Re: Help with library books

I have already have. After I posted, I deicided to try it. Still nothing.

Than you are probably doing something wrong, there is no other explanation.

When you use Windows Explorer to go to your Nook drive, and look into the My Documents folder, do you see the files?

Just to be clear. This is an other My Documents folder than the one in Windows. Your Nook drive will probably have a letter like F: or G:, this not the My Document folder you find on your C: drive.

Make sure your are looking at the My Documens folder on your Nook. If you see "My documents" in the menu, then you are actually looking at your B&N library. If you see "B&N library" in the menu, then you are looking at the My Documents folder.

Also you need to search for new content to update the index of your My Documents folder.

-I can see douments I have sideloaded

-Library books are not in My Documents, they are in the Digital Editions folder

-Yes, I understand.

-Yes, I understand and have done this.

Below is a post I had posted after my initial request for help. It explains in much greater detail what I have done and what I am seeing. The factory reset is not on there, as I did that after the post. I think the problem is that the correct file path is not being specified, based on the manifest file.

NOOK, 1st Edition

Problems:

1)      Digital library books, in pdf and epub formats, are not showing up in NOOK’s My Documents.

2)      Personal pdf documents that I have copied and pasted from my computer’s My Documents to the NOOK’s My Documents (while tethered via USB) are not showing up in NOOK’s My Documents.

This is the current status:

1)      Adobe ID/password that is the same as my B & N ID/password.

2)      Adobe Digital Editions loaded on computer.

3)      Computer authorized to use ADE.

4)      NOOK authorized to ADE.

5)      NOOK software version 1.7.0.

6)      When NOOK is tethered to computer via USB, NOOK is recognized by ADE (NOOK shows up as a shelf).

7)      Library books and free sample books can be opened in ADE.

8)      Library books and free sample books all at least have viewing  permission (as per “Item Info”)

9)      When viewing NOOK files from my computer, the library books sample books are NOT found in My Documents; they are visible in the Digital Editions folder.

10)   When viewing NOOK files from my computer, personal documents show up in My Documents.

11)   When trying to find and open books and documents on NOOK, I tap on the following: Library à My Documents à Check for new content.

This is what I have done to try to fix the problem:

1)      Uninstalled and reinstalled ADE software (total of 6 times, 2 times were at the request of B & N Tech Support).

2)      Deauthorized and reauthorized Nook (in ADE) by deleting the Digital Editions folder and .adobe-digital-editions folder (total of 6 times, 2 times at the request of B & N Tech Support).

3)      Powered down Nook (too many times to count).

4)      Unregistered and reregistered Nook through B & N (twice)

5)      Manually copy and pasted library and sample books from ADE to NOOK’s My Documents folder (found this suggestion on several forums)

6)      Copy and pasted the Digital Editions folder and .adobe-digital-editions folder into NOOK’s My Documents; several forums say that those two folders should be in the My Documents folder (found this suggestion on several forums)

7)      Checked the manifest file found in the .adobe-digital-editions folder. This is a sample of what I have found:

  1. Purchased B & N books have the following path: <de:localPath relative="true">../my B&N downloads/2940000422939.epub</de:localPath> [No trouble finding or opening these but a folder is designated]
  2. Sample ebook: <de:localPath relative="true">Daisy_Miller.pdf</de:localPath> [Note that no folder is designated]
  3. Library book:  <de:localPath relative="true">How_to_Shine_at_Work_0001.pdf</de:localPath> [Note that no folder is designated]
  4. Personal pdf: <de:localPath relative="true">../my documents/CV_11-16-2011_PDF.pdf</de:localPath> [Folder is designated but still does not show up on NOOK]

8)      Tried the above with different library books, sample books, and personal pdf documents.

I’ve had my NOOK for two years, but I have never tried to load documents or library books. For two weeks I have been combing the forums and talking with tech support to no avail. The only thing I have not done is a factory reset, which I am planning on doing next. Does anyone have any other suggestions?

Re: Help with library books

Library book:  <de:localPath relative="true">How_to_Shine_at_Work_0001.pdf</de:localPath> [Note that no folder is designated]

I checked my manifest, it does not show a folder for the library book, but I would assume that is because it is in the same folder as the manifest.  I also saw that anything that I book I purchased and is in the digital editions folder does not have a path.   Note that I found the manifest folder in the Digital Editions Folder, not in the .adobe-digital-editions folder.  The only thing in the .adobe folder on my Nook are the device.xml and authorization.xml files.

11)   When trying to find and open books and documents on NOOK, I tap on the following: Library à My Documents à Check for new content.

Just to be sure, you are tapping on the My Library Icon, then tapping on Go to My Documents, then Check for New Content?  When you toggle back and forth between the two libraries, the B&N Library has books in it, the My documents library is completely empty.

6)      Copy and pasted the Digital Editions folder and .adobe-digital-editions folder into NOOK’s My Documents; several forums say that those two folders should be in the My Documents folder (found this suggestion on several forums)

This is not true, Adobe automatically adds them to the Nook when it is authorized and they are added in the correct place.  You should delete them from My Documents.

The folder structure should like this:

.adobe-digital-editions

Digital Editions

my audiobooks

my B&N downloads

my documents

my music

my screensavers

my wallpapers

5)      Manually copy and pasted library and sample books from ADE to NOOK’s My Documents folder (found this suggestion on several forums)

Library books have to be transferred from the computer to the Nook within ADE.  They won't work otherwise because they won't have the authorization date and expiration date.  From your computer, you click and hold on the library book and drag it to the Nook shelf in ADE.  I assume this is what you've been doing.

I have to run off to an appointment, but I'm not sure I have any more suggestions except take it into a store and see if the Nook expert can help.  I'll see if I can come up with any other suggestions in the meantime.

I tried this, as I am trying anything and everything, and it did not help. I moved the folders back as I found them, which is exactly as you have listed below.)

The folder structure should like this:

.adobe-digital-editions

I've pretty much come to terms with the fact that I won't be able to borrow library books. Such a bummer!)

It works for everyone else, so it should work for you:smileyhappy:

If the store succeeds in solving the problem, please let us know (I admit I am curious what the cause of the problem turns out to be).

What is the version number of ADE that you have installed?

Re: Help with library books

I had one other idea.  When your Nook is connected to the computer if you click on the Nook shelf in ADE do you see the books?

Based on what I've read, I think the problem may be that the manifest file is not in the digital editions folder but in the hidden folder.  Everything indicates it is supposed to be in the digital editions folder and the only the in the .adobe folder are the device and authorization xml files.  You can try a couple of things.  Move the manifest folder to the digital editions folder, or delete the .adobe-digital-editions folder and the digital editions folder from the Nook and try reauthorizing it.  Hopefully, Adobe will create the manifest in the correct location if you do this, but I'd try simply moving it first.  Given the fact that the manifest has relative paths, not absolute paths, if it is in the .adobe folder, the path would be incorrect.

(Acocrding to the ADE forum, a file path should be seen for all items, otherwise there are no instructions on where to place the file.)

Ok, well there is no path in mine and it shows everything in my documents without a problem.  If the manifest.xml file is in the same folder as the books, then there is no need for a path, very similar to Windows not needing a path if you're linking to something in the same folder.

My purchased books have a file path of "My B & N Download"

I was referring to books I purchased elsewhere, such as Kobo.  Kobo uses the same system as the library do it downloads a .acsm file which has to be opened by ADE.

I have deauthorized/reauthorized 3 or 4 times already.

That is the authorization file.
