Sold a Nook in the US, live in Australia. It wont work. :-(

so, i researched and purchased a nook Colour in Barnes and Noble in Honolulu a few weeks ago.

The saleswoman assured me it would work with a little tweaking.

She gave me a paper of instructions for upgrading the software, using a US billing address, covering the iSP via Hotspot Shield and then it states'

'The US address wont affect your credit card - it just makes it look like youre downloading from within the US.

it seems the B&N site DOES recognise an Australian credit card, as it wont accept the transaction at all.

i tried using the software Calibre which worked on an already downloaded book. But anything purchased from Amazon needs a dRM remover and as this is for my 84yr old father - it's all too hard to do.

I think B&N has misrepresented their product and i'm prettty angry.  I'm awaiting a reply from them but what else can i do i wonder?

geertm can probably help you with the international part of your problem, but I thought I would respond to your Amazon problem in case other people weren't aware.  Amazon (and Apple iBooks) use there own special DRM that no one else can use.  B&N also uses DRM, but the Nooks will read not only B&N DRMed eBooks but also ebooks purchased from other places that use ADE DRM like Sony, Google or Kobo, you simply have to sideload those purchases.  In order to read Amazon or iBooks, you'd need to download their apps, which would require you to root your nook or purchase a bootable SD card with something like Android for Nook (AFN) or Nook to Android (N2A) on it.

I don't know if the store employee who sold you your Nook was necessarily misrepresenting anything or if you two were possibly just not communicating clearly.  You do need a US based credit card and address.  But, once you have those things you can download books while being outside the US.
