ADE - no permission to copy

I'm new to the BN Blog, and was trying to find the answer within but, not finding my exact problem.

I'm on a windows xp laptop, trying to transfer kobobooks to nook. ADE see nook as an optional bookshelf. my laptop is authorized with the same email address nook is registered with. I have tried uninstalling/installing ADE (muliple times). I have delete the ADE files from nook (multple times). and still everytime I try to drag a book to nook(shelf) the message "No permission to copy document here" comes up.

the only authorization option I'm getting under Library is for the computer. Is there somewhere I can see what devices are registered to my account? How can I unauthorize and try again?

I'm sorry if this has been answered somewhere else but, I am simply not finding anything that can help; and am about ready to start pulling out my entire households hairs.

Thanks in advance for any kind of help!

Re: ADE - no permission to copy

Hmm.  it's been awhile since I set mine up, but I think there was a point when I had to "authorize" my NOOK.  Do you remember doing that?

If noone here can answer your questions, I might try on

http://bookclubs.barnesandnoble.com/t5/NOOK-Q-A-and-Support/Using-Adobe-Digital-Editions-ADE-Library...

There are step - by - step instructions here; if it looks different from what you've done, I might try removing everything and starting over.  Or maybe you can catch someone's eye on that thread.

Sorry you're having trouble.  Good luck!

Re: ADE - no permission to copy

If you are not given the chance to authorize the nook it might mean you have to remove the directory named .adobe_digital_editions  (yes, it has a leading dot in the name).

Do this with ADE not running, using filemanger (explorer)

Delete the whole directory, and make sure it didn't go to a trash (recycle bin) on the nook.

Then eject (not safety remove) and unplug the nook, start ADE.

Plug in nook and it should offer you an option to authorize the nook.

Once you do that, it should work for you.

Re: ADE - no permission to copy

Well, icebike pretty much did tell you exactly what to do, but let me give it a go:

  • Make sure ADE is closed and plug your Nook in to your computer.
  • In Windows Explorer, look at the folders on your Nook and delete the one named .adobe_digital_editions (it may ask if you want to permanently delete it --yes, you do).
  • Go to My Computer, right-click the Nook drive, choose Eject, and then unplug your Nook.
  • Open Adobe Digital Editions.
  • Plug your Nook back in to your computer.
ADE should now ask if you want to authorize your Nook.  Once your Nook is authorized, you should be able to copy your ebooks to it.

Re: ADE - no permission to copy

I just bought my Nook and ran into this exact problem ... Your step-by-step instructions got me through it quickly, and now I'm happily reading my library books on my Nook.

Thanks!

Re: ADE - no permission to copy

I've followed these steps (and uninstalled ADE a few times) but I'm still getting the "no permission to copy" message after authorizing. Is there a trash folder on the Nook that I'm possibly not seeing? Anyone else run into this problem?

Are you using ADE to do the copy? Library e-books generally need to be installed into your NOOK by ADE—you can't just copy them over with Windows Explorer or whatever like you can e-books that you bought. ADE needs to set the permission limitations into your NOOK.

Open Adobe Digital Editions and plug in your NOOK (you may need to do that in the opposite order on a Mac). Your NOOK will show up in ADE's left sidebar. Drag'n'drop the e-book from ADE's library listing onto the "nook" entry in ADE's left sidebar.

Re: ADE - no permission to copy

After months of using the overdrive library and ADE to read library books on my nook, I suddenly developed the same problem today.  I was looking around on adobe's website to see if this is some new issue in light on the new software update, and a chat box for adobe support popped up.  Anyway, 'Albert' at adobe walked me through steps that solved the issue.  These steps are different from the others listed here.  I don't know if this will help you, but this is what fixed my problem.

I opened up ADE, and then hit control+shift+D.  I clicked on de-authorizing my computer.  Then I closed ADE.

I re-opened ADE, and authorized it by putting in my email and password.  Once that was done, I found that my library book wouldn't open.  So, I used the drop down menu to delete my library book.  (I didn't return the book, just deleted the copy of it.)  Then I closed ADE.

I went back to my overdrive library and downloaded my library book again.  It opened up in my ADE and I was able to see the pages on my computer to know the book was really there.

At that point, I plugged in my nook.  When it was listed on the ADE, I did a drag and drop with the book, and this time it worked with no error message.

Good to know, although before you did this, had you re-downloaded the library book?  I wonder if the download was somehow corrupted and re-downloading the book solved the problem.  Something to think about if it happens again.

Re: ADE - no permission to copy

Yes, I tried that.  By the time I started looking for help online, I had 3 copies of the same book on ADE, and none of them could be copied onto my nook.  Since it had been about a month since I last had a library book on my nook, I figured that somehow either nook's new software or something with Adobe meant that they were no longer playing well together.  Anyway, I'm glad it was an easy fix and I can read library books on my nook again.

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! Your post was just the thing to help me! We spent an hour trying to download a book from our library to find that we were unable to copy it to our nook. We went through your steps and bam! we are happily reading now!
