To be honest, I rarely use this feature. However, I think it's great to have because I sometimes can remember what the cover of a book looks like but can't remember the title or the author. I've had a few opportunities over the past few months to use this feature, and have mixed feelings about it.
When I first downloaded books, only about half of them had covers that would show on the nook. And the six "free" books that I got with the initial download of the B&N ereader for my PC (this was a year before the nook came out) had covers that were "not available" once the nook was released. That was annoying enough, but with the latest version of the software, I noticed that all of my books (well, all but those six just mentioned and a few others - especially those downloaded from Google Books) had covers that would appear on my nook.
Having said that, I just browsed through my covers looking for a book and more than 2/3 of my covers aren't available - they only show up as gray blocks. Does anyone else have this problem? Is this something that happens sporadically? Does B&N have a fix for this problem?
I'd like for my covers to appear on my nook, because it is a nice feature. It's very annoying when you need to use the feature and can't and then have to log on to your PC and go to "My B&N Library" to view the covers (and there are a whole host of problems with the way the B&N site works -- surprisingly, nothing on the B&N site is very user friendly, except the one-touch purchase of ebooks).
I can understand not having covers available for sideloaded content (but not really, given that there's probably code written into the document - especially if it's an epub - for the cover to show on your device), but not on books downloaded directly from B&N? Seems weird to me.
Any assistance with this problem would be greatly appreciated.

The Nook needs a few seconds to download all the covers to the display. If you wait a few seconds before using the display perhaps more covers will appear.
Furthermore not every book has the original cover. Cover rights are seperate from book rights. Publishers do not always include the cover with a book.
There are less features for sideloaded books because B&N would like you to buy their books, not those from other bookstores. That is why you get extra features if you buy the books from B&N.

Thanks for the info, but almost all of my books are from B&N. As I mentioned, nearly all the covers were available in the "Show Covers" feature a few weeks ago and all of a sudden more than 2/3 disappeared. This problem occurred when I updated my "B&N content".

Can you give me the title of one of your ebooks that is not showing the cover?
Not all eBooks contain covers being that publishers do not have the rights for the cover in eBook format.

Mine is doing the same thing! I don't have many books yet, I have purchased 4 now. I could see the first 3 I bought. Then, I got another one this morning. I have a gray block for that book and the one I purchased right before it! I only have WiFi, so I thought I would wait until I was connected again to see if they show up.

The 2 that won't show anything but a gray rectangle on my Nook are "The Girl Who Played With the Hornet's Nest" and "Water for Elephants."
