After following many of the above suggestions with no success and many moments of stress this post has fixed my problems!!  Yeah!!!!!  Thank you so much - it seems I can now borrow books from the library.

Are these books from the library, books from another bookstore or books from B&N?

Have you disconnected your Nook from the computer without ejecting first.

Are you logged into your Adobe account with your Adobe ID (Not anonymously)

Did you try the suggestion about deleting the adobe digital editions files further up in the post?

Re: ADE - user not activated - although both comp/nook authorized

My Husband  (a network engineer) took more than 2 hours last night trying to fix it in addition to my 3+.  The problem was with ADE not my nook...oh, and they were library books...sad thing is, ADE had no problems 3 days ago (with my other books and my first library book), it was just when I checked out another book that I had issues with ALL the rest of my book...

Oh DH ended up doing the same thing I did, but somehow it "finally" worked...he has told me of issues with Adobe before and the problems he has at work (he says they have out rivaled MS for the most buggy programs that make you want to toss you computer through a window and go all Office Space on it)

I have to use a lot of Adobe products and yes, I think that I would agree about the bugs. The other problem is standing on your head trying to use their software. Most of the help files are online and not well organized. If you want any other sort of help, Adobe does publish help guides that cost around $60 for the paperback version. The black-and-yellow "For Dummies" books have just about made their living from writing about simple instructions on Adobe products.

One thing to remember about using Adobe Digital Editions, is to properly eject your nook before closing ADE and disconnecting the nook from the computer. ADE gets easily scrambled. It's unfortunate that ADE does not include an "eject device" option in their menus, like most other transfer-to-device software provides.

Glad you are back up and running, things like this can be a real pain.

Re: ADE - user not activated - although both comp/nook authorized

I have tried all of the suggestions on here and I still am receiving the message User Not Activated on my NOOK. I downloaded the book from the library and it is on the NOOK but this is the message I get. What is going on? I have been working on this for numerous hours and no luck. Any suggestions?

Hook your nook up to your computer with Adobe Digital Editions NOT RUNNING on the computer.

Delete the folder called .adobe-digital-editions.

Properly EJECT the nook, and disconnect it.

Start ADE on your computer.

Then plug the nook back in, and re-authorize the nook.

Drag the book in ADE to the Nook folder in the left hand pane.

Re: ADE - user not activated - although both comp/nook authorized

Thank you.  I spent two hours trying to activate my Nook not realized that it was activated but corrupt.  As soon as I followed this directions, which took two minutes, I was up and running.  I have checked out my first book!!!  Thank you for making this user friendly post!  If your nook says, "User not activated" after attempting to add a book from ADE, TRY THESE DIRECTIONS!! :smileyhappy:  So Very Happy...now if the books I really want would only get off the waiting list!

Re: ADE - user not activated - although both comp/nook authorized

I am having the same problem with my nook. When I try to download digital library books, it always tells me user is not activated. I have tried everything I know to do. I have had my nook since Christmas and still haven't figured it out. If I take it to the nearest B&N, would there be someone there that could help me?

Re: ADE - user not activated - MAC problem!

I could not properly delete the 2 directories on a mac even when I issued the command to show hidden files, it didn't show the .adobe* directory.  So I plugged the nook into a pc, deleted both directories.  I plugged it back in to the mac.  Started ADE and it asked to authorize it.  I'm using snow leopard, so the window asking for authorization was messed up, but I was able to click on Accept and after about 30 seconds it worked.  I've been trying this off and on for 6 months before someone suggested the problem is the Mac.  Good luck to everyone.  btw, I have the non-color Nook.

Re: ADE - user not activated - MAC problem!

I had the same problem on my Mac. I followed the directions and nothing improved.  Finally I borrowed a PC and followed the directions.  It worked!  Plus, it is working now that I transferred back to my Mac.  Part of my problem was that my Adobe email address was different from my Nook email address.  I had to create a new Adobe ID.  But I think getting on a PC was part of the solution, although I love my Mac!

Re: ADE - user not activated - although both comp/nook authorized

I found on another page the answer. I was searching for over 3 hours and did try every advise. This one worked and it took 5 minutes.

Re: Authorizing my nook

I figured it out!!  I'll explain what I know in case someone else experiences this.

I first downloaded the ADE software before I had an Adobe ID. I set up the ID when installing the software and made it the same as my nook ID. I tried the authorization process described in my initial post but nothing happened to my knowledge.  I had read somewhre you need to have an Adobe ID before downloading the software so I deleted ADE from my computer and tried again - no luck.

In my search for help I read that when ADE authorizes a nook it sets up several folders on the device.  When I looked at the folders on my nook one of the folders was already there - I assumed it came with the nook but it apparently got established when I first tried to authorize the nook.  For whatever reason as mentioned above that initial attempt did not work.

Then I decided to delete the folder (adobe.digital.edtions-not sure of exact title) from my nook and then try the process of opening the ADE software and then pluging in my nook and it worked!!  The ADE software recognized my device and authorized it.  I have since successfully transferred several books I have borrowed from the online public library to my nook.

Again just posting this in case someone else happens to make the same mistaked I did.  Hope it helps.

Tom

For mac users, you need to use a terminal to see the hidden files. Check the second post at this URL:
