wordsandmelodies wrote:Just a note -- it ISN'T the OED. I'm a word nerd, and an online subscription to the Oxford English Dictionary online, which I would LOVE to have, costs almost $300 a year. If you need/want it in print, it's 20 volumes and costs nearly $1,000. What the Sony has is the second edition of the New Oxford AMERICAN Dictionary. You can purchase the hard copy (1 book) for $60, and I'm not quite sure if it's available online.
For about a minute, I was incredibly excited by the idea of an ereader using the OED. Then I figured it couldn't be right.
Right, I've since confirmed that is indeed the NEW Oxford American Dictionary. Still not too shabby. And I think you can actually use others also. I saw a screenshot somewhere that showed a few of them...

I got a look at one of the new Sony readers the other day, and I still prefer my Nook. The new Pearl screen does have better contrast, but the screen is still slightly blurrier than the Nook - the letters are darker, the screen is whiter, but the letters just aren't quite as sharp. Having the touchscreen might be nice, but it's not enough of a draw for me to give up the things my Nook has that the Sony doesn't (no wi-fi or 3G unless you get the huge one, no ability to change fonts, no in-store extras, no software updates to fix problems and add new features, no ability to drag and drop books from the computer instead of using software...). Especially at a higher price than the Nook!
Sony does make good readers, though; I owned one before my Nook, and if Barnes and Noble were to (heaven forbid) stop selling the Nook, my next reader would probably be a Sony. But while the Nook is available, that's what I'm sticking with ![]()
I've been hoping for a Nook 2 though, and am disappointed that at this point it doesn't look like one is going to be available for the holiday season. Not that there's anything wrong with my Nook, but I'd like to see a Nook with the new Pearl screen and better battery life, and I want to see Barnes and Noble's answer to the Kindle 3 (since the Nook had solutions to a lot of the issues people had with the Kindle 2).

Well, if they don't come out with a nook 2, they at least need to hit that $99 price point and start carrying other eReaders in store

Why?
Because that is the price point of last years technology in eReaders. I can go to Borders and shop for 3-4 eReaders all under the price of the Nook and Borders has had several markdowns to 99. I know libretech and a few others will have 99 as their price point.
B&N isn't doing that well.. to think they don't have to compete with a tech gadget release cycle is asinine and if they don't want to compete they need to move over and give customers choice.

Sorry, I have to disagree about the Sony being blurrier. Maybe if you're talking about the 600, but not the new 650. In the interest of honesty, I have to say that, in my opinion, it's even easier on the eyes than the Nook. And it has six adjustable fonts - along with Two English language and 10 translation dictionaries, double-tap word lookups, note-taking, etc. And it's great that you can buy your ebooks from just about anywhere except B&N and Amazon and have no compatibility issues. It is too bad that there is no wireless, but this isn't as big a deal to me as some others. Mainly it's a nice thing to have if I'm out and about and suddenly decide I want to buy an ebook, so definitely good to have while travelling. I do most of my reading at home, though, and so as long as I have a computer/laptop to connect, I don't mind having to connect the ereader. I do this far more with my Nook than I buy stuff wirelessly.
As for Nook 2... I know that some people would miss it, but I'd really like to see the lcd screen go bye-bye. This would do wonders for battery-life! And not having to deal with the flaky screen switches when you choose one option but get another, that would be nice. Actually, the best of both worlds would be to have an lcd but be able to turn it completely off, with manual buttons for navigating directories and doing everything else. Mainly the lcd would be just an option to shop B&N online and one or two other things.

Maybe if you already have a nook I can see you would not be interested in a Sony reader, BUT if you don't have an e reader at all.....no wi-fi or 3G does not bother me, surely I could load enough books on to get me through if I was going somewhere. I do understand however, it would be nice if you travel, just not a big deal to me personally. No software updates to add new features?? I don't see B&N doing such a great job with this anyway. I am disappointed (prematurely I know) with the sounds of the new update and the Sony 650 is looking better all the time. Talk about organization!! Worth the money to me. I think a lot of people would purchase a more expensive nook if it had the important features they wanted. I love the idea of the nook, I haven't decided for sure, but unless they aren't telling us something, I lean toward Sony.

For the person interested in the dictionaries that come with the Sony 650:

Oh, that would be fabulous. I wonder if the whole thing is available. Could one browse it? If so, you would have access to the whole OED PLUS an ereader for less than the cost of a yearly subscription. That seems too good to be true. I think I should look into this.

I don't think that's the OED.
I'm pretty sure that that is a new dictionary collected in the 1990s, based on current usage of words. I'm pretty sure it isn't based on the OED, either. IIRC, it's abbreviated NODE.

Right, from Wiki:
The Oxford Dictionary of English (formerly The New Oxford Dictionary of English, often abbreviated to NODE) is a single-volume English language dictionary first published in 1998 by Oxford University Press. This dictionary is not based on the Oxford English Dictionary and should not be mistaken for a new or updated version of the OED. It is a completely new dictionary which strives to represent as faithfully as possible the current usage of English words.
The 2005 edition contains 355,000 words, phrases, and definitions, including biographical references. A 3rd edition was published in August 2010, with some new definitions (such as vuvuzela). It is at present the largest single-volume English-language dictionary published by Oxford.

Curses, foiled again! It's okay. One of these days I'll win the lotto, become filthy rich, and get a subscription to the OED. Any day now...
