Critical Battery Alert image is frozen on my Nook First Edition (black&white - no touch screen)

Ok so the Critical Battery Alert image is stuck on my screen. I plugged in my nook around 11 this morning and just now (just past 6 pm) took it off of the charger. What the heck is wrong with this thing and how can i fix it??

Did the amber LED come on when you attached the charger to your Nook?

If the amber LED came on, did it ever go back out?

Did you try the power button while the Nook was connected to the charger?

Did you try holding the power button on the top edge of the Nook down for at least 20 seconds then pressing it again for at least six seconds? Are you familiar with the difference between the First Edition's standby mode and the full cutoff?

Have you tried connecting the Nook to an operating computer's USB port? If you did, did the computer indicate that an external strorage decice (like a flash drive) had been connected? Did the main display on the Nook change? Did you try the power button while the Nook was connected to the computer?

Do you know how to remove the back cover from your Nook and remove the battery? If so, have you tried removing the battery, waiting a while then reinnstalling the battery and with the charger connected making another power on then charging cycle?

[ Edited ]

I did not try these things, however I did do what this post mentioned: http://bookclubs.barnesandnoble.com/t5/NOOK-First-Edition-Technical/100-to-1-charge-Stuck-on-Battery... It did not work for me but I just plugged my nook into my computer and the amber light came on. So thanks for suggesting that. Let's see if it will charge it though.

Many people are accustomed to LCD panels going blank when the device is turned off. E-ink panels like those used in the First Edition and Simple Touch resemble LCD panels, but don't go blank when the device powers down. A device with an e-Ink display can completely shut down and its battery go completely dead and still retain the last image on the e-ink display.

I've seen reports that the First Edition manages battery charging with its normal digital circuitry. Rechargable batterys have been know to overheat and/or suffer from reduced operating lifetimes if recharging isn't properly managed. With a completely discharged battery the device might need to be cycled from full shutdown to full operation or standby mode to initiate recharging.
