I would like to thank you all for your input. I have solved the problem some time ago. I now use Calibre to check all my downloads. I don't care to use PDF as I found it uses more space than EPUB. I now have over 300 free books on my Nook and growing.
Also, where I work, we are now selling the Nook ( you can buy it elsewhere than B&N) and I highly recommend it to the others. A lot of people have thanked me as they also enjoy their Nooks now!
Again thanks all!

I will add to stilljojo's answer. Make sure you plug in the nook BEFORE you open Adobe Dig Ed. The first time you do this it will ask you - or rather tell you that it needs to be registered? with your adobe signin--or something like that- just say yes- it will do all the work for you. THEN you can drag the (previously downloaded from the library to computer) book you want over to the nook icon. I went to the Adobe site and the answer was so painfully clear I wish I had gone there before trying all the above unnecessary solutions.
