I have been borrowing library books for almost a year with no problems. All of a sudden my computer won't acknowledge the Nook. I can hook it up via the USB and it will charge while connected to the PC but I can't transfer anyfiles as the computer won't acknowledge it as a drive. Any ideas?????

Reboot both your NOOK and your PC. To reboot your NOOK (1st Edition), hold the power button down for 20 seconds to shut it all the way off, then turn it back on.

Sounds a bit like a problem I have on a re-occurring basis. One thing that happens when mine goes into this mode is the available file space on my Nook goes to zero. I re boot and check it and it is around 98% and I suppose the exact amount will be determined by how much you have downloaded. Then, if I plug it in, I can see the Nook for about 2-3 minutes, then it disappears.
BTW, the file indicator is just something i've noticed that occurs at the same time and is not necessarily the cause of this - don"t know.
I have been able to temporarily resolve this by "ejecting" the Nook when it is reckognized by my PC as in the reboot above.
Sometimes this works and sometimes it doesn't.
I have learned to live with it because B&N has never responded to my questions about this and I suspect it is caused by a specific or unique set of conditions and not many people experience this.
FWIW

I could also be a bad cable.
Different pins are involved in power and data transfer.

Try it with a different cable, different computer, and/or different ports.
