I'm surprised no one is talking about this here (though I figure that the opinions here would be the same as on the kindle boards, still wanting to take the nook users' temperatures :-)) But, yes, Random House has decided to adopt the Agency Model starting tomorrow. I'm wondering if Random House jumping into the agency model means that it will be extended come 4/1 amongst the other agency publishers.
http://www.randomhouse.biz/media/pdfs/RHInc-Ebook-
“Random House, Inc. is adopting the agency model for e‐book sales in the United States
effective March 1, 2011. Going forward, Random House will set consumer prices for the ebooks
we publish, and we will provide retailers with a commission for each sale. There are
no changes to our terms of sale for physical books.
“The agency model guarantees a higher margin for retailers than did our previous sales
terms. We are making this change both as an investment in the successful digital transition
of our existing partners and in order to give us the opportunity to forge new retail
relationships.
“We are looking forward to continuing to work with all our retail partners – both digital and
physical ‐‐ on our joint mission to connect our authors with as many readers as possible, in
whatever format they prefer.”
Now I'm wondering if I need to buy The Girl who Kicked the Hornet's Nest now, while the price is $8.93 (it's a Random House imprint, right?) even though I haven't read the first two yet...

Thanks for the heads-up. That's some really short notice!
If you want Hornet's Nest at that price, get it now.

THis is where I'm at. I have the first two which I haven't read...should I jump on the third? What if I don't even life the first two? Ha ha, decisions decisions (though I will probably buy it).

That's the definition of "low risk".
If you don't like them, you may not be the only person in the world who doesn't, but you'll have a tough time finding the other one.

Strange timing, though.

I just took a few minutes from the Coldplay concert that I'm watching in 60 inches of HD splendor to write to Stuart Appelbaum, the flack identified as contact on the Random House press release, to tell him how much I think their decision SUCKS!!!!!
A huge sacrifice, I know, but desperate times call for desperate measures. ![]()

So, does this mean that the rest won't be bowing out of the Agency Model on 4/1/11, or is this a response to the Apple debacle pulling the apps from the iPad? Is this because once everyone else's apps are pulled the only way to reach the iPad set will be through iBooks and Random House thinks the iPad set is a big enough market to need to fold? Or has it been so good for the other five that six had to join, too?

I appreciate the heads-up. I just reviewed my borrowed-from-the-library list to check for Random House titles I liked enough to own. I bought them (there were two). If those two ebooks go to list price tomorrow, buying them tonight saved me over $20.00.
At times like this, I have real difficulty wrestling with my usual "hey, the publishers have a right to make money, too" stance. Defending shortsightedness is so tiring! ![]()

I didn't see this listing until this morning. Unfortunately, it's too late. I just checked my eBook wishlist, and a lot of the books on that list have gone up in price. For example, books that were in the $5 to $6 range are now $7.99. Books that were in the $7 to $8 range are now $9.99. I still have plenty of unread books on my Nook; I'm glad I bought them at a faster rate than I can read them while the prices were still reasonable. Most of the books on my list are "older" ones. I can't see paying top dollar for a digital book when it's not newly released or even just a year old. I won't be purchasing any new ones for a while - unless they go on special.

The same questions I have.
My guess is that it is related to Apple's killing of the other e-reader apps. iBookstore only carries Agency Model titles, so if Random House wants to keep being available on iPad/iPhone/iPod, they'll need to toe the Agency Model line.
As for why now instead of June: everyone is expecting that tomorrow, Apple will unveil the iPad 2. Since RH has to make the switch anyway, it might as well switch now and get into iBookstore before iPad 2 hits the shelves.
And yeah, I think this is a huge signal that the Agency Model is not only going to continue beyond April 1, but will probably spread throughout the rest of the e-book publishing industry. The walls have been breached, and the castle is lost.
Them's my guesses. ![]()

Of the RH titles on my wishlist, they pretty much stayed the same or only went up $1. Oddly, The Vampire Lestat (Vampire Chronicles Series #2) actually dropped $2. Go figure.

@ABthree:
Actually, BearLion won't have to look far for someone else who didn't like the first of the trilogy enough to even consider reading the second and third installments. I'm glad I checked out the first one from the library instead of spending even $5 for it on my NOOK.

I didn't like the 1st one either (although I did spend the $5 on it). BearLion -if you like the 1st 2 - borrow the 3rd from the library. Get on a hold list now & you might get it by the time you first 2).

I thought I couldn't get through #1 because I'd seen the movies first - because EVERYONE loves them. Maybe I'm just in the (weird) minority who doesn't. ![]()

I actually enjoyed the first one but I had to read 1/2 the book to get to that point.

I just hope that this policy that goes into effect today will be on the positive side.
