Suggested Improvements For V 1.4

[ Edited ]

I would like to see the following improvements for the next upgrade.

1. Give us the option to hide icons on the main touchscreen.

2. Turn off the n bar when in the using the keypad.

3. Develop a stylus that will work with the touchscreen.

In regards to number 3 - about the stylus,  there are already those available that will work with it.

IIRC, the nook uses "capacitive touch" screen, just like the iPod touch and such, and thus a stylus for use with it, should work with the nook.

This link should take you to a search that provides links to the type of stylus you want/need.

I think the stylus from the Nintendo DSi will work also-found at local walmarts, targets, kmarts, etc.

The music player needs to have a way to sort audio files.  For example:  audio books and Music and then by specific book and album.  Right now everything is mixed together.  If you have a lot of items it is impossible to scroll through them to find a specific item.

I would also like the ability to hide icons on the main screen.

Along with that I would also like the ability to swap page turn buttons by side ( left/right/both ),

create playlists on the media player,

unify the my/BN documents into one place with the option to add folders for organization.

It would be nice if they could partner with Starbucks for the book for an hour, since some of us live an hour away from the nearest B&N store and Starbucks are everywhere.

Other than that keep up the good work!

Collections like Sony has where you can put your books in categories.

The Nintendo DSi uses a resistive touch screen where the nook uses a capacitive touch screen.

A Nintendo stylus will not work with the Nook touchscreen.  As mentioned earlier, the Nook touchscreen is capacitive which senses electrons from the fingertip. A Nintendo stylus with it's plastic tip will only work with a resistive screen.

Kindle also has this option now, it's rolling out in their 2.5 upgrade.

I agree that there should be some way to make some information less public.

Also, for apps, I'd like to see an abc music notation converter made available.

@Frog,

You know the only concern I have with the collections/sorting that amazon is putting out is the worry that B&N will do it, and only let it apply to the B&N purchases and not the side-loaded books.Which would be very annoying to some people who have more than a dozen books or so side-loaded.

Hmmm, now I'm wondering how B&N will do it for B&N purchases, isn't the meta-data locked in thier books, such that we can't change it? And i'm not sure, since i haven't actually tried to bring up a B&N book in calibre, so I'm not sure exactly what meta-data they have stored there already.

So, if we can't change the meta-data on a B&N book, then they'd have to change it, which would imply they'd have to change every book to belong someplace. Unless.... it's a folder situation, where we can move books around? *shrug* I dunno.... we'll see what happens if we ever get it.

Lost me on the abc music notation converter? I just googled it and it's software to turn music into text? (naw that can't be right?) I'm not sure how that will improve the reading experience on a device we're led to believe is an Ebook reader... But anything can happen.

I play Irish flute.  The nook would be a great device to allow me to have access to the notation of tunes I play.   I don't always need sheet music, but it would be helpful in case I can't remember a tune.

Re: Suggested Improvements For V 1.4

I'd like a way to mark an e-book to indicate I've already read it...  We bought quite a few books before going on vacation and it would be nice if I could sort out the ones I'm finished with from the ones I've yet to read.  My husband and I share an account - so I don't want to archive books I'm done with in case he hasn't read it yet.

This is the mistake. You should both have separate B&N accounts. A B&N account is designed for an individual person, to keep his/her various reading devices (NOOK, iPhone, PC, etc.) in sync.

B&N says that Real Soon Now they're going to have the "farthest read point" of each e-book synchronized through the account, and that'll drive you crazy when you're both reading the same e-book at the same time.

I recommend that one of you get his/her own separate B&N account. You can still share e-books. See the link in my signature for information on that.

I want the function at least to rotate the PDF document, that Kindlw2 already has.

More than good to have zoon-in/out additionally.

Re: Suggested Improvements For V 1.4

Personally I've found that I don't use the web browser or the games at all in 1.3. Sure, I played with them when the patch first hit. Since then I do what I bought the nook to do -- read books.

So my suggestion for version 1.4 or even 1.3.1 is to focus on the reading experience. Also work on the stability of the device. Readers want to read. We want minimal or no distractions. We want to lose ourself in the book. I'd even willingly sacrifice both the games and the browser for a nice Cochin font or similar.

I would like to see the price of samples in view in my library rather than select 'buy' to see the price.
