Help Us Help You

I've seen a lot of posts here by people having some sort of nook trouble and they are desperate for help. The problem is, many times they post something so generic that offering help is useless because you don't have enough information to offer any help.

If you would like a response to your plea, it might make sense to do some of the following:

  1. Tell us the type of nook you have - WIFI only or 3G/WIFI
  2. If you can't download a book, let us know how you are doing it if you have both WIFI and 3G
  3. Don't post a 'generic' message like 'I can't download a book!'. That tells us absolutely nothing! Let us know HOW you tried, if you are receiving any error messages, etc. The more you tell us, the easier it will be to offer help!

Before posting, do yourself (and everyone here) a favor and:

  1. RTFM (read the freaking' manual)
  2. Look at the 'stickies' here in the forum
  3. Use the Search function on the forum to see if someone else has experienced the problem you are having - you just might find the answer already there!

Lastly, to the 'hit and runs' - the people who post 1 whiny post about how they hate the nook because it doesn't do blah blah blah so they are returning it to buy a Kindle - you are simply trolls. Save yourself the posting effort and don't bother - we really don't give a rat's a** that you are disappointed because you thought buying a nook would bring world peace, order pizza for you, or whatever stupid nonsense you had in mind that no one with any operational brain cells would even think. Go buy your Kindle and let Jeff Bezos know - he'll care - we don't!!! :smileyhappy:

In all seriousness, there are a lot of people on this forum with a wealth of knowledge concerning the nook that will be glad to help you - make it easier for everyone (and perhaps get a faster answer to your question) by giving us enough information about your issue.

Re: Help Us Help You

I have spent the last 2 days trying to figure out how to download a library book to the Nook..without any luck.  I have the Nook 3g Wi-fi. I tried to download a book from the library site on the nook itself w/o any luck.  We went to the Ohio eProject website to download the free library books.  It mad us install some Adobe Digital software.  After that was installed correctly on my computer, I tried to transfer it to the Nook, without any luck.  I thought the whole idea of having the 3G was that you could load an ebook from your library site to Nook, without having to access your PC?  Otherwise what advantages does it have versus the WI-FI version.  The onlt success I have had was to download a B&N book from their website.

I wish someone could take me step by step of how to download library books.  I am not stupid and neither is my husband...we are pretty computer literate...but have spend 2 days trying to do this.  If I can't get it to work..I'm sure if it is worth keeping.  THANKS

Currently, downloading from BN is the only 3G advantage...  I don't know if this will ever change.

As to using ADE and library books, click on the link in my signature, it will take you through it.

ebook library finder and installing and using Adobe Digital Editions in Frog's signature

I've also got it in my signature - Using library books and ADE - find the post by Michael V.

Did you authorize ADE?  Do you have a valid card for the library.  Once you get it set up, it's very easy - takes about 3 minutes to check out, download, and move the book to your nook via ADE.  You'd need ADE whether you were doing it on the Sony, Kobo, or nook readers.

Well said, Nookguy!  Most of us can be very helpful, but we do need more detail.

Re: Help Us Help You

How to download library ebooks

Necessary software and authorization:

1.  Download the Adobe Digital Editions software from http://www.adobe.com/products/digitaleditions/.

2.  Open Adobe Digital Editions.  It should prompt you to create an Adobe account or to login to your existing account and then to authorize your computer as one of your five devices. Follow the click through path to authorize the device.

3.  Attach your nook to your computer via USB which ADE is open.  ADE will prompt you to authorize your NOOK.  Follow the click through path to authorize the device.

To search for library titles:

1.  Go to your local library’s website or search for a particular library online.  You can search for library websites that contain ebook content from Overdrive’s website at http://search.overdrive.com.  Searching by zip code will give you public libraries that have eBook content within 100 miles of the zipcode.

2.  Once you are the library’s eBook site, you will need a library card/account in order to checkout eBooks.

3.  Once logged in, you can search for titles in the following ways

  • Entering title/keywords in the search bar
  • Browse by format
  • Browse by subject

4.  eBook titles will appear with format specific indicators (i.e. PDF or ePub) and with icons to display what devices it can be downloaded to.  (Note there is not a way to directly put it on your eReader device, which is why you need to use Adobe Digital Editions)

5.  When trying borrow an eBook title from the library, there will be two options.  The option name varies from library to library but they have the same idea.  For this guide, I will use New York Public Library’s terms and format, which is to request the item or add the item to your eList

  • eList is adding the items to your account “queue” in order to “check out” the title.  “Check out” means downloading it to the location on the PC that Adobe Digital Editions is authorized on.
  • Requesting an item – The title that you select might be checked out already by another individual.  You can put a request for the title and the library will email you when the title becomes available to borrow.

What to do with the title:

1.  Once you have checked out a title from your local library, download it to your computer.  Once you hit the download button, the file that you will be prompted to download is a “.acsm” file.

2.  Click open and the file will open up in ADE and refresh your library with new content.  The title will display the amount of days you have left in the loan period.  You can also save the .acsm file to your PC and open the file in ADE.

3.  Go to the library view.  Drag the title to the “NOOK” icon.

4.  Undock the NOOK from your computer.

5.  In the Library, open My Documents.

6.  The title should be available to be read for the period of time specified by the library.

Excellent advice.

I'd add two points:

4) Read Doug's List of Things

5) Watch the Posting Video

6) Refrain from using the phrase "it doesn't work".  Be specific.

Could you post this so it is in a separate Subject and not in "Help Us Help You"? I think it would benefit more people making it easier to find these step by step instructions. Great post. Thank you.

This is the post I am referring to:

Re: Help Us Help You

I am looking to purchasing an ereader and in comparing I was hoping you could answer a simple question for me.  I have also that ebooks can be purchased from any web site for the Nook.  Is that correct, or do you have to just purchase them from B&N website.  If they can be purchased from any website does that also mean another book store's website?

@thirdchild

Welcome!  :smileyhappy:

Books purchased from many websites, including those of other bookstores and many free sites, can be loaded via computer and read on Nook.  The big exception is Amazon:  Amazon uses a proprietary format for its eBooks that non-Amazon eBook readers cannot read.

Re: Help Us Help You

Also, if you have a library card (or can get one) to a library that has e-books, you can check them out for free.  Not all publishers allow this to happen, but some do.  Check the link in my signature (look for a post by Michael V) on how to do this.

Many of us have found that we've been able to get free cards within our own state to libraries that are in cities we don't live in.  search.overdrive.com or check the find a library link in one of FrogAlum's posts (look for one by looking at laurels on the right).

Re: Help Us Help You

First off....Very well put!!

Good Morning!!!  I am in need of your assistance! :smileyhappy:

Day One:

I recently bought a 3G wi fi Nook.  I tried to connect to my wi fi at home and it kept telling me the password was wrong. Which I understand, easy solution...type your passwrd in right, but it was.  It is all numbers so I know the case was not an issue.  After calling tech support they told me it was my router.

Day Two:

So I tried to connect to my wi fi at work and same thing. (Different provider and router brand)  I then went home and spoke with three different tech support people and we down graded to version 1.2 and I was able to connect and get on wi fi.  Once we upgraded back to 1.4 it would not connect again.  So the fifth gentleman I spoke with said it was the nook and I should return it for a new one.

Day Three:

I returned my original nook and received a replacement.  I went home and I am having the same issue at work and at home.  Whcich I am understanding that the finger is being pointed at the user now! : )

These are the steps I am taking...

Tap Wi Fi

Then tap wi fi hotspot Disconnected

Let it scan for my SSID

Tap it and tap connect

Enter in my password

Choose the WEP Password format ( I have tried all three of them with both routers)

It does it's thing for a few minutes and then proceeds to tell me that my password is wrong.

I am able to search with the 3G and read books but I would like my Nook to do everything I paid for it to do.

Any Suggestions?

LittleByLittle03: Is your router using "shared key" WEP? Since 1.3, the NOOK doesn't seem to connect to shared key WEP.

"Open key" WEP is more secure, and the NOOK connects to that just fine. If you're using shared key, I very much recommend changing to open key.

Re: Help Us Help You

This may sound ridiculous but how do I know if it's open or shared?

Thank you for helping me!

Re: Help Us Help You

Ok I downloaded ADE then went to NYPL and checkedout my book It saved to ADE and I dragged it to my nook through ADE.  In my My Comp setting when I see my nook as an extra hard drive I can see the book in there and if I click on it it opens in ADE.  But when I unplug the nook the book is not in it.  I don't see it at all.  I've RTMed and I checked the links that you attached I also watched a video that was like DO THIS MORON... and I was doing the same thing as advised in all.  I really don't' want to lug my lap top with me just to read a book.  I love my new nook I think it's the library.  But again I can open the book in my laptop so... What am I doing wrong??? Thanks for responding.
