Cannot load version update.

Here's my sob story.  I was going to give my 1st Edition Nook to someone.  So I unregistered it and unfortunately hit the return to factory settings button.  Figured I would clear the 1st edition of everything.  Well, it certainly did that.  I changed my mind and decided to keep it as a "just in case" reader.  I re-registered this morning.  No problem.  But I can't download any of my books and I can't get the latest software version that came out last year.  I tried to sideload the update, but it is not available.  I have the device connected to wi-fi but nothing is updating yet.  Any assistance would be appreciated.

Hook up the Nook to your computer open the drive that says nook find the update file that is on your Nook and delete it. Go to this web link http://www.barnesandnoble.com/u/Software-Updates-NOOK-1st-Edition/379003193 and download the file to your computer. Make sure the file is named properly. Also you should do a checksum on this file to make sure it isn't corrupted. Side load it to your Nook.

Re: Cannot load version update; UPDATE: NOW library won't even download.

Thank you for providing me with the link that I was unable to access yesterday for my My 1st Edition (3g model).  Unfortunately the update comes up as a "signed bravo update.dat" file and when I copy it to the reader it shows as an invalid update.

My newest issue with my reader is now my library won't update and it constantly closes.  So, I can't download any of my books.  I tried to sideload the books and it does the same thing.  Now I can only use it to purchase books but can't read anything on it.  I even tried removing the battery and waited over 30 minutes and reinstalled it (didn't do anything).

Is this B&N's way of telling us there will be no more support for the 1st edition and we have to buy a Simple Touch instead?

If you did just a regular factory reset, your firmware version should not be changed (this only happens when you do a reset by interrupting boot 6 times). So check your firmware version, it should still be 1.7.

If your firmware is not 1.7 the update should work. The supplied link is correct. Make sure the filename was not changed in any way (in needs to end in just '.dat"). Try another browser to download the update.

Make sure that your Nook is registered correctly (you can see this in settings). And that it is registered to the correct account.

When you use search for new B&N content what happens? Do you get an error message?

Make sure that you have a good 3G connection (see the symbol on top of the screen).

Were you perhaps using Wifi before the reset? Or is there Wifi available somewhere that you can try?

If you sideload books you need to copy them to "My Documents", not to your B&N library. And you wll have to change your view from the B&N library to "My Documents".

The N1E is still supported. You should not have any problems.

UPDATE: NOW library won't even download.

I checked the version yesterday and you are right it is 1.7.0.  The ereader is correctly registered.  My 1st edition still won't download my B&N Library.  The "download B&N content in progress" is grayed out and I get kicked back to the home screen after 1 minute and then the screensaver is loaded. I have the sleep set for the longest amount of time so it shouldn't just go into sleep mode after 1-2 minutes.  I was able to purchase a book yesterday on my 1st edition but it failed to download on the ereader and I also get kicked back to the home screen after 1-2 minutes.

The reader was working perfectly until I downloaded a sample of a book 2 weeks ago.  Could I be having a battery problem?

Have you tried leaving it plugged into the wall charger while you download? If it is a battery problem that should alleviate it.

You mentioned that you have a couple of Nook Tablets as well, is it possible you bought an enhanced book that won;t download to the 1st edition?

Do the number of books in your online library exceed the capacity of your 1st edition?

I would suggest archiving any recent purchases (up to say 1 week before you noticed the problem) in your B&N library and seeing if that fixes the problem.
