Since 1997, you’ve been coming to BarnesandNoble.com to discuss everything from Stephen King to writing to Harry Potter. You’ve made our site more than a place to discover your next book: you’ve made it a community. But like all things internet, BN.com is growing and changing. We've said goodbye to our community message boards—but that doesn’t mean we won’t still be a place for adventurous readers to connect and discover.

Now, you can explore the most exciting new titles (and remember the classics) at the Barnes & Noble Book Blog. Check out conversations with authors like Jeff VanderMeer and Gary Shteyngart at the B&N Review, and browse write-ups of the best in literary fiction. Come to our Facebook page to weigh in on what it means to be a book nerd. Browse digital deals on the NOOK blog, tweet about books with us,or self-publish your latest novella with NOOK Press. And for those of you looking for support for your NOOK, the NOOK Support Forums will still be here.

We will continue to provide you with books that make you turn pages well past midnight, discover new worlds, and reunite with old friends. And we hope that you’ll continue to tell us how you’re doing, what you’re reading, and what books mean to you.

Sound issues

Love my new Nook color, but I'm having sound issues. The sound was working when I started it up because I watched the tutorials and startup video. Later, I wanted to check out Pandora and couldn't hear anything, so I decided to show my husband the children's book that reads to you and still no sound. I've checked the sound setting and it's on, not on mute, and turned up all the way. I've turned it off to recharge and I'm hoping it will work after the reboot, but just in case, any thoughts on what might be the problem? Merry Christmas!

Re: Sound issues

Sounds like a good opportunity to go to BN and have a Nook specialist look at it. Sounds like you've checked all the likely settings. One thing you may want to try is using a pair of ear buds just to help determine where the issue is.

Re: Sound issues

This is a known issues.  Some Nooks lose sound when it comes out of sleep mode.  Power it down completely.  When you turn it back on, the sound will return.

I was told by support that the issue would be fixed in the next upgrade.  I tend to believe them because I had this same issue on a computer once.  It was a driver problem.  When the driver was updated, the problem was resolved.

I'm going to hold onto mine since everything else works great.  Hopefully they will be true to their word and fix it in the next update.  There are a lot of people having this problem so they have to do something.

Re: Sound issues

I just got my Nookcolor today and I'm having the same sound problem. I tried using earphones and still nothing. When you say that they are going to fix it in the next upgrade, do you mean a whole new device or a download for the one I have. I need to know if I have to return it. I asked for this e-reader above all the others because I thought it had the best features even though it was way over the budget. I can't afford to hold onto something that doesn't work right. Has anybody else found sound troubleshooting in the support area that might help me?

Re: Sound issues

Thanks for the replies. I'm back in business now! I powered my Nookcolor down and let it recharge and when I powered it back on the sound worked perfectly! Try that and see if it works for you.

Re: Sound issues

I've had my NC two days and the sound has stopped 3 times. Powering off/on has fixed it but it is becoming frustrating. I just loaded OS 1.0.1 but I doubt it will have any effect since the description of the upgrade does not mention the sound problem. I do not plan on waiting past my return period for BN to fix the problem. It will be headed back to BN soon if not fixed.

Re: Sound issues

I hope you get the sound issue worked out. I know it's frustrating. How did you get the OS 1.0.1 downloaded to your Nookcolor? I followed the instructions, but wasn't sure which folder to put the zipped file into, so I just dropped it in as it's own file, but it never deployed. I finally just deleted it.

You don't put the zipped file into any folder.  It is meant to be put in the root directory of the NookColor.  Once the file has been copied to the root, eject the NookColor, disconnected the USB cable and the update process should start automatically.

Re: Sound issues

I hate to sound incompetent or slow on the uptake, but I think you're going to have to clarify the root directory for me. Here is what I've done. Once I have the zipped file on my desktop and plugged in the USB cord and it shows Media (F:smileyhappy: that is where I have dragged and dropped the file. The file copies to there and I unplug the USB cord, but nothing happens, even after it goes to sleep. Inside the Media (F:smileyhappy: here are the files that I have: .adobe-digital-e..., .docThumb, B&N Dowlnoads, LOST.DIR, and My Files. Does the zipped file go into one of those or am I trying to put the file in the wrong place totally? Thanks for taking the time to answer my questions.

Re: Sound issues

I swapped my NC with sound issues two days ago and so far, so good - no issues. The BN Nook staff said they had not heard about this sound issue at all (???). If you have the sound problem, I suggest exchanging right away and not waiting for a s/w fix. BN told me the exchange period is extended to 30 days if the unit was purchased during the holidays. Also, I would imagine this problem is covered by the basic one year warranty, but would require sending it in to BN.

Re: Sound issues

Same thing happened to me.  I took it back to B&N and after some convincing that it wasn't my issue but the devices they gave me a new one.  It's been working great.  They also had not heard of any sound issues which surprised me.  If anyone else is having issues with the sound take it back pronto and ask for a new one.  Something went wrong somewhere with the production of some these.

Re: Sound issues

I had the same sound issues with mine.   I would turn on Pandora and by the 3rd or 4th song it would just randomly lose sound.  But I also had issues where it would crash evertime I tried to wake it from sleep mode.  I went back to B&N and had no problems exchanging it for a new one.  The new one is working perfectly no sound issues or freezing.

Re: Sound issues

I have not been able to get any sound from Pandora  at all. I see the graph moving and know the music is playing but no sound at all ..... with or without ear buds. I am trying to decide if I should just return it and get a new one or wait

Re: Sound issues

My $.02 worth - I would replace the unit now. There is no guarantee BN will really fix the problem with software updates and it appears (at least for me) that replacing the unit solves the problem for many people.

Re: Sound issues

Well, I thought mine was fixed, but it's not. Restarting worked for a while, but wasn't a permanent fix. I called the BN where my husband purchased my Nookcolor and, as some of others have posted, they weren't aware of the sound issue, but told me to bring it in to be replaced. I live about an hour away from the store so I told them I'd bring it in later in the week. I've got the gift recipe in the bag and it's ready to go. I just wish they had the book cover in stock that I want, so I could kill two birds with one stone.

Re: Sound issues

In hopes of guiding this to a single consolidated topic for these issues:
