Converted Word document into PDF using 'Save as', but...

it still shows up on my Nook as .docx with wonky formatting. It's original program was Word so maybe that's the problem. I was hoping I could save paper and printer ink by reading on my nook.

Does anyone know how to help this? Are there other programs I should get to enhance my nook experience, help sideloading my own documents as well as help organization?

Thanks in advance. I appreciate the help.

@PThom_86

Welcome!  :smileyhappy:

Yes.  Download Calibre to your computer, if you haven't already.

Once you have Calibre installed, resave your .docx doc as a .rtf doc, and use Calibre to reformat your .rtf as an epub.  You should find that much more enjoyable on your Nook.

Hard page breaks in the .rtf will convert to hard page breaks in the epub, so do some editing in Word first to make the document look the way you want it.

Good luck!

Thank you. I'm downloading now. I've heard good things on the boards about it. I'll let you know how it goes.

A friend sent me a book-length typescript in Word and I converted it this way into an epub.  After I got the hang of the page break thing it converted beautifully -- almost professional looking.  So I know it works.

Hope it does for you, too. :smileyhappy:

The .rtf wasn't able to be converted for some reason. Tried the PDF, it converted to EPUB and it worked, but the text is really small and doesn't resize. I gotta play with it some more I guess.

There are also a number of pdf printers you can install that allows you to "print" a document or webpage into a pdf file. I think there's also a microsoft office add-in available

When I save it as html and convert to epub with calibre it works much better. Now, to figure out all this organizational stuff it can do.

Re: Converted Word document into PDF using 'Save as', but...

Microsoft supplies a free Office addin that supports saves as pdf and xps.

The 2007 office add-in:  http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=4D951911-3E7E-4AE6-B059-A2E79ED87041&displa...

I believe its included standard in Office 2010

Calibre can convert such pdf to epub.  Especially if you don't like how the PDF looks on the Nook.

Re: Converted Word document into PDF using 'Save as', but...

Does anyone have idea on the items that are "Still Problems"

I have been converting my personal document from WORD (2007) so that Save-As PDF files, can just be dragged to my Nook. I don't ever plan to publish this, I want to be able to quickly edit the Word doc to indicate a new item in my collection. Save-As, drag & I'm updated.

So far:

Use the reverse Paragraph symbol to display formats.  This will help you spot odd stuff.

Do not include Tables. Covert to flat(er) text.

Remove All Tabs - These interpret as tables, and show up as columns. (With column A, then Column B, then column C  displayed).

Try a global replace with either a space, or other special set of characters.

I think that Ariel and Cabrini are the preferred fonts.

Use either block paragraphs, with a trailing space of 6pt. Format the whole doc this way.

THEN hard Enter become paragraph enders.

Shift-Enter become spacers, and keep the lines together (nice for poetry)

Still to try

Some posts suggest that 14pt is the same as Noon small size.

The indented Paragraph format is supposed to work, and keep the indents.

Changing the Word Doc to be the size of a paperback.  This should display better, but I don't want to do this, as I would still like to print the Word Doc on standara 8.5x11 paper,

Still problems:

Nook ignors all of the indents. So, my long list of books isn't formatting pretty.

Sometimes the separate titles are wrapping into one line.  Need to confirm that the block paragraphs are set for this section of the text.

Underliines are being interpreted, :Example (underlined date):  1979   is    1979 linefeed  ____  linefeed
