Re: GO BACK TO THE OLD ICONS! (1.2)

I must say that the old icons flowed together well. It was like a rainbow where the colors just blended together more than these separated, rounded icons in the new version.  I will get used to the new ones, but I would prefer the old ones if I had a choice.

Re: GO BACK TO THE OLD ICONS! (1.2)

I also miss the old icons.  I found them warmer and prettier, and they were still so new I wasn't tired of them yet or ready for a fresh look.  I think giving users a choice as to which style they have is the way to go.  It is a minor issue, and I agree with those who point out that basic functionality is the first thing that should be getting attention.  But just a suggestion to the development team:  I'm sure many Nook owners would be pleased to be able to choose the original style of icon in settings in order to further customize the Nook to their own taste.  It would be interesting to know if the new icons confer some other advantage, i.e., perhaps they help with battery life, speed, file size, etc?

OFFICIAL NOTICE:  This thread is a perfect example of the idiom that no matter what you do there are some people who WILL NEVER BE HAPPY no matter how trivial or inconsequential the "issue" is.

Re: GO BACK TO THE OLD ICONS! (1.2)

One can be happy overall while simultaneously stating a preference for one option or another:  I like the update.  I'm glad there's an update.  However, I prefer the old buttons.  FYI Barnes and Noble and thank you for the update.

Whether they want to change it back or give the option is up to them.  I don't think anyone in this thread (so far) is overly upset or angry or saying they're going to destroy their Nook over this.  B&N made a change and we're discussing it.  Some like it, some don't.  What's the harm in expressing opinions?

By the way, the triviality of this home button issue is also a matter of opinion.  It's more important to some than to others.  No one is wrong to care about it.

No good deed goes unpunished.

But look at it this way EastCoast:

What a resounding success this update is if the ONLY thing people can whine about is the color of an icon.

The dev team knocked the ball out of the park!

To the icon nazis:  you won't even notice those icons while you are reading your nook.

So if looks did matter, you wouldn't have married your wife?  LOL  :-)

Seriously, looks matter, sure, but how about FUNCTIONALITY.  It's the same way, if you turn your nook sideways or upside down.  That's what's "important"--my point.

Even if looks were ALL that mattered, I would've married my wife. :smileywink:  And no, I will not share a picture with you.:smileyvery-happy:

I am expecting delivery of my nook at any moment.  Maybe its lateness is really a good thing. At least I won't notice the differences in the icons, and from what I am reading, this version 1.2 is a success.  Thanks to all of you for sharing your tips and tricks.  I expect my nook start up to go smoothly!

I haven't seen the new icons and haven't updated to 1.2, but I will say this: The fact that B&N is spending the time and effort to make cosmetic changes when there are actual functional issues with the software is hugely disappointing.  Let's get the thing working first, then make changes to the appearance.

Oh, calm down kerifiur.

What was the on-staff artist to do.  Pick up a programming manual and start cutting code?  You really want that?

I'm GLAD they changed it.  It indicates that the staff consists of more than two guys in a dingy office strewn with empty pizza boxes.  If they have a graphic artist on staff it means the level of commitment is high.

Really, is that all you can find to complain about in this upgrade?  A roaring Success, in other words.

As I said, I haven't gotten the update yet.  Hopefully everything will work and all the problems will be solved.  You might be glad they changed it, but can you say there is NOTHING else you'd like changed on your nook?

How do you know they have an on-staff graphic artist for the nook?  Most companies outsource this type of work, or leverage a marketing specialist, or hire a contractor.  Either way they have to pay this person, and it's money that could go to development work.  I know this because this is the industry I work in.  I also know that when customers are complaining about a product, one of the go-to changes is look and feel, and very often it's camouflage - look at this cool new interface, all the problems must be resolved!  So unless all the problems actually are resolved, and I mean ALL the problems, I'd rather B&N put their funding toward issue resolution.

Re: GO BACK TO THE OLD ICONS! (1.2)

Personally, I don't mind the new home screen icons at all. But the fact that they used that same rounding/shading technique on all the white interface buttons makes them much, MUCH harder to read. I'd really like to see these changed back.

Re: GO BACK TO THE OLD ICONS! (1.2)

Goodness, why the heck are some people all up in arms about this post? Since when is voicing a personal preference on a grahpic something to be so riled up about? No one is whining or freaking out (ok, maybe a couple of people). By and large, it just would have been nice to have the option. Calm yourselves :smileyhappy: And if this is such a trivial issue, why bother posting on and on about how no good deed goes unpunished, and how we're all a bunch of whiners? :smileyhappy:

Re: GO BACK TO THE OLD ICONS! (1.2)

So far I am happy with the update, and pleased that it was rolled out in a timeframe that I consider pretty fast.  I also don't think that expressing a preference for one appearance option over another necessarily equates to whining.  One may reasonably express ones views or make suggestions without it being the equivalent of overall disatisfaction or even complaint.  I freely admit that the "look and feel" of the Nook was one of the factors that made me choose it over other ereaders (or in fact over not owning an ereader at all, as this is the only one that felt "right" to me).  Details that some consider insignificant may be more important to others.  That's why the ability to customize and personalize these devices is so satisfying and important to many people.  Our feedback is a valuable resource to B&N and the development team, if they choose to consider it (and I'm sure they do!).

Thank you to the team for all their hard work in getting us this update so quickly!  I'm sure there were some high-stress days and nights when the pressure was on!

The idea behind icons is that once you know what they do you don't "need" to read the caption underneath.  At least they didn't change the order.  Now that would've twisted a few knickers.

EDIT:  I re-read your post and you didn't say anything about the captions.  My bad.  Now, may I say, "Are you serious??!!!  It's hard to read those big ol' icons???!!!"

What industry do you work in?

Its clear you do not work in Software development.  If you did you would know that there are only so many programmers you can throw at a problem before they start getting in each other's way.  You would know you can't even hire a new programmer and get them up to speed in the time the nook has been out.  You would know you can't hire a consulting firm full of programmers and get anything delivered in 2 months.

They could plow all the graphic artist salary (or contract money) as well as the Janitor, the lawn care services, sell the CEO's Limo, take a Mortgage on every B&N store in the country and plow this money into hiring the best minds in the android community, and  you still could not appreciably speed up development.

I positively assure you the icons did not slow down anything.

Re: GO BACK TO THE OLD ICONS! (1.2)

The new UI is so much better looking than it was before, major props to BN for that.  I understand that the upgrades for Nook are going to be iterative, they can't do everything at once but I am extremely disappointed that page turning speech wasn't a priority.  While I LOVE the UI upgrades, I could have waited for that until the next update if I could have had my page turning enhancement.  That is one thing I am jealous of the Kindle for.
