Surf's UP!

Just curious to know how many people are using their Nooks to surf the web?  I tried it once and hated the way it worked, so I haven't used it again.

What about everyone else?

Re: Surf's UP!

I already have a phone that does web surfing (and everything else) pretty well, and a laptop. I used the Nook browser a couple of times just to try it out, and it's nice to have. I personally view my Nook as a dedicated reading device, like my Sony mp3 player is a dedicated music device, and I would rather they focused on just making it the most fully developed eReader available. Like, let me go to a page number.

I'm glad to see them adding bells and whistles from a marketing standpoint... they really have to do this to compete with the Kindle. But I don't need my Nook to do anything but handle books well, and any improvements in that area are much more important to me.

I do the majority of my reading in our family room where my laptop sits about 21/2 feet away -- so have no need or desire to use the nook to surf the web. I did "play" with it when I initially updated to 1.3 but found it awkward to use. Can't say I hated it but sure did not like the way it worked.

Re: Surf's UP!

Same here.  I just haven't had the need for it.

Re: Surf's UP!

It's nice for Wikipedia and a few other things, but if I'm out-and-about with no WiFi I'll have to use my cell phone for lookups.

I really like it for reading Safari Books Online - at least I will once they fix the scrolling glitch. It's more comfortable than long-term reading on the screen, plus I can read in bed.

I use it occasionally for Wikipedia but mostly I use it to go to MLB.com to check the scores while I'm reading.

I've used it a few times.  It's a fair web browser if you don't need it for anything too vital.  It's got some hiccoughs (like handling Weather.com's pop-ups) and scrolling isn't very easy.

I think that I'll be using the browser (not the web) more often, now that I know how to access the sdcard's storage (see here - thanks again, Barbel!).  It will come in handy for my D&D game this weekend, I think.

I use the browser occasionally while I'm reading to look stuff up - but other than some initial fooling around, that's it.

But I do like the idea that I can look things up - I think I used the example in another post of the word huswife when I was reading Emma by Jane Austen the other day. The context made it clear it wasn't just an archaic spelling of the word housewife - and I was able to figure out that it meant a sewing kit.

Re: Surf's UP!

I use it check out stock quotes and to see my Facebook account. Easier than booting up the laptop for a quick peek.

Re: Surf's UP!

I use it, but only for additional "reading" - i.e., wikipedia, google reader (mobile), etc.  If you stick to sites that are primarily text, and that you like because you just want to read more information, then it works pretty well (not perfectly - definitely some kinks to work out, particularly with paging down).  If you're expecting a full multimedia experience, you're going to be pretty disappointed.

Re: Surf's UP!

I've used it probably like twice. Do I see myself surfing on it? No. I surf the 'net like so many times throughout the day, so I'm not missing anything. My classwork is pretty much all on computers anyways.

However, I think it's nice to have for Wikipedia, or checking my email if I don't have my phone (I RARELY ever use it, just text services) around. Heck, it may be used as an alternative to dictionary than the one that comes with the Nook.

Interesting how people commented about the scrolling...I don't have an issue...then again, I haven't really used it.

I do agree with the others, that while it's "nice to have", and I think Nook Dev's wanted to save their butts for those who "MAY" want to use it.  People will aways compare Kindle vs. Nook vs. Sony.  Yes there's dozen other eReaders out there, but not an overly large market.

Re: Surf's UP!

I played with it when I first updated my Nook.  However I use my laptop or ipod touch (when I'm too lazy to get the laptop out) to surf the web.

Re: Surf's UP!

I played with it when I first updated my NOOK as well.  The only thing I ever use it for is reading a couple of my favorite blogs, like Hyperbole and a Half, and that rarely.

Re: Surf's UP!

I use it all the time at work to check my email. I refuse to pay my phone company an extra $30 a month on top of the already crazy price it costs me to keep my cell phone acting as just a phone so it was a very welcome addition to my nook.

Re: Surf's UP!

The first day of the update I played around with it for a couple of hours. Since then I have only used it for Wiki - probably three or four times. There have been a couple of instances when I thought about looking something up in Wiki, but I didn't want to stop reading - it wasn't worth the interruption.

Re: Surf's UP!

I tried using it once also, and I didn't like. So I haven't used it since then. I don't think the Nook should be used for surfing the web, just for reading books.

Re: Surf's UP!

I just received my NOOK for Mother's Day (I'm loving it so much!):womanvery-happy: But unfortunately I've been unable to "surf" with it.  I was in the store today and it jumped right on but for some unknown reason it won't connect to the wi-fi we have at home and I've been reading the various "fixes" on the blogs but it's just not happening yet.

With that said, I still love my NOOK! I'm just a NOOKworm at heart...:womanwink:

No, I never go into the web on it.   That's what my laptop is for!

I use it lots for reading though.  :smileyhappy:
