Re: Why I had to buy Kindle instead of Nook for presents

I think you still will read them.  You just won't admit it to anyone.

Have a Nook and have never been able to read a book althrough through since received as a gift in August - due to software issues!  Have had a kindle for 2 years and its AWESOME!  I have never had a problem with it so they will enjoy the kindle!

Re: Why I had to buy Kindle instead of Nook for presents

Just for the record I've had my Nook since last March and other than a cracked bezel (which they replaced for free within 3 days) I have not had a problem with my Nook.

Why didn't you take it to a B&N store after two or three days of it not working?  Why wait four or five months to try and get it fixed?

My nook works like a charm.  so far I have loved the flexibility and the library book feature is awesome.

Re: Why I had to buy Kindle instead of Nook for presents

Long long story....but short version - I spent hours w/technical support.  They would get it to work for a few hours, one time it worked for almost a week straight.

Sent out a replacement, to the wrong address...so now I am just sending the one I have in.

Re: Why I had to buy Kindle instead of Nook for presents

I guess I would of at least given a second Nook a chance.  I can understand the cust serv frustration (trust me) but that is different than commenting on a device based on one faulty one that  didn't get replaced I guess is my point.

I wish you had a better experience with the nook, I think it is a great device.  If you are open to it I think you should give another one a chance, especially if you can't get $ back for your first

you dont need a credit card you can use a debit card thats what my mom use. I dont know why they say credit card it makes people think they HAVE to have one when they can have a debit card which alot of people have.

Sorry to hear about your problem.  I've had my Nook since July and haven't had one issue with it.  Maybe I'm just lucky - maybe you're unlucky.  Who knows.

Re: Why I had to buy Kindle instead of Nook for presents

No I have not left and not a troll. I just dont sit in front of the computer and read forums all the time. I am a busy person and when I have down time, I would rather enjoy reading on my Nook.

And yes I suppose I could have wasted more time researching and then getting a gift card visa and such but Amazon just made it easier not to deal with it all. If Nook support was better, they could have just told me that on the phone. Why should I spend time trying to figure a way around the CC issue? Thats why I attempted to get a straight answer from Nook support. But that didnt happen.

My son is responsible and old enough and he chooses not to have a CC. My parents just dont trust CC.

I just wanted to let BN know thats all.  Meant no harm, other than let BN support caused them to lose sales.

I just want to clear up what I think is a misconception here. In order to buy kindle books, you have to turn on 1 click ordering with a default payment attached to your Amazon account. Amazon's DRM is done differently, but creates a more restrictive device. Unless all Kindles in a household are on the same account, you can't share books, also.

Technically, you CAN share Kindle books (deregister your Kindle, reregister it to the account which has the book you want, get the book,  reregister the Kindle to your account.) Obviously, nook sharing is easier...

Ok, I stand corrected, but I would never do all that.  I will not go to the extreme of saying that one is tied to Amazon for books, because I know that isn't so, but I will say that perhaps the OP here will never know certain tricks that can be done with either device chosen-such as this one you point out-because the OP has expressed a lack of time to read about them.

So, my point and yours may both be moot.

THAT sounds cumbersome! I guess the average Kindle user has more disposable income than I do. I *really* like the library book option and since it appears we will soon have 4 or 5 NOOKs in the immediate family with some crossover in reading tastes, we can share books back and forth pretty easily, just like we always have with paperbacks over the years.

Re: Why I had to buy Kindle instead of Nook for presents

[ Edited ]

so sorry for posting this question on this thread, but since it seems to be talking about this topic I do have a question

I own a Nook.  Love it.  If I buy another Nook for my wife (thus we have two) and register it to the exact same account, does that mean any book we buy from that account can be loaded to either or both?  Not 'lent' to each other, but actually used on both?  If I buy a book from B&N would it just appear on both Nooks via wifi if we are connected to the wifi?

Short answer; yes.

Here is what you need : http://bookclubs.barnesandnoble.com/t5/NOOK-Q-A-and-Support/Two-Nook-Household/m-p/520027#M9786

I will be trying this for the first time soon I think.

I'm under the impression (well I've been told by Kindle owners) that there are a limited number of devices the book can EVER be on, so that if you do this, you may or may not be able to add phones, a new Kindle because you've - at least temporarily -  had said book on X devices.  That you could actually have to repurchase it at some time in the future...  Is this not true, or no longer true?  I'm sure they'd like to know if it's not.

Re: Why I had to buy Kindle instead of Nook for presents

Prepaid CCs can be used as default CCs in your Nook registration. They can be bought from supermarkets or stores somewhere. As long as it's tied to your B&N account, there will be no issues.

I read a previous post about the WIFI issue. There are several factors involved. Customer Support probably meant that the issue is with the router settings. It might be that the router is not set to accept 'visiting' devices when WIFI is accessed. You have to set up your router to be more lenient when it comes to WIFI devices, or even manually configure your Nook to be detected by your router and automatically let in. The router settings would be taken from the manual, or the router Tech Support.

With regards to the devices tied to your B&N account, you can register up to 6 devices in one B&N account.

Just a heads up, although I believe that most people already know of this.

Yes, that is true. Usually a book can only be on 6 Kindles/apps simultaneously (if you no longer need it on a particular Kindle/app, deleting the book frees up one of the slots), though it could be less (I've never seen less than 5, but someone has supposedly seen a book which has a limit of 2).

If you need it on more than 6 (or whatever the limit is for that book) Kindles/apps simultaneously, then you would need to purchase multiple copies.
