Since 1997, you’ve been coming to BarnesandNoble.com to discuss everything from Stephen King to writing to Harry Potter. You’ve made our site more than a place to discover your next book: you’ve made it a community. But like all things internet, BN.com is growing and changing. We've said goodbye to our community message boards—but that doesn’t mean we won’t still be a place for adventurous readers to connect and discover.

Now, you can explore the most exciting new titles (and remember the classics) at the Barnes & Noble Book Blog. Check out conversations with authors like Jeff VanderMeer and Gary Shteyngart at the B&N Review, and browse write-ups of the best in literary fiction. Come to our Facebook page to weigh in on what it means to be a book nerd. Browse digital deals on the NOOK blog, tweet about books with us,or self-publish your latest novella with NOOK Press. And for those of you looking for support for your NOOK, the NOOK Support Forums will still be here.

We will continue to provide you with books that make you turn pages well past midnight, discover new worlds, and reunite with old friends. And we hope that you’ll continue to tell us how you’re doing, what you’re reading, and what books mean to you.

File names change after side loading pdf books

Am I doing something wrong? A bunch of my 300+ side loaded pdf books have path name, making it so I have no clue which book it is. (i.e. a book named "Dean Koontz- The Bad Place" shows as file://E:\books\New Folder\Dean Koont... and I can't even see the rest of the title because it's so long. I initially had them all in folders by author (The Dean Koontz folder had each file named the book title), when that didn't work, I manually renamed them all i.e.  "Author- Title", so they would at least be in alphabetical order by author. Worked for most of them, but then there are all the books named like this... how do I fix it??

Do you have Calibre on your computer yet?

There's clearly a problem with the metadata -- the data that carries the title and author information -- on your PDFs.  If they are not protected by DRM, you can fix the metadata in Calibre and reload them to your Nook.

Re: File names change after side loading pdf books

You need to add the correct "meta" information to the PDF file so it doesn't default to using the filename as the name of the documet. The easiest way to do this is to install Calibre and edit the tags there, then use it to install the books on your nook.

Re: File names change after side loading pdf books

Thanks for the help, and the link... I started re-naming yesterday, I'm guessing this will take a few hours as I have a lot of books in my nook! Too bad it can't read the files like they are named on the pc.

Again, what are you using for sideloading?

Get Calibre and stop with the renaming.

You can also use BeCyPDFMetaedit It's free, and super simple to use. I know everyone here loves Calibre, but I for some reason don't. I'm not giving up yet, but I'm still not won over. I do however <3 BeCyPDFMetaEdit.

I also find that Calibre takes much longer for me to change my meta info. The other program literally takes 2 seconds.

@CritterKeeper

Yep, the people here who use it really seem to like it.

Too bad that the people who wrote it could only come up with a name that looks like a bunch of random letters, instead of something sexy and memorable like "Calibre".

For such trivial reasons are important decisions sometimes made.  :smileyvery-happy:
