Since 1997, you’ve been coming to BarnesandNoble.com to discuss everything from Stephen King to writing to Harry Potter. You’ve made our site more than a place to discover your next book: you’ve made it a community. But like all things internet, BN.com is growing and changing. We've said goodbye to our community message boards—but that doesn’t mean we won’t still be a place for adventurous readers to connect and discover.

Now, you can explore the most exciting new titles (and remember the classics) at the Barnes & Noble Book Blog. Check out conversations with authors like Jeff VanderMeer and Gary Shteyngart at the B&N Review, and browse write-ups of the best in literary fiction. Come to our Facebook page to weigh in on what it means to be a book nerd. Browse digital deals on the NOOK blog, tweet about books with us,or self-publish your latest novella with NOOK Press. And for those of you looking for support for your NOOK, the NOOK Support Forums will still be here.

We will continue to provide you with books that make you turn pages well past midnight, discover new worlds, and reunite with old friends. And we hope that you’ll continue to tell us how you’re doing, what you’re reading, and what books mean to you.

Activity reader not working?!?

I am SO FRUSTRATED! I could read a whole hardcopy faster than I'm reading a couple of chapters on this brand new piece of,,,, [remember, you ARE a lady after all] The book starts out with "Sorry Activity reader [in application reader] is not responding. I do nothing, and it just says the same, or goes to screensaver. So I click the top botton, and it says, force close or wait. I push wait the page sometimes turns, and then the whole issue repeats itself.  Sometimes I don't even get another page. What can I do, except toss the thing in the trash and chalk it up to one bad experience.

More information is needed if you want help. Start out with which Nook you have and provide all the details about the problem you are having.

@GinnyWi

Welcome!  :smileyhappy:

Sorry to hear that you're having trouble.

What device are you using?  This is the Nook Tech Support board, but those don't sound like Nook error messages.

If you're using a NookColor, try this board:

http://bookclubs.barnesandnoble.com/t5/NOOKcolor-Technical-Support/bd-p/NOOKcolortechnicalsupport

For Nook Apps on other devices, here's the one you want:

http://bookclubs.barnesandnoble.com/t5/NOOK-Apps-Technical-Support-iPad/bd-p/eReaders

If you really ARE on a Nook, with an e-ink display, post again and we'll try to brainstorm it.

Re: Activity reader not working?!?

I believe I have ssen the OP message in some earlier versions when certain activity is occurring and gets stuck.  For example if it got stuck trying to repage a PDB file.

The best solution in those cases was to completely power off (hold power button about 6 seconds).  And then press the power button again have it boot again.

Re: Activity reader not working?!?

Hi! This is the first time on this community. My father-in-law has an regular Nook which he received for Xmas. Lately, he has been having the same problem with the "Sorry Activity....". This only starting happening while he is reading a Sherlock Holmes multi-volume Nook book that has over 1500 pages. My first thought is that there is not enough memory to move through this book. Could this be the problem?

@JR2011

Welcome!  :smileyhappy:

It's possible, but what is far more likely is that there is something wrong with the file.  Many of those big compilation files were put together on the cheap, in a shoddy manner. Someone upthread mentioned seeing this problem when Nook tries to paginate a long PDB file.  This could be the problem; I've never seen the message, but I have seen my Nook hesitate on large PDBs.

The first step, as has been pointed out upthread, is to cycle the power -- turn the Nook off, give it a minute, then turn it on again.  That simple action resolves a remarkable number of problems of this kind.

If that doesn't help, your father-in-law might try downloading a fresh copy of the book from the source where he obtained it.  The issue may be with the download rather than with the book itself and if so, that should resolve it.

Good luck.

Re: Activity reader not working?!?

I have been getting the same message this morning.  I tried powering down and also removing the battery to reset it.  It will open up to the page I was originally on and when I go to turn the page it will say opening your book.  The message clears and I go to turn the page again, and again it says opening book.  It will finally clear and allow me to turn the page (slowly) read for a few pages and repeat this process.  This is started about 700 pages into at 960 page book that I downloaded from Barnes and Noble.  Can you help?

Re: Activity reader not working?!?

I am having a horrible time with my nook-the activity reader message is causing me to want to throw away my nook.  The pages will not turn-what is the problem-I have the nook for almost two years-why would this issue start now.  I am going to buy an I-pad.

Re: Activity reader not working?!?

I'm having the problem with my Nook color while reading a free ebook I side loaded from my PC. As stated earlier, the problem may be with the file, not the Nook. If it's happening with a B&N purcheced book, I'd take it to a store. Maybe they can reload the software update.

My Nook Activity Reader Not Working Either

02/06/2013:  My activity reader isn't working, either.  I am very disappointed, as I can't highlight or make notes on my Nook turn pages having the same problem.  Do I need to send in my Nook for repair?  I am going down to the B&N store in my neighborhood today to have them trouble-shoot.  If they can't find the problem, I will go back to hard-copies.

If you get the "Activity Reader" not working error, just reboot your NOOK and it will restart the process.

Make sure you reboot and not just put the nook to sleep. When it is asleep your screen saver is displayed, when you power off the original NOOK first edition you get a white screen.

Re: Activity reader not working?!?

I have the same problem on my new Nook HD +. Was reading a book. Stopped on about page 300. Started my Nook tonight, then opened the book. It opened to first page. closed it and tied again. This time I got a message that Reader is not working, not functioning, not something.  So how do I get any help and where and when?

Re: Activity reader not working?!?

I  purchased "Girls of Summer" by Barbara Bretton through   b & N e book for my nook color.  I can not go past page 214.  I get the error  Sorry Activity reader [in application reader] is not responding

I have two nooks, tried both and got same error.

I deleted the book then was going to try to re-dowload.  However, I didn't realize  I would have to pay $2.99 again for the book.

I would really like to finish the book; however, if no solution can I get a refund of the $2.99 I paid for the ebook?

Thanks

First thing call B&N customer support (1-800-thebook) and see if you can get the book back in your account.

Second thing, NEVER delete a book from your account unless you are sure you don't want it again, because if you do, you will need to repurchase it.

Third, if you suspect that a book has downloaded improperly, or might have been updated by the publisher, the correct procedure to re-download the book is listed below:

1) Archive the book (either on your device or the B&N website).

2) Re-sync your device with B&N, this will remove the book from your device. If you do not re-sync the book will not be removed and will not re-download.

3) Un-archive the book (either on your device or the B&N website)

4) Re-sync your device to download the new copy of the book.
