Bought used nook, can't Unregister, HELP!

My husband bought me a used nook and the seller never unregistered it as we asked him too before mailing it to us...can't get ahold of seller now...I have tried to unregister, reset factory setting, change email, but it won't let me do anything because the sellers email and password is still set in the nook. Any ideas how to delete their setting and place mine?

Thanks ahead of time for all your help!

If doing a full factory reset—hold power button 20 seconds to shut off, turn back on, repeat for a total of six cycles—doesn't do it, it's time to call Customer Service at 1-800-THE-BOOK (1-800-843-2665), option 2 for Digital Support.

Can't get ahold of the seller raises suspicions right away.

Sounds like the guy who sold it to you may not have been the legitimate owner, or they would have been eager to unregister it before shipping.

You could always buy several really expensive books to gain their attention.  :smileysurprised:

In that case, shouldn't she contact B&N to try to find out who it belonged to? Possible hot property and all ...

Buying expensive books might just hurt the legitowner (in case it's not the same as the seller and therefore can't do anything about this). Weird ...

The cake is a lie.

Re: Bought used nook, can't Unregister, HELP!

The suggestion was partly tongue in cheek.  But attempting a purchase (something free) will also serve the purpose of notifying the original owner (via the email sent out after every sale)  that they should take steps to protect their account and perhaps de-register the nook from their account.

If not stolen, the seller will also get that email and get in contact with the buyer.

So in any case, its not a totally bad idea to buy a free book.

LOL. Agreed on the free book :smileytongue:

Guess I can see now why so many folks are asking for password locks on their nooks. Perhaps just while buying would be enough so we don't have to enter passwords just for opening it up and reading.

The cake is a lie.

Was it bought on eBay?  If so, does the email address in the settings page under owner name match the eBay email address?  You could determine if it was stolen that way.

Just do a factory reset as Doug Suggested, and the nook will de-register itself.

I wouldn't do a factory reset if there was any indication it was stolen.

True, I should have clarified that if it didn't appear to be stolen.  If it was stolen, I would talk to the appropriate authorities, as much as that hassle would stink...

Re: Bought used nook, can't Unregister, HELP!

To perform a factory fallback on your device:

1. Make sure your NOOK has been turned off by pressing the power button for 5-10 seconds.

2. Next, you will need to power off NOOK 6 consecutive times. To do this, hold the power button down for about 20 seconds.

3. Once 20 seconds have past, let go, and press and hold the power button again for another 20 seconds.

4. After 6 cycles are completed, power on NOOK by tapping the power button.

5. Upon power up you will see “Installing Software Update.” on the E-ink Display. Your NOOK will now re-format, and reinstall the original software version.

6. A progress bar will be displayed on the LCD; progress will read as follows: Mounting Partitions, Restoring Factory Fallback, Verifying Update.

7. After about 3 minutes, the progress will complete and your NOOK should now start up as it did the first time you used it.

Re: Bought used nook, can't Unregister, HELP!

I did all this just a week ago with all the resets and it was a waste of time. So I called the B&N 1 800 number. Long story short I finally told him it was used and he asked me who the name of the previous owner was, and the serial number( luckely I found the guys name in Paypal), and he said he will be right back in about 3 minutes he came back and said now try to register it and it worked.

It takes them to un-register it. I guess to prove its not stolen.

Yes, the original owner should unregister it before getting rid of it.  It's the same reason why, if you change your email address, you need to unregister the Nook before changing the email address on your B&N account.  Protection against someone stealing your Nook and then unregistering and registering it in their name and using it.

Re: Bought used nook, can't Unregister, HELP!

The same here..... I bought my used Nook today at a Pawn shop as a bday present for me:smileyhappy: Same problem! I can't even buy a free book because it prompts me to sign in.  When I input my address, it tells me to register device.  I try to register and it tells me that the device is already registered.  Please deregister...yada yada... FRUSTRATED.  I call B&N but I am placated and told that I can not get help from CS phone support b/c the device is registered to someone else.  Ok... I understand the issues explained in re: previous owner.  However, could B&N not offer to contact that person to clear this issue?  IF a problem/issue with any tranaction existed, it seems to be logical to have the information of the person who now has the Nook in his/her possession.... Just Sayin.

You bought a Nook in a pawn shop. It was still registered to a previous owner.

Might have been stolen property...Just Sayin. :smileywink:

My nook was registered under a different email than my bn account...this reset seemed to work, thank you.
