Today marks 90 days since last and no firmware upgrade

[ Edited ]

nook v1.1 Dec 22, 2009
nook v1.2 Feb  5, 2010 45 days
nook v1.3 Apr 23, 2010 77 days
nook v1.4 Jun 21, 2010 59 days
nook v1.5 Sept19  2010 90 days so far

Today marks 90 days and still no word. Does this concern anyone?

I mean seems to be  a tad way overdue. And people have shown real need to get full use for organization,etc...

I bought the nook based on prior track record for firmware ugrades as one of the selling points.

And wouldn't have even posted this post. If I wasn't totally in the dark without even a clue from B&N.

So for you is it No Biggie and it will come when it comes.

Or are you one that is checking daily and saying come on already?

Also B&N developing new readers and different models ongoing may affect the understaffed firmware team?

Re: Today marks 90 days since last and no firmware upgrade

No concern here.  I'd rather have a well working (aka no bugs) update than one that was rushed through just to hit a superficial delivery date.  With all the ideas for upgrade functionality (e.g. organization, searching, etc.) -- the Nook is still better than my pile of books covering an entire wall of shelves two to three rows deep!

Re: Today marks 90 days since last and no firmware upgrade

I'd tend to agree--I'd rather have a fully-realized firmware upgrade than one that gets released before it's truly ready. And to judge from the thread here containing suggestions for that upgrade, we've given the developers a pretty big job, even if they're only paying attention to, say, the top ten most consistent requests from users.

I think it _would_ be nice, though, to have some conformation from the developers that an upgrade is in the works. I don't need a time estimate or a list of features, just a confirmation that they're working on it.

Absolutely no biggie for me. I don't even think about it.  My nook is a great e-reader, and that's why I bought it. It's doing its job admirably!

Re: Today marks 90 days since last and no firmware upgrade

I don't think it should be a big concern. It is normal during the life cycle of a product for firmware updates to become less frequent. When any product launches there are always bugs that need quick fixes, so there are lots of updates at first. There are also the elements of the user interface that are troublesome to the user experience that the developers just got accustomed to over time and never saw as a problem. These get often get fixes early on too.

It would seem that the stability issues have largely been fixed, and we are somewhere about midway through the usablity where they begin working on new features and overhauling old ones. These types of things typically take a little longer.

Let's hope it's been that long due to the many enhancements that 1.5 will bring.

Re: Today marks 90 days since last and no firmware upgrade

I have a hunch that 2.0 is the next version to be released. With Christmas just around the corner, BN will want the nook to be at least on par with the kindle in respect to capabilities and reliability. BN wouldn't want to blow it by putting out a buggy sub-standard upgrade just before Christmas. Just my hunch though.

Concerned? No. Why should I be concerned? I've been too busy reading instead of worrying about an update that I don't really need.

No worries here.  There are some improvements I'd like to see happen, but just like I don't count minutes/hours/days between charges, I don't keep track of firmware upgrades.

Re: Today marks 90 days since last and no firmware upgrade

Any updates that are coming will not be dealbreakers for me.  Yes, updates can make things go smoother but my Nook does everything I need right now.  Honestly if the next update is anything like the last one they'll probably be adding features I'll never use.

Re: Today marks 90 days since last and no firmware upgrade

In terms of the retail calendar, the holiday season is quickly approaching-- I (and it seems like many others) wouldn't be surprised if we see an update nearer to the season so that it can be used as a Christmas selling point.

If that's not the case, well, I can wait. Folder-type organization would be awesome, but I've been using my nook for serveral months without it so far.

Re: Today marks 90 days since last and no firmware upgrade

This delay can only mean one thing. Or four things, depending on how you count subpoints.

-- B&N is going out of business.

-- It's going to be bought by the Trilateral Commission.

-- Our Nooks will be secretly re-engineered to transmit our most embarrassing personal data (if not our precious bodily fluids) to the new owners, and

-- WE'RE ALL GONNA DIE!!!!!!!!

Note:  None of the above is true, except the last.  But you knew that already, and I hope it won't be so for most of you for a long, long time.  :smileywink:

Conspiracy theories aside, I think that the upgrade schedule up to 1.4 was driven by the huge, glaring defects in each previous version.  Instability in 1.0 and 1.1, screwed up titles and slow page turns in 1.2, page turns that needed to be slowed down a little (so they said) in 1.3.  And then, of course, the notorious games.

There are no longer any huge, glaring defects (except, of course, the notorious games, for some of us).  I take respectful issue with orb9220 on one point:  no one had demonstrated a need for organization.  Lots of people have expressed a desire for it.  I have a lot of desires, too.  "If 'ifs' and 'buts' were candy and nuts, we'd all have a Happy Christmas!"  By that measure, there's still a little over three months to go to make us all happy.

So, with JohnP51 I'm content to wait and keep reading.

[ Edited ]

I'm resigned it my fate at this point :smileytongue:, much like the fox and his sour grapes (read your Aesop!). I guess v1.4 is not a bad point to stop at though it's far from perfect.I can read a book quite well on it. Annotations and highlights are out (I have no access to them so what's the point?) and organization is a wistful dream that feels otherworldly at this point. *Sigh* c'est la vie ...:smileysad:

So, to speak vernacularly for a second, I'm like ... whatever :smileyvery-happy:. We move on, lest we go bananas :smileywink:.

Re: Today marks 90 days since last and no firmware upgrade

I am little concerned/frustrated about the lack of an upgrade, but for more personal-need reasons. I really want to use my nook for my serious reading, (i.e. my literary texts for my English PhD) but the poor highlighting/annotation features make this nearly impossible--I was thrilled when we got Heart of Darkness free from the classics promotion, as we were reading it in British Modernism, but it was hell trying to figure our what passages I had marked, without writing them down--which of course defeats the purpose. The Kindle 3, however has an excellent system for highlighting, clipping, and taking notes, that you can retrieve from your Amazon account and print out.

To make a long story short, I am considering buying a Kindle 3 for my "serious" reading, and keeping the Nook for my recreational reading and for .epub format, so I can have the best of both worlds (after all, the husband has as Xbox, a Playstation 3, and a Wii, because they all have different things that he likes). BUT, if there is a major upgrade in the works, then I don't want to run out and buy a Kindle if the highlights/notes feature will be addressed in said upgrade--but I also don't want to keep struggling with the poor Nook features this semester.

But like I said, this is a particular personal need, and certainly not a need that is crucial to everyone.

Re: Today marks 90 days since last and no firmware upgrade

I hear you here--as an English scholar myself, this is my major frustration with the Nook at present. I really do think it's still an excellent product for other reasons, but that kind of functionality would make it even more useful to even more people. I certainly don't mind waiting as long as it takes for the developers to create this functionality and do a good job at it, but it would be nice to know whether this particular change was in the works, for the reasons you mentioned.

Re: Today marks 90 days since last and no firmware upgrade

[ Edited ]

I'm sure that B&N simply told its software developers not to release anything. :smileywink:

There are any number of possibilities as to what's "holding up" the next release. The most obvious would be if they're spending more time testing it. Most places I've worked (I've been in software development for almost 40 years) will spend about 3 months just in the testing phase. That's after the development is completed. There has been a lot of grousing about bugs over the life of the NOOK design, and maybe this time they want to put out a release with as few bugs as possible.

Another possible consideration is that Wi-Fi is critical, now that there's a NOOK model that only does Wi-Fi, now that there's a web browser that only uses Wi-Fi, and now that there are e-books that can only be downloaded over Wi-Fi. A look around these forums will tell you that there are a lot of non-technical people who are totally befuddled when they try to get NOOK talking on Wi-Fi. Now, I personally don't know what the software could do differently (aside from handling shared-key WEP), but maybe someone had some bright ideas to make Wi-Fi simpler to use.

Another possible consideration (one can only hope, but I doubt it) is maybe they're upgrading from the ancient and power-hungry Android 1.5 to a later version. There have been many releases of Android since 1.5, and battery savings has been a feature of most releases.

Another possible consideration is that they're trying to make a good filing system, not just a filing system. There are a lot of different ways that one could file e-books, and different ways offer different advantages.

But my personal guess is that B&N has dug themselves into a bit of a hole. There are now three different NOOK hardware platforms out "in the wild": the original NOOK 3G, the NOOK 3G CR, and the NOOK Wi-Fi. The CR and the Wi-Fi models have never had a software update—they shipped with 1.4, 1.4.1, or 1.4.2 as appropriate. All software updates thus far have been to the original NOOK 3G. Any software update release now will either have to be compatible across all three platforms, or there will have to be separate editions that absolutely must not cause trouble if someone attempts to use the wrong edition for their device.

Personally, I'm fine with waiting until they've got something that's rock-solid.

(Note: I don't know if there are really NOOK 3G CRs that are shipping with 1.4.2 software or not. I've seen it mentioned once, and it could well have been a typo.)

Re: Today marks 90 days since last and no firmware upgrade

I can confirm that the newest 3G IS version 1.4.2. That's the one mine shows that I purchased on Friday. I thought it odd but glad I have the "newest." and I'm not sure if it's just in my head but the page turns and responsiveness seems faster than the 1.4 I sampled in the store. Either way I'm hoping the shareholder meeting brings some revelations...
