have that paid attention to!
Final comment. I want BN to concentrate on making the nook a better ereader. Games & web browsing are a distant 2nd & 3rd to this.

Thanks for 1.5 - shelves are a wonderful improvement. They could use a bit of work.
1) The Unshelved "shelf" needs to be able to be moved to the front. When you get a new book it will be unshelved. That means that you now need to go to the back of the list to organize it!
2) It would be nice to be able to put a book on a shelf while reading it. Sometimes I don't really know how I am to classify something until I get into it. How about accessing shelfs from the "preferences" menu or something similar.
3) I also agree that there should be a way to collapse all the shelves so only the name shows until you select it.
Thank you also for the passwords. I do feel that there is still a security mistake here. The account purchase password was handled perfectly. The use password seems a like it could be a problem. It appears from reading the manual that if you forget your use password, you will be forced to re-initialize your Nook. However, there is no security to setting the password if it is not already set. What if someone else gets access and sets one for you, locking you out. I am not in a situation where that might happen, but I know others are. Surely you could have used the account password as security to setting a use password. Of course you could just set one to prevent problems, but it seems such a bother if you just don't want anyone else to set one.
Once again, thanks for 1.5 and keep up the improvements.

Needs "cover view" for side loaded items. Every legit side-loaded book usually has some graphic as its first page, representing the book.
Better sorting. Not just reorganizing the list, but true folders.
A tool for combining pdfs
Overall better support for sideloaded docs than just shelves.

I usually have my Nook in airplane mode. When I want to shop or access "the daily", one has to go to the wifi menu to turn off airplane mode and turn on wifi.
Is it possible to include that functionality in the "shop" and "the daily" menus? It would be much more convenient.
Thanks!

The ability to designate the books you have read. Make it as simple as a strikethrough, for example, "Dead Witch Walking". Otherwise 1.5 is briliant.

If you tap shop while the device is in airplane mode, it will tell you it is in airplane mode and ask if you want to turn it off. Tap Ok on the touch screen. Same thing happens if you are in the B&N library and you tap check for new content.

What I do is change the view to Hide Shelves and Sort By Most Recent, that puts the most recently purchased/read books to the top. I shelve the book and then change the view back. I'd rather have the unshelved books at the end since I want the reading now and to be read books at the top most of the time. Unfortunately you can't please everyone no matter what you do.![]()

They need to allow more than two lines for a book. I've got some books that have the series name & sequence number after the title & they're truncated (& useless as is.) Title on one line, series title & number on the next & author on the third; elementary programming problem. A little more difficult in "My Documents". If we can't do it manually then maybe they could take the metadata from Calibre or something. Manually editing the title to put a sequence number at the start could work but it would screw up the alpha sort (I haven't tried this with the shelves yet.) The only thing left would be putting them at the end, awkward but doable.
And we definitely need to be able to make subfolders, at least one level (author shelf, then series shelf under that.) It would also be nice for a little app on the computer to do all this stuff instead of swiping & tapping all around the NOOK.
Other than that, Kudos for v1.5.
